Chapter 5

1846 Words
Sebastian stood at the edge of his childhood home in Campeche, gazing out at the ocean as the waves crashed against the rocky shore. The sun was setting, casting a golden hue over everything, but today the beauty felt muted, overshadowed by the news he had just received. His mother had passed away two weeks ago, leaving him a legacy of love but also a tangled web of secrets. Among those secrets was the revelation that he was the son of Eduardo Hernandez, the richest man in Mexico. He had always believed he was an ordinary man. He had spent most of his life in Campeche, working as a fisherman, a bartender and raising his five-year-old daughter, Ama, alone. His mother, Rosa, had been his only family. She was a kind but secretive woman who had never spoken much about his father. Whenever he asked about him, asides saying he died in the military, she would simply say, "Some things are better left in the past, mijo." He had learned not to ask questions But now, with the death of his mother, the truth had come crashing down on him. He was not just a poor boy from Campeche; he was the heir to a fortune that could change everything. The decision to travel to Monterrey came quickly. He needed to confront his father's empire, to learn who he was meant to be in a world that seemed so foreign. Sebastian felt betrayed, angry, confused but above all, lost. He had spent years struggling, believing he had no one but his mother. And now, the father he had never known was alive, living in wealth and luxury while Sebastian and Ama had barely scraped by. Could he just walk into this man's life and demand answers? And what about Ama? She had only ever known Campeche, the simple life by the sea. How would she adjust to Monterey, a place of skyscrapers, wealth, and power? But there was no turning back now. He needed to know the truth. With a heavy heart, Sebastian packed their few belongings. He told Ama they were going on an adventure, though he wasn’t sure what awaited them. He bought two bus tickets for the long journey to Monterey. He was leaving everything he knew behind, his friends, his humble life, the comfort of familiar streets. As the bus rumbled along the dusty roads, Sebastian stared out the window, lost in thought. His daughter slept with her head against his arm, unaware of the storm brewing inside him. Would Eduardo accept him? Or would he reject him the way he had done to his mother all those years ago? But there was no turning back now. He needed to know the truth. **** The bus arrived in Monterey late in the evening. The city was overwhelming; tall buildings, bright lights, and people who walked with purpose, dressed in expensive clothes. It was nothing like Campeche, where time seemed to move slower, where the ocean was always in sight. As Sebastian stepped off the bus, he was met with a rush of sounds; honking cars, street vendors shouting, and the chatter of people rushing to their destinations. It was a stark contrast to the quiet life he had known. Sebastian made his way to the address his mother had given him; a sprawling estate on the outskirts of the city. Each step felt heavier as he approached the grand entrance, flanked by manicured hedges and impressive gates. Sebastian held Ama’s hand tightly as they stood in front of a massive iron gate, leading to Eduardo Hernandez’s estate. He hesitated before pressing the intercom button, a mix of excitement and fear swirling within him. A deep voice answered. "Who is this?" Sebastian hesitated before speaking. "My name is Sebastian… Rosa’s son." There was silence. Then, the gate slowly creaked open revealing a well-dressed man who introduced himself as Javier, the family’s personal assistant. He gestured for Sebastian to follow him inside. The interior of the house was stunning—marble floors, chandeliers that sparkled like stars, and art pieces that could be found in museums. It was a world of opulence, one that made Sebastian feel small and insignificant. Javier led him to a large study, taking Ama away with him ensuring she would be looked after, he believed this was to give them privacy. Inside, an older man with piercing blue eyes and gray hair stood waiting. Eduardo Hernandez. Sebastian could see traces of himself in the man’s face—the same sharp jawline, the same intense gaze. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Eduardo exhaled sharply. "So, it's true." Sebastian clenched his fists. "You knew about me?" Eduardo looked away. "I suspected. But I was never sure." Anger bubbled inside Sebastian. "You left my mother to struggle alone. You never looked for us." Eduardo’s face hardened. "I didn’t even know she was pregnant until it was too late. I believed you were never born" Sebastian took a deep breath, fighting against the nervous flutter in his stomach. “I came because my mother… she told me about you after she passed.” Eduardo studied him for a moment, his blue eyes searching. “I’m sorry for your loss. Your mother was a remarkable woman.” Sebastian nodded, feeling a mix of pride and sadness at the mention of his mother. “She said you were my father, and that I could come here.” “Yes, I am your father,” Eduardo replied, his tone shifting slightly. “But I cannot pretend that this is easy. You have come into a life filled with expectations and responsibilities.” Sebastian's heart sank. “I just want to understand… to know who I am.” Eduardo leaned back against the table, a contemplative look crossing his face. “You are my son, and you have every right to be here. But this world is not kind to those who are unprepared.” Before he could say another word, Ama rushed into the study tugging at his hand. "Papa, who is this man?" she asked, her big brown eyes looking up at Eduardo. Sebastian swallowed the lump in his throat. "He’s… he’s your grandfather." For the first time, something softened in Eduardo’s expression. His eyes flickered to Ama, and for a long moment, he simply stared. Then, unexpectedly, he crouched down to her level. "You have Rosa’s eyes," he murmured. Ama blinked at him. "You knew my abuela?" Eduardo nodded, his voice quieter. "Yes, I did. And I cared about her very much." The room was thick with emotion. Sebastian still wasn’t sure if he could forgive this man, but at that moment, he saw something in his father’s face, regret, perhaps. Javier rushed in to get Ama, I had to sweet talk her to leave me and her grandfather alone before she agreed to leave with him. “What do you mean?” Sebastian asked, confusion clouding his thoughts. Eduardo stood and walked to a large window, looking out over the sprawling estate. “I built this empire from nothing, Sebastian. It requires strength, cunning, and the ability to navigate difficult waters. It’s not enough to simply inherit wealth; you must learn to wield it.” Sebastian felt a spark of determination. “I want to learn. I want to be a part of this.” Maybe, just maybe, this journey was not just about uncovering the past. Maybe it was about building something new. Eduardo turned, a slight smile playing on his lips. “Then we will begin. But know this: every decision comes with consequences, and the world will not hesitate to test you.” **** Sebastian never imagined he would find himself standing inside one of the grandest mansions in Monterey, surrounded by wealth beyond anything he had ever known. He had spent his whole life struggling, working hard to provide for his daughter, Ama, without expecting help from anyone. Now, he was face-to-face with his father, Eduardo Hernandez the most powerful man in the city and his entire world was shifting. He had learned he had a step sister, who managed other branches of the company abroad while his step mother died during childbirth. Ama, innocent and full of curiosity, had taken to Eduardo immediately. She asked him endless questions about his house, his life, and the stories he had about her late grandmother, Rosa. It was strange to watch his daughter interact with this man, this stranger who was supposed to be his father. Sebastian, however, was not so easily won over. After years of hardship, trust did not come easily to him. He still resented the fact that Eduardo had not been part of his life. And yet, here he was, being offered a place in the Hernandez family, being given access to a life he had never dreamed of. But there was a catch, there was always a catch. Eduardo made it clear that being accepted into the family wasn’t just about blood. It was about status, power, and tradition. "You may be my son by blood, Sebastian," Eduardo said one evening as they sat in his grand study, "but if you want to be recognized as a true Hernandez, you must live as one." Sebastian frowned. "What does that mean?" Eduardo leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. "It means I will teach you how to navigate this world. How to carry yourself as a man of wealth and influence. And most importantly, it means you must secure your place by aligning with the right people. That includes marriage." Sebastian’s body stiffened. "Marriage?" Eduardo nodded. "You are no longer just a fisherman from Campeche. You are my son. That comes with responsibility. In our world, alliances are made through marriage. If you truly want to be part of this family, you must marry someone suitable." Sebastian’s jaw clenched. "I didn’t come here for wealth or power. I came for answers." "And you have them," Eduardo replied smoothly. "But now you must decide if you want more than just answers. If you want security for Ama. A future for her that you never had." Sebastian’s chest tightened. Ama. Everything he did was for her. Could he really walk away from this opportunity? But an arranged marriage? Sebastian had already locked his heart away. He had once believed in love, had once given his heart completely, to Ama’s mother. And she had abandoned him, choosing a man with more money, more status, leaving him to raise their daughter alone. He had vowed never to trust a woman again, never to put himself in a position where love could destroy him. And now Eduardo expected him to marry for status, not even for love? "I won’t do it," Sebastian said firmly, standing from his chair. "I don’t need your wealth that badly." Eduardo remained calm, watching him with a knowing gaze. "Think about Ama. Think about what she deserves. This isn’t just about you anymore." That was the problem. It was never just about him.
