New Frienemies

The blond guy was still smiling, looking up at Michael. The gang had another werewolf working for them and no one had said anything about it. Michael was well aware he was far from having all the information he needed on the gang. Yet, something like this was mojer. And he hadn’t had any idea about it. “What?” Jess asked, the smile dropping from his face. He really was cute. “You are their dog?” Michael asked eventually, lifting an eyebrow. “Why do you want to put a leash on me?” Jesse moved to sit on the table. He acted as if he was home, or owned the place. Jesse had a very light air around him, and it was like he brightened the whole place simply by being there. He definitely didn’t look like someone who worked for a criminal gang. Especially not for someone like Richard. And that got on Michael's nerves even more for some reason. “Just shut up and eat your...whatever. “ Michael growled, “I’m serious enough with the clowning.“ “Yeah, okay.” Jesse nodded while devouring the chocolate bar. Simple and without arguing. For one thing Jesse had at least enough sense to gather Michael was getting more and more irritated. Even if it took him a while. “So?” “So, the group took me in last year. “ Jesse provided shortly. “And what are you doing here?” “They sent me to check up on you.” The guy was way too honest, but then again- there was no point in lying. Michael could extract the truth with or without talking, they both knew it. Judging by the way he behaved, and what he'd said earlier, Jesse really was new to the whole werewolf thing, and didn’t have much experience. probably none whatsoever. Michael moved and pulled one of the chairs to sit in. “What’s so much to check on? See if I've done something stupid.” “Come on, man. You’ve been here for what, a month or so. “ “And?” “And, dude- Killian?” Jesse snorted. And then it dawned on Michael. Garrey was very much against Michael going with Killian and what Michael had assumed was being confirmed with Jesse’s next words. “The boss rarely lets Killian walk wherever he wants to, especially not with someone that just showed up. I guess he freaked out or something. But they never told me I’d be facing someone like you. I also had no idea you were a wolf, hah.“ No one knew about Michael, then. At least that was a good thing, although they’d soon find out, probably. Michael moved closer to where Jesse was sitting cross-legged. “Do you work for Garrey, or Richard directly?” Michael asked. “Garrey. Few people get the chance to talk to Richard, you know. And Killian is definitely one of them, if you didn’t know that already. That’s why…” Jesse waved a hand “you, Killian is weird, you know?” “Why, Killian is not tied to him, or something. “ “Yeah, but…” Jesse shrugged. “The boss is a bit of a control freak, that’s all. But you look like one too. “ “I’m not.” Miichael said shortly and tried to suppress the unexplainable feeling of anger, as well as the surprising remark. “What did your check up tell you, then?” Jesse smiled at the question and crushed the package of the chocolate bar. “It tells me you’re kind of different.” “From who? The other werewolves?” “No, no- I mean...haven’t seen many, anyway. “ “How so?” “It’s just...there aren’t any other wolves working for the gang.’ “No?” “No.” “Or you don't know about them?” Jesse made a face. “Are you trying to prove how bad-ass you are? Fine, if you’re pulling the whole alpha- omega s**t on me - don’t. I know you’re way stronger than me, I get it, I’m not fighting to be the strongest.” Wolves and their obsession with power, Michael thought. “There’s no such thing here. “ Michael said. “Anyway, you were saying you’re the only one. “ Jesse shifted in his seat uncomfortably. “Yes. And I don’t know my parents, I basically don’t have any relatives. And if you haven't noticed, there aren’t many wolves walking around here. “ Jesse leaned forward and his entire expression changed in an instant. “Are there many wolves where you come from?” “You really don’t know anything about being a wolf, do you?” Jesse was silent. “And they send you to check on me?” Michael was dying for a beer, or something stronger, but he was sure going out to get one wasn’t an option. Jesse looked so open, and Michael realized he’d been way too hard on him. He groaned and tried again. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to undermine you. But to your question- No, not really many wolves out there. Quite a few actually.“ “And what do those “quite a few” do?” “Pretty much what I do. “ “They’re bodyguards?” Jesse lifted an eyebrow. “Really?” “I’m not a...listen, tell your boss that if he has any questions for me, I’ll be right here. He doesn’t have to send you if he wants to know anything about me? Okay? “ Jesse paused. “Woah, man. You really don’t wanna do that. “ He definitely wanted to. But Jesse was right. And Michael was acting dumb. Real dumb. That’s why he reminded himself the last thing he needed was getting on Garrey’s wrong side- especially now- when his chances of somehow getting closer to the gang leaders didn’t seem that unrealistic the way they did only a month back. So he decided to go with the flow and the whole thing. Answering the questions would be much better than kicking Jesse’s ass out of here and sending him home with nothing. Because if Jesse didn’t go back with any info from tonight, the gang would send more, other people, who weren’t going to be cute Jesse and Michael would have to do stuff he didn’t want to do. So, if Garrey wanted to know more about him, let him. That’s why Michael quickly stepped back into his role- the one of a mafia member from the lower ranks and repeated the tale of how being a bodyguard was what he’d been doing his whole life and nothing else.
