The Poisoned Cup

Trusting a killer to guard your life is a very fast way to end up in a coffin. By the third long day inside the suffocating stone walls of Blackwood Manor, Liam had fully deduced the underlying plot of the story. The massive mansion was heavily haunted by the vengeful, weeping spirits of poisoned ancestors who roamed the dark corridors at night. More importantly, someone very close to him in the current household was actively trying to kill the young heir to claim the vast family fortune. The grand dining hall was filled with the clinking of heavy silver cutlery and the low, false murmurs of his distant relatives. Liam sat at the head of the table, his weak chest aching under the tight velvet vest. During this tense evening banquet with the scripted non-player character relatives, a servant stepped forward and placed a tall chalice of dark red wine directly in front of Liam. Liam did not touch it immediately. He leaned forward slightly, his sharp eyes catching a strange, oily metallic sheen swirling on the dark red surface near the rim of the glass. He raised his head slowly, looking across the long table. He instantly caught the sharp, deceitful glint of anticipation dancing in his stepmother’s cold eyes. She quickly looked away, coughing delicately into a silk handkerchief. Julian stood directly behind Liam’s high-backed wooden chair, completely motionless. He was watching the entire exchange with a cruel, mocking smile dancing on his lips. He was simply waiting for Liam to raise the glass to his lips, drink the laced wine, and trigger his own narrative execution. Liam smiled faintly, his panic completely hidden behind a mask of calm confidence. He slowly picked up the heavy crystal glass by its stem, turned his torso around in the chair, and held the wine out toward his silver-haired butler. "Julian," Liam said, his voice quiet but remarkably clear across the silent end of the table. "My throat feels incredibly parched tonight, but a truly loyal servant should always taste the master's vintage first to ensure its quality. Drink it for me." Julian froze, his burning eyes dropping down to the dark liquid. He stared at the glass for a long, silent moment, his fingers twitching slightly at his sides. Because he was locked into the role of a non-player character servant in this specific dining scene, the system rules were absolute. He could not disobey a direct, logical command from his aristocratic lord without triggering a massive, painful system penalty. Julian let out a soft, low chuckle that vibrated in his chest. He looked up, his gaze locking onto Liam with a mix of fury and dark amusement. "As you wish, my lord. Your health is always my top priority." Julian smoothly took the cup from Liam’s pale hand, raised it to his lips without a single second of hesitation, and drained the entire contents in one long, aggressive gulp. He slammed the empty crystal glass back down onto the silver tray with a sharp, echoing clatter. The heavy dose of arsenic and belladonna dissolved completely harmlessly against Julian's incredibly high-level player statistics, leaving him totally unaffected. However, across the table, the stepmother let out a sharp, terrified gasp of absolute horror, her face turning entirely pale as she knocked her own fork onto the floor. Her sudden explosion of panic exposed her deep guilt to every single person in the room. "Is something wrong, dear mother?" Liam asked smoothly, turning his head back to face her with a calm, dangerous grin. "You look as though you have just seen one of our family ghosts." The stepmother clutched her pearl necklace, her lips trembling violently. "I, no, nothing is wrong, William. I merely thought the wine was, well, entirely too strong for a boy of your incredibly poor health." "Do not worry yourself," Liam replied, leaning back comfortably in his chair as he felt Julian’s intense gaze burning into the back of his neck. "My butler has an exceptionally strong stomach for these kinds of family traditions. Is that not right, Julian?" "Indeed, Lord William," Julian whispered from the shadows behind him, his velvet voice laced with a terrifying promise of future violence. "I can swallow almost any poison you throw at me. But I do wonder what your stepmother will try to feed you for breakfast tomorrow morning." "We will face that chapter when we get to it," Liam murmured quietly, his eyes never leaving the trembling woman across the table. "For now, let us enjoy the rest of the banquet." Julian leaned down slightly, his silver hair brushing against Liam's shoulder as he cleared away the empty plate. "You played your card perfectly tonight, archivist. You forced my hand using the butler script. But remember, the week is half over, and a cornered rat always gets desperate. She won't use a cup next time." "Then you had better stay awake, Julian," Liam whispered back, his voice cool and steady. "Because if she manages to stab me in my sleep while you are on guard duty, we both go down with this house." Julian’s smile stretched wide in the dim candlelight, his white teeth flashing dangerously. "Oh, I will be watching very closely, little bird. I would hate to miss the moment your luck finally runs out.".
