When everyone was watching :3

--- Chapter Four: When Everyone Was Watching Elena should have known peace wouldn’t last. By Wednesday, the whispers weren’t whispers anymore. They were stares. Lingering ones. The kind that followed her from classroom to hallway, from hallway to cafeteria. It wasn’t loud or cruel — not yet. It was worse than that. Curious. Interested. She hated being interesting. As she stepped into class, she felt it immediately. The energy shifted. Conversations paused just slightly too long before continuing. Someone near the back muttered, “That’s her.” Her chest tightened. And then she saw him. Adrian was already in his seat — beside hers. Not pretending. Not hesitating. Not leaving space for doubt. He looked up when she entered. Not dramatic. Not exaggerated. Just calm. Like he’d been waiting. Her pulse jumped traitorously. She slid into the chair without speaking. “You’re tense,” he said quietly. “I’m fine.” “You’re not.” She didn’t respond. If she did, her voice might shake. Class began, but halfway through, the teacher made an announcement. “Group presentations,” she said, writing assignments on the board. “You’ll be paired with the person sitting next to you.” The room erupted. Laughter. Groans. Excited whispers. Elena felt her stomach drop. No. No, no, no. She turned slowly. Adrian didn’t look surprised. He looked almost… amused. “Guess we’re partners,” he said softly. Her throat went dry. A presentation meant standing in front of everyone. Together. Publicly. There would be no hiding. She had spent a year avoiding attention. And now she would be standing beside the most watched boy in school. Perfect. --- By lunch, it was official. Their names were written on the board under “Hart & Cross.” People noticed. Paige noticed most of all. “Well, isn’t that convenient?” Paige said sweetly as she passed Elena’s table. “Didn’t know you were aiming that high.” Elena’s fingers tightened around her fork. “I’m not aiming at anything,” she replied quietly. Paige smiled in that sharp way that wasn’t really a smile. “Sure.” Before Elena could respond, a chair scraped beside her. Adrian. He didn’t look at Paige. He didn’t need to. “Is there a problem?” he asked casually. Paige blinked, clearly not expecting him to intervene. “No,” she said quickly. “Just talking.” “Then talk somewhere else.” His tone wasn’t loud. But it wasn’t soft either. It was controlled. Final. Paige rolled her eyes and walked away, but Elena could feel the shift. The cafeteria had gone quieter around them. “You didn’t have to do that,” she murmured. “Yes, I did.” She looked at him. “Why?” He held her gaze steadily. “Because they think they can talk about you like you’re not there.” Her chest tightened. “And you don’t?” “I don’t talk about you at all,” he said. The way he said it made her heart trip over itself. --- After school, they stayed in the library to work on their presentation. Elena sat across from him, textbooks open, notes scattered between them. “This project is worth forty percent,” she said, focusing on something safe. Academic. Logical. “I’ll do my part,” he replied. “I know.” He paused. “You trust me?” The question caught her off guard. “I… I guess.” He leaned back slightly, studying her like she was the real assignment. “That’s dangerous.” Her breath hitched. “Trust?” “Me.” Silence fell between them. It wasn’t awkward. It was charged. She looked down quickly, pretending to reread a paragraph she hadn’t processed. “You’re not what people think,” she said quietly. “And what do they think?” “That you’re… untouchable.” A faint smile curved his lips. “And what do you think?” She hesitated. “I think you’re lonely.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. He went very still. For the first time since she’d met him, something flickered in his eyes — something unguarded. “You notice things,” he said softly. “I have to. When you’re quiet, you learn to observe.” He didn’t look away. Neither did she. And for a moment, the distance between them didn’t feel so large. --- The presentation day came faster than she wanted. When their names were called, Elena felt like she was walking toward execution. The classroom felt too small. Too bright. Too aware. She stepped forward beside Adrian. Whispers started immediately. She swallowed. Adrian didn’t. He stood confidently, but when he began speaking, something surprised her. He wasn’t showing off. He wasn’t performing. He was calm. Measured. Thoughtful. And when it was her turn— Her mind went blank. The words vanished. The room blurred. Her heartbeat roared in her ears. She couldn’t breathe. She hated this. She hated being watched. “Elena,” Adrian said softly, barely audible to anyone else. She blinked. He shifted slightly closer — not touching, but near enough that she could feel the warmth of him. “You’ve got this,” he murmured. Just two words. But steady. Certain. She inhaled. And this time, the words came. Slow at first. Then stronger. She spoke. Explained. Connected points. The room grew quiet. Not whispering. Listening. When they finished, the class applauded lightly. Elena returned to her seat in a daze. Her hands were shaking. “You did good,” Adrian said. She looked at him. He wasn’t teasing. He wasn’t smiling arrogantly. He looked proud. Of her. And something inside her shifted. Not dramatically. Not loudly. But enough. Enough to scare her. Because she realized something terrifying: She didn’t just feel noticed. She felt supported. And that was more dangerous than attention. --- As the final bell rang, Paige passed by her desk again. “This won’t last,” she said under her breath. Elena didn’t respond. But for the first time— She didn’t feel small. She felt… steady. Adrian stood beside her as they walked out together. “Same time tomorrow?” he asked. She hesitated. Only for a second. “Yes.” And as they stepped into the fading afternoon light, Elena realized something she hadn’t admitted yet: The distance between them was shrinking. And she wasn’t sure she wanted it to stop. ---
