PRIVATE CHECK RIDE

1389 Words
*CHAPTER 14: Private Checkride - She Becomes A Real Pilot* Day 29 of suspension. One day left. Mia had 39.8 hours total. She needed 40 hours minimum for Private Pilot checkride. Tomorrow, Day 30, suspension ends, and her checkride was scheduled for 8 AM with FAA examiner Mr. Henderson - famous strict examiner, failed 50% of students on first try. Lisa did final mock checkride yesterday. "Mia, you are ready. Better than ready. You fly better than some commercial pilots I know. Alex trained you like airline captain, not private pilot. Henderson will love you, or he will be scared because you are too good. Either way, you pass." Mia was not scared of checkride. She was scared Alex wouldn't be there. No-contact rule until Day 30 midnight. Checkride at 8 AM Day 30 - technically suspension still active until midnight Day 30. Would he be allowed? Would he break rule? Midnight call Day 29, last midnight call of suspension. "Mia, you sleeping?" Alex voice tired but excited. "No, too nervous for checkride. What if I fail? Henderson fails everyone!" "You won't fail. You know why?" "Why?" "Because you are Mia Carter who soloed in 14 hours, cross-country in 25 hours, who does short approach perfect when tower asks, who breathes when scared, who pushes when she wants to pull. Henderson will ask you weight and balance, you will recite from memory. He will give you engine failure, you will handle like Captain. And because..." He paused. "Because I will be there." Mia sat up in dorm bed. "Alex! You can't! Suspension ends midnight tomorrow, checkride is 8 AM tomorrow, you will still be suspended at 8 AM!" "Technically, yes. But Director called me today. He said 'Hayes, i***t, your girlfriend has checkride tomorrow, if you are not there when she lands as private pilot, she will cry and I will have to deal with crying female pilot, so suspension ends 7 AM tomorrow, one day early, don't tell HR, and bring flowers, not your stupid flight jacket.'" Mia screamed, then covered mouth, crying laughing. "He said that?" "Word for word. He also said if I kiss you before checkride and make you fail, he will make suspension 90 days for real. So no kiss before checkride. After checkride, I will kiss you so hard Henderson will have to fail me for being unprofessional." Mia laughed, tears falling. 29 days of midnight calls, secret fence hugs, missing him, and tomorrow it ends and she becomes private pilot with him watching. "Alex?" "Yes, Future Private Pilot?" "Thank you for not letting me quit when I wanted to quit after scandal. Thank you for resigning for me, even though Director didn't accept." "Mia, I would resign 100 times for you. I would give up wings for you, because you gave me reason to fly again. Before you, I flew because I had to. Now I fly because I want to fly home to you." Both cried on phone, last midnight call, 1 hour 47 minutes. --- *Day 30, 6 AM, Checkride Day.* Mia woke up, put on uniform - white shirt, black pants, one stripe still, but today she would earn two stripes (private pilot). She pinned first solo wings Alex gave her over heart, like always. She braided hair tight, no makeup, headset. She walked to academy, every student cheering: "Go Mia! Pass! Make us proud!" Lisa hugged her: "You got this. Remember, Henderson is strict but fair. If you don't know answer, say 'I don't know but I know where to find it.' Don't guess." 7:55 AM, FAA examiner Mr. Henderson arrived, 60 years old, 20,000 hours, stone face, no smile. Students feared him. "Miss Carter? I am Henderson. I have your paperwork. 39.8 hours, impressive, most students need 60. Instructor Lisa says you are ready, and note here from previous instructor Hayes says you are best student he ever had, and he would stake his license on you passing. That's big claim. We will see if true. Oral exam first, 2 hours, then flight." Mia nodded, hands shaking, but breathed: in 4, hold 4, out 4. Oral exam in briefing room. Henderson grilled her: weight and balance, airspace, weather, regulations, aerodynamics, emergency procedures. Mia answered every question, some word perfect from studying 6 hours night for 29 days during suspension. Henderson raised eyebrow, impressed but didn't show. "Good. Now flight. You will plan cross-country to Hartford, but we will divert. We will do short-field takeoff, short-field landing, soft-field, stalls, steep turns, emergency engine failure, and... we will see." They walked to N-207, same airplane first solo, cross-country. Mia pre-flighted perfect, checklist from memory. She taxied, took off. Oral passed. In air, Henderson tested everything. Steep turns - perfect 45 degrees, altitude +/- 50 feet. Power-on stall - recovery perfect, push nose down like Alex taught. Engine failure simulation - Mia handled calm, picked field, checklist, breathe. "Not bad," Henderson muttered, first compliment. Then short-field landing at small airport - hardest maneuver. Mia remembered Alex yelling 15 times, remembered fence sign, remembered tower saying beautiful flying. She did perfect short-field, stopped within 100 feet of mark. Henderson actually smiled slightly. Back to Farmingdale, final landing. Tower: "Cessna 207, cleared to land, winds 190 at 10, and we have audience for you on ramp." Audience? Mia looked down - ramp full of students, instructors, Lisa, Director Thompson, Ms. Patel, and... at edge, outside fence line but now allowed inside because 7:05 AM suspension over... Alex. Alex in full Captain uniform, four stripes, clean shaven, holding huge bouquet of red roses and small box, sunglasses off, eyes red, watching her final approach. Mia cried on final, but pushed, landed perfect, centerline, soft, best landing of life. She taxied, shut down, hands shaking. Henderson looked at her, then at ramp, then said formal words every pilot waits for: "Miss Mia Carter, I have good news. You have passed Private Pilot checkride. You are now Private Pilot, airplane single engine land. Congratulations. You are excellent pilot. That previous instructor Hayes was right to stake his license. Welcome to the sky, Pilot Carter." Mia screamed, hugged Henderson (he awkwardly patted back), then jumped out of airplane, ripped headset off, and ran. Not to Director. Not to Lisa. To Alex, who was already running to her, roses dropping, breaking no-kiss rule because checkride was over, she was no longer student, she was private pilot. He lifted her off ground, spun her, roses falling, students cheering, Lisa filming, Director pretending to be angry but smiling. "I DID IT! I PASSED! I'M PRIVATE PILOT!" Mia screamed, crying, laughing, hugging him. Alex kissed her, hard, in front of everyone, FAA examiner, Director, HR, all students, no more hiding, no more policy violation because she was not his student anymore, she was his equal, pilot. "I knew you would," Alex whispered, forehead to hers, tears on both. "You own this sky, Private Pilot Carter. I told you." He set her down, handed her roses, then opened small box - inside, new wings, private pilot wings, two stripes, gold, engraved: _M.C. - PRIVATE PILOT - 11-04-2026 - YOU PUSHED - I LOVE YOU - A.H._ "Can I pin new wings on you? Replace student wings?" Mia nodded, crying too much to speak. He pinned new wings over her heart, over first solo wings, hands lingering, and whispered so only she heard over cheering: "Next wings will be commercial, then airline, then captain, four stripes like me. And I will pin every pair, for rest of our lives, if you let me, Future Captain, future Mrs. Hayes, if you want." Mia gasped, "Mrs. Hayes? Are you proposing?" Alex laughed, eyes wet: "Not yet, Pilot Carter, that's after you get commercial license, I have plan, at 35,000 feet again, but this time with ring, not just kiss. Today, just wings. And roses. And promise I will fly every mile with you." Mia hugged roses, wings shining, private pilot certificate in hand, boyfriend Captain holding her, whole academy clapping. She was 19, private pilot at 40.2 hours, fastest in academy history, $80,000 scholarship saved, scandal survived, and loved by man who waited seven years in other story but in this story waited 29 days of midnight calls. She owned this sky. And she would own every sky after. please leave a comment 🥺
