The night was calm. I lay on the bed, one arm tucked under my head, staring at the ceiling. Then a faint scent of jasmine drifted through the room as Evelyn walked in, wrapped in a silk robe, her damp hair cascading over her shoulders. She slipped under the sheets beside me and lay on her side, facing away, silent. My gaze settled on her. I knew that silence. It wasn’t peace.
