📖 Chapter Four: Shadows at the Border
The vampire’s grin widened, sharp and knowing. Aurora’s wolf bristled, claws itching beneath her skin, but Kael didn’t move his body a shield between her and the intruder.
“What do you want?” Kael growled, his voice edged with steel.
The vampire tilted his head, eyes glinting with mockery. “What I want? Oh, nothing… yet. But what I’ve seen tonight” he laughed softly, cruelly, “is worth more than a thousand wolf corpses.”
Aurora’s breath caught. Her blood ran cold.
Kael stepped forward, fury rolling off him, but before he could lunge, three more shadows emerged from the trees scarlet eyes gleaming, fangs flashing.
The lead vampire raised a hand. “Not tonight, Alpha heir. We’re not here to fight.” He leaned closer, inhaling deeply. His gaze slid from Kael to Aurora, savoring the air between them. “Mmm. Forbidden love. Enemy mates. A child of both packs, perhaps? How deliciously tragic.”
Aurora’s chest constricted, horror slamming into her. They know.
The vampire smiled like a snake before retreating into the shadows. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell… not yet. But secrets,” his voice lingered, a whisper through the trees, “always taste sweeter when they rot.”
Then they were gone.
The forest fell silent, but the damage was done. Aurora’s heart pounded as she turned to Kael.
“They’ll use this against us.”
His jaw was tight, fury crackling in his every word. “Then we’ll kill them first.”
But Aurora shook her head. “No. Vampires don’t strike openly they corrupt, they whisper. They’ll spread poison through both packs until we’re destroyed from the inside.”
Kael’s eyes burned into hers, and for a moment, the bond pulled too strong to resist. His hand brushed her arm an anchor, a promise.
“Then we’ll keep this hidden. No one can know.”
But even as he said it, Aurora felt the weight of doom settle in her chest. The vampires knew. Their love was no longer just forbidden it was exposed.
Somewhere in the darkness, unseen eyes still watched. And Aurora understood with bone deep certainty:
The curse of the Moon Goddess had begun.
