THE SCANDAL -HE RISKS EVERYTHING

1496 Words
*CHAPTER 12: The Scandal - He Risks Everything* Monday morning, 7 AM, Skyline Flight Academy. Mia walked in wearing new confidence - 22 hours, first solo done, first jet time, and girlfriend of Captain Alex Hayes. She had his flight jacket over her uniform because it was cold, and because it smelled like him. She didn't know everyone was staring. Whispers in hallway. Students stopped talking when she passed. Instructor Lisa, usually friendly, looked away. "What's happening?" Mia asked Chloe-like friend Sarah, another female student. Sarah pulled her to bathroom, locked door. "Mia, you didn't see? Someone posted on academy i********: and pilot forum. Photo of you and Alex in jet cockpit kissing. At 35,000 feet. And photo of him pinning wings on you, hand on your... you know. And ice cream shop holding hands." Mia's blood froze. "What? Who?" "Anonymous. Caption: 'Instructor Hayes trading wings for kisses? How to get first solo in 14 hours - date your instructor. Is this Skyline's standard? What about safety?' It's viral in aviation community. Comments are nasty. People saying you slept with him for hours, for jet time." Mia hands shook, phone showing post - 2,000 likes, 400 comments, most cruel: _Another pretty girl buying license with body. Male instructors should be banned. She should be kicked out._ Tears filled eyes. "It's not true! I earned my solo! He pushed me harder than anyone!" "I know, but... management called emergency meeting. They called Alex at 6 AM. He's in Director's office now with HR. Mia, FAA rule - no romantic relationship instructor-student during training because power imbalance. He could lose instructor license. You could lose all hours with him - FAA might say invalid training, you have to redo 22 hours." Mia ran to Director's office, not caring she wasn't called. She burst in. Inside: Director Mr. Thompson, HR woman Ms. Patel, Chief Pilot, and Alex standing, still in Captain uniform, hands behind back, face stone cold, but eyes red like he didn't sleep. "Mia, you should not be here," Mr. Thompson said sternly. "She's my student, she has right," Alex said, voice hard. Ms. Patel held up tablet with photos. "Miss Carter, is it true you are in romantic relationship with Instructor Hayes, your assigned instructor, while under his instruction?" Mia looked at Alex. He gave tiny shake of head - meaning _say no, protect yourself, let me take fall._ But Mia was done letting him protect her alone. "Yes," Mia said loudly, voice shaking but clear. "I love him. He loves me. We fell in love during training. But my training is real! My landings are perfect! My written test 98%! Check my stage check with Chief Pilot - he passed me, not Alex! I soloed because I studied 6 hours a night, not because I kissed him!" Chief Pilot nodded slightly - he did stage check, he knew she was good. "Miss Carter, policy is clear," Ms. Patel said, not unkind. "No fraternization. Instructor Hayes knew policy. He signed it. He continued relationship, even requested you as SIC on charter jet, which is a***e of authority. We have to suspend him pending FAA investigation. And your 22 hours with him are under review - may be invalidated." "NO!" Mia screamed. "You can't! He is best instructor! He taught me to push when I pull! He stayed 3 hours after shift to teach me radio calls! He didn't trade wings, he made me earn wings! If you punish anyone, punish me! Kick me out, not him!" Alex finally spoke, voice low, calm, but deadly serious. "Don't punish her. Punish me. She is 19, student, I am 27, instructor, I should have stopped. I didn't. I couldn't. I fell in love with my student and I violated policy knowingly. I accept full responsibility. Suspend me, fire me, report me to FAA. But her hours are valid. Every hour I signed, she performed to standard, Chief Pilot can verify. Check GoPro footage - every flight recorded. She never once used relationship for favor - in fact I was harder on her. Review tapes. You will see I yelled 'Do it again!' 10 times when other students I let go after 3. She earned everything." Director Thompson sighed, removed glasses. "Alex, you are our best instructor. 6000 hours, zero incidents, students love you. But you know rule exists for reason. Power imbalance. Even if consensual, looks bad. Board is pressuring. What do you want us to do?" Alex looked at Mia, then back, and said words that made Mia cry instantly. "I resign." Silence. "What?" Director stood. "I resign effective immediately as Flight Instructor and Charter Captain at Skyline. I will surrender instructor certificate to FAA for review, accept 90-day suspension if they want. In exchange, you keep Mia as student, assign new instructor for remaining training, validate her 22 hours as legitimate training because they are, and remove anonymous post and issue statement that academy investigated and found student met all standards." "Alex, no!" Mia grabbed his arm. "You can't! Flying is your life! You wanted to be airline captain! You can't lose job for me!" Alex turned to her, in front of Director and HR, and cupped her face, not caring about policy anymore, thumbs wiping tears. "Mia, listen to me, Future Captain. Flying is my life, yes. But you taught me there is life after landing. Before you, I lived in cockpit, hotel, crew bunk. No home. You are my home airport, remember? I can get another instructor job in 90 days, any academy will hire me. But you... you have $80,000 scholarship, dream since you were little girl watching planes. I will not let 22 hours and rumor take that. I pushed you to fly solo so you would know you can fly without me. Now prove it. Fly without me." Mia sobbed, hugging him tight in office, uniform wrinkling, not caring. Ms. Patel was crying too, secretly. Director Thompson stood, walked to window, long pause. "Alex Hayes, you are an i***t in love. Biggest i***t I ever trained. You could have waited 3 months until she finished private license, then dated, no policy violation. But you couldn't wait, because you are idiot." Alex laughed wetly, holding Mia. "Yes, sir." "So... here's what will happen, because I like you both and I checked GoPro footage this morning at 5 AM before you arrived - all 22 hours. And you are right, you were harder on her than any student." He turned. "I am not accepting your resignation. I am suspending you without pay for 30 days for policy violation, not 90. You will do 20 hours of online ethics training. You will not instruct Miss Carter ever again - she gets new instructor, female, Lisa, effective tomorrow. Your relationship... after she gets private license, in 2 months, when she is no longer your student, I don't care what you do, marry her for all I care. But until then, no contact on academy property, no flights together, no kissing at 35,000 feet where other pilots can take photo." Mia gasped. "Her hours?" "Her hours are valid. I reviewed stage check, I reviewed tapes. She earned them. She keeps them. 22 hours stay in logbook. She continues training." Alex closed eyes in relief, holding Mia tighter. "But one more condition," Director said, pointing at Alex. "You will propose to me a new policy draft for consensual relationship disclosure, so future i***t instructors in love don't end up like you. You write it during your 30-day suspension. 10 pages." Alex laughed, real laugh, "Yes, sir." Ms. Patel smiled, "And Miss Carter, you will write statement that relationship was consensual, you were never pressured, and you will attend counseling session about power dynamics, standard procedure, not punishment." Mia nodded, tears still falling, but happy tears now. "Now get out of my office, both of you, before I change mind and make suspension 60 days. And Hayes, take your girlfriend for ice cream, she looks like she needs it, and you... you need to shave." Alex and Mia walked out holding hands, past staring students, past whispers, but heads high. In hallway, Lisa waited, new instructor, and hugged Mia. "I got you, girl. He trained you too well, you will finish private in 2 weeks. And Alex... see you in 30 days, i***t. Don't get fat during suspension." Alex saluted, then looked at Mia, 30 days no contact on property, but he mouthed: _Call me at midnight. Every night. I will be waiting._ Mia mouthed back: _I will. I love you, Captain._ That night, first night of suspension, Alex sat in his apartment, flight jacket on chair, Mia's hair tie on wrist, phone in hand at 11:59 PM waiting for call. Mia sat in dorm, wings pinned on pillow, logbook open at 22 hours, phone in hand. At midnight, both called at same time. And 30 days of secret phone love began. please leave a comment 🥺 thank you
