Mayson POV
I woke up screaming… again. I looked around frantically before I realized it was just a dream, the same dream I have been having ever since that day a year ago. I kicked the covers off me as I stood up and walked towards the window. As I stood there staring out, my mind drifted back to that day. That was the worst thing they have ever done to me, and it was also the last time they saw me. After I stood up, I left, and it’s been a year since then. I know I must go back because my father left something for me, and I won’t allow any of them to keep me from getting it. I turned 18 a week ago and, like every other time, I was alone.
The scars have healed physically, but mentally I can still feel the pain like it happened yesterday. I didn’t sever my bond with the pack, which means I’m not a rogue… yet. After I get what I want from my mother, I have no reason to stay in that pack anymore.
Since I left, I have found out a lot of things about myself and one of them is that I can hide my scent. It’s not unheard of, but it’s very uncommon for a wolf to have that ability and those that have it never talk about it. Many legends say that only the chosen ones can hide their scents and most of them were killed, either by the pack or they were sold to hunters.
Since I left, I started heavy training and gyming to try and reverse the damage that was done to me, but it’s a slow progress. I’ve gained back some muscles and strength that I have lost, but I still have a long way to go. I don’t regret running away, even if some will say that it was cowardly of me to do so, but I chose my life over death because that is what would’ve happened eventually. Either they would’ve killed me, or I would’ve committed suicide. Talking about abuse and being the one going through abuse are two completely different things and not only does it hurt physically, but it scares you mentally. Physical scars heal and they go away, but mentally you can never heal completely. The reason I ran is because I still have plans for my life. I still have things I want to do and I want to live… my father gave his life so I could live and I will honor him by living, but I refuse to live as a slave any longer. I might be an Omega by force, but I’m a Beta by blood.
I stood staring out the window until the sun started peeking over the horizon, greeting the world with its soft yellow glow. I didn’t go far and if anyone were really looking for me, they would’ve found me by now, but no one came looking. I ended up in a small broken-down wooden cabin on the other side of the forest. It’s closer to town and a lot more dangerous, but I’d rather take my chances with hunters than with my pack. I’ve been hunting for a year, too afraid to cook food because of how close I am to the city. I’ve run into a few rogues, but I’ve never fought them. It was like they knew we'd all die if we started a fight, because hunters are highly trained and very clever. Sometimes, I swear they have better hearing than most wolves.
I don’t know what I’m going to do with my life yet, but I do know that I want to get out of here and away from everyone that knows my pack. I was thinking about going to America. From what I’ve heard, the packs there are more accepting and I’ve never heard about anyone being abused. After today I will be a rogue, but not even that will stop me from finding my place in this world.
As the sun reached the top of the trees, I walked away from the window and took a shower. Thanks to our body temperature, cold water doesn’t bother me.
I took a shower and got dressed in simple black jeans and a white T-shirt with black boots. I’m not planning to shift since I’m not that far from the pack. ‘Like I said, if they came looking, they would’ve found me.’
As I walked through the snow, it crunched beneath my boots and I smiled with every step I took, knowing that from today on I would be free. No more abuse, no more shame and no one to control me. I will be my own person and find out who I am without any of them.
As I got closer to the border, I could smell many different wolves and I could smell food being cooked and I knew if I was still there, I would’ve probably been the one cooking. I stopped outside the border and took a deep breath before I continued walking. As I came out of the trees, I saw many pups running around playing in the snow. I smiled at them as I walked past towards my mother’s house. I haven’t thought about what I’m going to say… will I be rude? Will my voice be indifferent? What will her expression be like? Would she be shocked, angry, or happy?
My thoughts were interrupted as I stopped in front of the house. Looking at it through a new pair of eyes really makes me glad that I don’t live here anymore. The house looks rundown almost like no one has lived here for years. The grass is overgrown and the garden my mother once took pride in… well, it doesn’t even exist anymore. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath as I walked up the porch steps trying to avoid the broken ones.
I knocked and waited and then knocked again.
“I’m coming.” I heard a woman say from inside the house and I stepped back and waited.
I looked up at the porch roof and, like everything else, it had fallen apart. Not only was it skew, but there were holes everywhere.
The door opened and I looked at the woman standing in front of me. If it wasn’t for her smell, I would never have guessed that this woman was indeed my mother. She looked withered and frail, almost like she was human. Wolves age, but ten years for a human is one year for us… we age very slowly.
She looked me up and down before her eyes settled on my face.
“Can I help you?” she asked, looking at me with a blank expression, and I looked at her disbelieving. ‘She doesn’t even recognize me.’ I thought to myself as I looked at her returning the blank expression.
“I came to get what my father left for me.” I said, looking at her as her eyes widened and shock replaced her blank expression.
“Mayson?” she asked, taking a step closer, reaching up to touch my face. Before her hand could make contact, I pulled away and saw the pain in her eyes.
“I just came to pick up what’s mine.” I said, just looking at her as her eyes filled with tears. I looked at her confused for a second, because why would she cry? Isn’t she the one that chased me away first? Isn’t she the one that turned her back on me when I needed her the most? She is the one that left me and acted like I never existed and now she is the one standing before me with tears in her eyes. How dare she?
“Where have you been? I thought something happened to you.” My mother said, and I couldn’t figure out if she was truly concerned or if this was just an act to find out where I'd been.
“ You’ve changed.” She said and I let out a humorless chuckle. I looked at her and just held out my hand, “I just went to pick up what my father left for me.” I said and she looked at me in disbelief.
“Why are you being like this?” she asked and now I’m the one standing staring at her in disbelief.
“Just give it to me so we can both get back to our lives.” I said a bit rudely, but my patience was running low. My mother looked at me and pressed her lips together. She turned around and walked into the house and I stood outside waiting.
A few minutes later, she came back holding a small silver box with a folded-up letter. She handed it to me, and I looked at her one last time before I turned and walked away.
“ You’re leaving again?” she asked, and I stopped and looked at her over my shoulder.
“I’m going to a place I belong, and that place isn’t here.” I said and didn’t wait for a reply.
As I walked, I looked at the small silver box in my hand and the folded-up letter. From the looks of the paper, it has been opened and closed many times before and not by me. I stopped walking and opened the letter,
‘If something were to ever happen to me before my time, I trust you to look after yourself first. There are some things you don’t know and if you want to know more, ask your mother. The reason you and your mother have never really been close is because you are not her biological son, you are mine. I had a mate before I met Emilie, but she was killed by a hunter when you were just a few days old. I didn’t know how to raise a baby alone, so I went to every pack hoping to find a second mate, but I never did so. Instead, I chose a mate, and I chose Emily. She already had children. Like your mother, her mate was killed in a fight against hunters while protecting his pack.
I want to tell you all this in person, but if I don’t get the chance to, at least I can tell you like this.
Don’t hate Emily, she only did what I asked her to and that was to take care of you. You are the only one who has the key to the silver box and in that box, you will find everything you need to have a future without worry.
I will always love you, even if I’m not there.’
I stood in the middle of the field with tears in my eyes as everything started making sense. The reason she was willing to kick me out so fast, the fact that she turned a blind eye knowing how much I'd suffered, for not coming to look for me, for allowing abuse upon a 10-year-old boy. ‘I’m not her child.’ I thought to myself as I tried to silence the war inside my head and hart. Everything in me is screaming to confront her, yet a small rational part of me keeps me from doing it because what will I get from it? I can’t get back the years I’ve lost. It won’t take away the memories, nor will it take away the mental scars. As I stood there staring down at the letter in my hand, I felt angry and betrayed, but most of all, I felt empty. I crumbled the paper and threw it on the ground as I turned around just to see if she was still there. As I turned, I looked into her tear-stained face, and she stared into my teary eyes. every part of me that hated her got replaced by indifference. I don’t hate her, I don’t love her, I don’t blame her, I… I… I feel nothing.
