RESPONSIBILITY

Josh POV “Tylor!” I yelled as I took in the fight happening before me. I was in my room when I heard screaming and howling. I’ve been trying to find Mayson since he left, but when I saw him come back I knew he wouldn’t want to see me, so I just watched him from a distance hoping that he would stay, but I was wrong… Everyone knows what happened between Mayson and Tylor because Mayson didn’t make it a secret when he rejected Tylor and then the pack. I left the house when I saw Mayson disappear into the woods, but the only one I found there was Tylor. It was like Mayson just disappeared leaving no scent and no trace that he was ever there. When I came out of the woods, I left and went to my room, walking past everyone, ignoring all the stares and hurt expressions. I have never been close to Mayson because Karlie and I knew the truth about who he really is, but when he needed us, we all betrayed him. I don’t blame him for leaving, but I do blame him for rejecting his mate. He knows how rare it is for a wolf to find a mate in the times we’re in, and yet he didn’t care. The last memory I have of Mayson is how he looked at me right before he ran away. I could see the hurt, the pain, and the feeling of betrayal in his eyes, and I wanted to reach out to him and tell him how sorry I was, but I never could. I could never bring myself to stand up against Tylor nor could I ever stand up for Mayson. The amount of suffering he went through because of us… he rejected Tylor because of us… all of us. Night after night I lay awake thinking about how it could’ve been if things were different. Would all of us still be friends? Would Mayson have taken the place of Beta instead of me? Would he still have been here or would something else have caused him to leave? I was on my way out when I heard someone scream and ran out. I ran out of the house not passing a single wolf and that caught my attention because the house is usually filled with busy wolves. I ran out of the house and saw everyone standing near the woods looking at something intensely and that is when I heard it. ‘Wolves fighting.’ I ran towards the crowd and pushed through until I stood in front staring at one bleeding wolf and one lifeless body with wide eyes. my blood ran cold and everything around me faded as I looked at the scene in front of me. I had barely recovered from my shock when the wolf got attacked by another wolf from behind. “Tylor!” I yelled, looking at the two wolves fighting with the intent of killing each other. I didn’t know what was going on and no matter how many people I asked, no one was talking. “Tylor!” I yelled again, but it was useless. They are so busy fighting that no one is hearing me, and no one is trying to stop what is happening either. I felt someone take hold of my arm and looked at the person. When I saw Luna Astra’s face, I immediately lowered my head and greeted her respectfully and allowed her to pull me away from the crowed. “There is no use screaming, he made the rules clear.” Alpha Tyrone said, walking on the other side of me. “What rules?” I asked, confused. Luna Astra let go of my arm and I turned to look at them. “Tylor announced an official challenge for Alpha. It’s a fight to the death, and no one is allowed to interfere or call off the fight… Not even me.” Alpha Tyrone said, and I stared at him with a horrified expression, not believing what I was hearing. “Why?” I asked in a whisper, keeping my head low. “ He’s taking responsibility for his actions and the choices he made and the regret of losing his mate drove him to call a challenge knowing he may not survive.” Luna Astra said. I lifted my head and looked at her with teary eyes. “He wasn’t the only one who made those choices. Why is he the only one paying?” I asked. “Because he is the leader, he was raised to be kind, to be fair, and to never be unreasonable. That is what we taught him, but because of his own actions, he lost a mate and a pack member.” Alpha Tyrone said, and I couldn’t take it. We are all as guilty as he is. “This is all our fault,” I said, looking at the Luna and Alpha, and turned around running back to the fight. I’m not nearly strong enough to take on Tylor, but I will die trying to stop him before anyone else dies. “Tylor, that is enough.” I said and held my hands up in surrender, making it clear that I would not fight him. “What are you doing Josh?” Tylor asked through mind link, and I took a step closer, kneeling down, exposing my most vulnerable parts. “Stopping you.” I said and kept my head tilted so my neck was exposed. “Either fight or get out!” Tylor yelled through my mind, making me flinch. “This isn’t all on you, Tylor. We all had a hand in what happened, everyone in this pack is as responsible as you are.” I said. “You have no idea what I did! What I allowed to be done!” Tylor yelled through mind link, and I could hear the pain and regret in his voice. “I do know because we were all in it together. We all stood by and watched and participated in what happened. We are as guilty as you are, so why are you taking responsibility alone? We are a pack, Tylor, and as a pack we stood together then, why should you stand alone now?” I asked, hoping to get through to him, but to be honest I’m losing hope. The one thing everyone admires about Tylor is, once he sets his mind on something, he will stop at nothing until he achieves his goal, no matter how insane or dangerous it might be. “You don’t know, do you?” Tylor asked, stepping forward. All I could see was the angry yellow eyes of his black wolf looking at me. “Know what?” I asked, looking at him. “I was there the day Beta Kyle died. I saw everything yet I chose to never tell the truth, I chose to become the monster I am today because that gave me power. I had the power to be anything I wanted and do anything I wanted because I’m the Alpha, but now I don’t want it anymore.” Tylor said, and I felt the blood drain from my face as my body became cold. I couldn’t move, couldn’t think. It was like the world around me had gone dark and all I could see was red. I stood up and looked at Tylor with shock. “Shift and tell everyone the truth!” I yelled and watched as he took a step back, lowering his head. “You knew all this time.” I said, my voice starting to break as I struggled to hold the emotions in. “Shift back Tylor!” I yelled and he looked up at me. “I don’t have to because I opened the mind link. Everyone who is old enough heard what I said.” Tylor said and, before I could think clearly, I shifted and attacked, knowing he was vulnerable. Tylor fought against me as best as he could, but for a wolf, adrenaline can be a dangerous thing, it can make even a lower wolf stronger than an Alpha. The fight was over quickly and before I knew it, I held the lifeless body of Tylor’s wolf between my teeth as warm blood flowed into my mouth. I let go of the body and watched as it shifted back to human form. Whenever a wolf dies in wolf form, they will shift back to their human form. I stared at Tylor’s lifeless body and saw the life drain from his eyes before I lifted my head and looked around. Everyone was staring at me with shock and disbelief and slowly, one by one, they started kneeling. For an ordinary wolf like me to beat an Alpha is a one in a million chance, yet I did it. I watched as everyone knelt and looked into the faces of Alpha Tyrone and Luna Astra before they too knelt and lowered their heads. They will no longer be recognized as Alpha and Luna because someone of a different bloodline became Alpha. As I looked around the world, it started spinning, everything becoming just too much and I fainted. ‘What have I done?’ I thought to myself before all I could see was darkness.
