System Sanctions

A monster is only as dangerous as the rules that allow him to hunt. Julian did not answer Liam with words. Instead, his dark eyes flashed with an immediate, lethal rage. He snapped his right arm forward, his hand moving so fast it became a blur in the dim candlelight. As his fingers raced toward Liam’s exposed throat, his fingernails rapidly lengthened, hardening into five sharp, deadly points that hummed with a faint crimson energy. Liam flinched, instinctively closing his eyes tightly and bracing himself for the agonizing end. He expected to feel his throat torn open, but the lethal strike never arrived. A loud, sharp crackle of bright blue electricity suddenly erupted out of thin air. The blue lightning slammed directly into Julian’s chest with the force of a speeding truck, throwing him backward and sending him skidding heavily across the polished hardwood floor. The heavy dining chairs knocked against each other as Julian crashed into the far wall. Julian hissed loudly through his teeth, his predatory grace entirely shattered for a brief second. He knelt on the floor, clutching his chest with a trembling hand as wisps of dark gray smoke rose from the scorched fabric of his black butler uniform. He glared up at the ceiling, his jaw clenched in pure fury. A familiar, icy mechanical voice broadcasted loudly inside their minds, cutting through the tense silence of the grand dining hall. "Narrative Restriction Active. The Character Julian the Butler cannot harm Lord William without a valid narrative trigger. Penalty for breaking world logic: fifty percent Stat Reduction." Liam slowly opened his eyes, his breathing shallow and rapid. He raised a shaking hand to his forehead, wiping away a thick bead of cold sweat that had pooled along his hairline. He looked over at Julian, who was still kneeling on the floor, and a sudden wave of realization washed over him. He understood the system’s loophole instantly. Inside this book, Julian was not an omnipotent player anymore. He was bound by the rigid laws of the written story. "You cannot touch me," Liam said. His voice was trembling violently at first, but it gained a sudden, firm confidence as he spoke the words aloud. "You literally cannot hurt me. Not until the plot allows it. And according to the layout of this specific story, you are my loyal protector." Julian slowly rose to his feet, dusting off his knees. He straightened his damaged jacket, his amber eyes narrowing to sharp slits as he stared back at the frail young man sitting at the table. His expression was a terrifying mix of cold fury and a strange, newfound fascination. "A temporary shield, little bird," Julian muttered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low pitch. "You think you are safe because of a system warning? Let us see how well you play the game when the plot changes." "The plot will change when I decide to change it," Liam countered, leaning forward against the table. "Right now, the system is protecting me from you. If you try to force your way through that restriction again, it will simply strip away the rest of your stats. Am I wrong?" Julian let out a cold, sharp laugh, stepping back toward the long dining table with slow, deliberate strides. "You are a bold little rabbit, William. You think a fifty percent reduction makes me helpless? I could still snap your spine with a single finger if the world rules allowed it." "But they do not allow it," Liam said, refusing to back down despite the terrifying aura rolling off the silver-haired man. "That is the entire point. The system wants me to survive you, and it wants me to tame you. If you break the logic of the manuscript, the world punishes you automatically." "Tame me?" Julian sneered, stopping just a few feet away from Liam's chair. "You are playing with fire, archivist. A script has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The narrative restrictions will not last for the entire seven days. Every murder mystery has a moment where the guard drops, where the killer finds a loophole in the house rules." "Then I will simply have to find the loopholes first," Liam replied, adjusting his ruffled cuffs to hide the lingering tremor in his fingers. "If you are forced to be my butler, then you are going to act like one. Tell me, what is the next event in this chapter?" Julian leaned his hands on the back of a nearby chair, his knuckles white against the dark wood. "The script says your family is preparing a welcome dinner for you tonight. They are all very eager to see how weak you look after your long illness." "They want to see if I am close to death," Liam corrected, his mind working quickly through the typical tropes of a Victorian thriller. "They want to gauge exactly how much time they have left before they can steal the inheritance." "Exactly," Julian said, a wicked, amused smile slowly creeping back onto his face. "And since I am your loyal servant, I will be standing right behind you the entire evening. I will watch every single one of them slip poison into your glass or slide a dagger into your coat." "And you will stop them," Liam said firmly. Julian tilted his head, his silver hair catching the flickering candlelight. "Oh? And why would I do that, little bird? If an NPC kills you, I do not get penalized by the system. The restriction only stops me from harming you myself. If your stepmother decides to feed you arsenic, I will gladly pull up a chair and watch you choke." Liam shook his head, a cold smile appearing on his own pale face. "You are forgetting something, Julian. If an NPC kills me, the story ends in a failure state. The world collapses. If the world collapses while you are trapped inside it with a fifty percent stat reduction, what do you think happens to your soul? Do you think you just pop back into the library unharmed?" Julian’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a tense, calculating expression. He stared at Liam, his amber eyes scanning the frail young man’s face for any sign of a bluff. "You do not know that for certain," Julian said, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "You are guessing." "Are you willing to risk your life on that guess?" Liam asked, his voice steady and sharp. "You are a high level player, Julian. You have everything to lose. I have nothing but a level F library and a fragile body. If we die together, I lose very little. You lose your entire existence." The silence stretched between them for a long, agonizing moment. The candles overhead sputtered, casting long, erratic shadows across the stone walls of the dining hall. Julian slowly pulled his hands away from the chair, his posture rigid. "You really are a piece of work, archivist," Julian said, a dark, dangerous respect bleeding into his tone. "You have no power, yet you are trying to hold a knife to my throat using nothing but the system's instruction manual." "I am doing what I have to do to stay alive," Liam answered, standing up slowly from his chair. His knees shook slightly, but he kept his balance, staring directly into the killer's eyes. "Now, clean up this mess and prepare for the dinner party. We have a family to deal with." Julian stared at him for three seconds before bowing low, a mocking but compliant gesture. "As you wish, Lord William. Let us see if your little brain can outsmart the poisoners tonight."
