đź“– Chapter Eight: Caught in the Dark
Aurora’s chest heaved, every breath a war between instinct and duty. Kael’s grip on her hand was iron, his eyes burning with the raw desperation of a man cornered.
The patrol’s howls grew louder. Branches cracked in the distance Moonfang warriors closing in.
“Aurora,” Kael hissed, dragging her closer. His heat swallowed her, the mate bond searing through her veins. “Choose me.”
Her throat closed. Her father’s face flashed in her mind, his voice like thunder: The Bloodfangs are filth. You see one, you kill one.
But her wolf howled differently, clawing at her insides, begging her not to let him go.
She froze. One second too long.
The patrol burst through the trees. Six warriors in silver armor, their eyes blazing gold as they took in the scene the slaughtered scout, the Bloodfang heir standing over him, Aurora at his side.
“Alpha’s daughter!” one shouted, shock cutting through his rage. “Step away from him!”
Aurora opened her mouth nothing came out.
Kael’s snarl split the night. His claws lengthened, his wolf thrashing beneath his skin. He could fight, but he’d never survive six. Not without tearing through her pack’s warriors and sealing his guilt.
The leader of the patrol raised his blade, pointing it at Kael’s chest. “For the Alpha, we end him here!”
Aurora’s wolf screamed. Mate. Mate. Protect him.
Her hand shot out before she could think, blocking the strike. Steel grazed her skin, drawing blood. Gasps tore from the warriors.
“Aurora!” the leader roared, stunned. “What are you doing?”
Her heart hammered, words clawing at her throat but refusing to leave. Her hesitation had doomed them both Kael for being caught, her for standing with him.
And in that heartbeat of silence, another sound rose.
Slow. Sinister. Applause.
From the shadows stepped a figure cloaked in black, crimson eyes gleaming. A vampire.
The warriors stiffened, growls ripping from their throats. But the creature only smiled, sharp teeth flashing.
“Ah… so the little Alpha princess has chosen her side.”
Aurora’s stomach dropped. She hadn’t chosen at all. And now the night itself had betrayed her.q
