THE UNEXPECTED

Emma POV I don’t know what is worse, the fact that Jay left me alone to unpack everything by myself or the fact that Mason had to see me in that condition. I’ve never heard him talk bad about anyone and I’ve never seen him angry, nor has he ever been rude to anyone… well, not in front of us. We met Mason purely by accident and I’m glad we did because who he was a year ago and who he is now are two completely different people. He used to be quiet and withdrawn. He never really spoke and I just knew he could use a friend, and to be honest, I could too. I had the worst high school life and life at home wasn’t any better. My father is an alcoholic and my mother just never cared. If my father started drinking, she would pack her things and leave for days, sometimes weeks, until it became months and then one day she just never came back. Jay and I were left with our father, and we couldn’t do anything about it because I was still under aged, and Jay refused to leave me alone. Before our father became a full-time alcoholic, he owned many businesses. He was known to be one of the most respected businessmen in America until he wasn’t anymore. He became the topic everyone joked about and made fun of and, for us being his children, it was worse. We were always the ones being questioned and judged until it became unbearable, and I left school. Jay had finished school and already started university when he decided that he would try and save our family name. Not for my mother nor my father, but for us. While he studied, he took over my father’s businesses and, one by one, he rebuilt and restored them. Those he couldn’t save he sold and those he saved belong to him. He is the sole CEO of Abner industries. Jay and I moved away, leaving my father behind in the mess he created, and started our own lives. I finished school online and I’ll be going to university this year. Unlike Jay who studies business, I’ll study to become a doctor. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, and now Jay has given me the opportunity to do what I want, and I’ll have his full support. The only thing he asked of me was that I do great in my studies and not waste my time and his money, which is fair. There are a few things about me that make me different, and I think the biggest one is being able to feel what someone around me feels. If I look at someone, I can tell you exactly what they are feeling and that is what happened when I met Mason. I could feel his sadness, his anger, his pain, his loneliness. I could feel everything he felt, and I wondered what had happened to him, but I never asked, knowing it’s not my place and he will talk when he’s ready and if he doesn’t, I’ll still be there. After Mason and I left my apartment, we went pizza hunting. I’m not a fussy eater and I eat anything, but when it comes to eating out, I’m very picky. I don’t like certain foods because too many people touch them. I don’t like small restaurants because their food is more than two days old, so I will always choose something like pizza or burgers, but I only order from two places. The reason being is, they do everything in front of you and their hygiene is five stars plus, but since we’ve met Mayson and he introduced us to his cooking, eating out has become torture. Jay can cook, but I’ve never in my life tasted better cooking than Mayson’s. everything he makes is perfect. I on the other hand, I don’t like cooking, not because I can’t, but because cooking involves dirtying dishes and I hate… I HATE cleaning dishes. “You do know that at this rate we’ll never get to eat before midnight, right,” Mayson said, walking beside me while looking around like he'd never seen this part of town before. “I don’t know where to go. The place we always go to is closed,” I said with a pout while looking up at him. I don’t feel much of the height difference between me and Mayson as I do when I stand next to Jay. Mayson is only a head taller than me, but he gets buffier and buffier every day, I swear. He always goes to the gym at night and in the mornings and some weekends he just disappears to come back on a Monday looking refreshed and fully energized. “How about we just go to a stall?” Mayson asked, and I looked at him with a horrified expression. “Do you know how dirty it is?” I asked in a whisper, making sure no one around us could hear me. “ It’s food.” He said, shrugging his shoulders like it’s nothing. I looked at him horrified that he would even consider going to a stall. “ Let’s just go to the beach and eat sand.” I said with so much sarcasm. I heard Mayson chuckle and stepped in front of him. He stopped walking and I looked at him with my arms crossed over my chest. “If we can’t go to Mia’s, then let’s go to Angel’s.” I said, batting my eyes, trying to be cute. Angel’s is a bit far from here, but as I said, there are only two places I will order from. Mayson looked at me with a blank expression and I didn’t know if I should just retreat or keep pushing because his expression was giving nothing away. He looked at me and let out a long sigh and wiped his hands over his face. When he looked at me, I could see a smile forming in the corners of his mouth and I knew I had him. “Pleassseeee.” I said, stretching the word, knowing he'd give up any second now. “Okay, okay let’s go.” Mayson said and I did a little happy jump while he just laughed at me. For anyone who doesn’t know us, we look like the perfect couple, but I know that’ll never happen because Mayson is gay. When he told me this, I was sad to be honest because he’s perfect boyfriend material, but on the other hand, I was excited because now I have a best friend that doesn’t want anything from me, and I know our friendship will never be ruined because of feelings. “ Let’s go.” Mason said and put his arm around my shoulder, guiding me towards the cab stop. When Mayson and I got to Angel’s, we were both standing outside looking through the window speechless. We stared at the person on the other side of the window and then looked at each other with open mouths due to shock. “What?” Mayson and I said simultaneously and looked back to see if we saw correctly. Jay was sitting at a table close to the window with a blond woman and whatever they were talking about seemed interesting because his facial expression was that of a man in love. I looked at Mayson, “should we go in?” I asked and he looked at me, “I don’t know.” Mayson said and looked again. “Why would he come here? I mean he doesn’t even like this place.” I said and crossed my arms while staring at Jay through the window. “Well, there is only one way we’ll find out.” Mayson said, taking my hand and pulling me towards the entrance. “What are you doing?” I asked in a panicked whisper. Mayson didn’t answer me. Instead, he pulled the door open and pushed me inside and walked behind me with his hands on my shoulders, pushing me towards the counter. “Mayson.” I said, but he shushed me and walked up to the counter where he ordered two Pizza’s and two double cheeseburgers. He took our order number and looked around for an empty table. I followed his gaze and the only empty table there was right next to Jay’s table. I looked at Mayson silently praying that we could just take the food and go home, but before I could move, Jay’s eyes found us and I wish I could put his expression into words, but I couldn’t. The best I can is he looked like a dear caught in headlights. I couldn’t move or look away from Jay’s stare. The look in his eyes was enough to make me run and hide, but Mayson refused to let go of my hand.
