CHAPTER TWO: THE WOLF SEVERERS (2).
The woman removed her mask, revealing a smooth dark skin with a pair of dazzling silver eyes and hair. “My name is Mariah.”
At the sight, a realization stunned Jacob. He could now pick up this woman's scent; she was just an omega werewolf – the weakest of the werewolf race. This discovery sent a thrill through Jacob. He had suddenly found a way to keep his life today. Adrenaline coursed through his entire body as he pulled on the last bit of energy in him.
Mariah lazily turned her gaze to her teammates. “These three partners with me are….”
Jacob suddenly rushed forward, successfully grabbing Mariah in his arms. With wide eyes, he had an extended claw right at her throat as he turned to the rest. “Make one more move and this pathetic omega bleeds a river!” Jacob moved his sharp claws closer to Mariah’s throat to prove he wouldn’t hesitate to carry out his threat. “Now, this is how it’s gonna go. You let me leave this place alive, and I extend the same mercy to your weak lady here.”
“You could have made things so much easier for yourself.”
Following Mariah’s words seconds later, the cold smile on Jacob’s face turned ugly and he suddenly let out a bloodcurdling scream. He could have never anticipated the sudden pain that exploded from his calf up to his thighs. He felt like every single cell in his body was on fire. What was going on with him? Lost in his agony, he had involuntarily let go of Mariah. He felt a deep urge to tear into his skin in hopes of alleviating this intense pain.
He did just that.
“What did you do to me?!”
Mariah calmly walked back to join her teammate. “Remember the arrow I shot into you? It had a trace of my blood on it. Through your wound, my blood had made it into your system.” She saw confusion amidst the pain in Jacob’s eyes, so she clarified. “My blood becomes silver on command once it’s been injected into a werewolf’s body.” She brought her hands and her fingers, with extended claws, curled upward. “With my wolf, I make my blood feed you the most intense pain you’d ever experience in your life.”
Jacob’s body was riddled with pain once again. He realized the biggest mistake he made was to assume this girl was an ordinary omega. This kind of werewolf was unheard of.
Mariah, deciding it was enough, halted her hand movements. She then pulled out another dagger. “Now, I advise you to surrender to your fate. It will make things much easier for y…”
Jacob began laughing as his wide eyes danced around and it became clear the rogue alpha was losing his mind. He suddenly shifted into his wolf form; the animal growled loudly with saliva dripping from its mouth as it ran with ferocity toward Mariah.
Mariah is quick to reign in her shock as she runs back to her friends. "Nigel!" She glanced at the teenage boy on the jaguar's back as she suddenly shifted into a five-foot wolf with silver fur.
“On it!” The teenager raised his hand in Mariah’s direction and the silver-fur wolf suddenly became invisible.
“Champ!” Mariah’s voice could be heard once again.
The scary alpha wolf growled out in response and it ran five steps forward before lowering his body. There was a thud on the large wolf’s back before it suddenly threw its head in the air.
The rogue wolf was lost for a second on where its target was until it caught the shadow of a wolf shifting back into a human form. Then the rogue wolf felt something suddenly land on its back and a pair of legs wrapped around its neck. In the next second, two sharp objects were plunged deep into the back of its neck. It didn't get to struggle as it suddenly felt the poison from the silver in its body reach its heart.
Nigel dropped his hands with a sigh and Mariah, in her human form, became visible once again. She was saddled on the rogue wolf’s neck as she plunged her two daggers deeper into its neck. The rogue wolf slumped to the ground, dead.
The mission was done.
Mariah got off the dead wolf’s neck, leaving her daggers plunged in. She began severing its head completely. Her face held disgust as blood splattered everywhere.
“Wooooh! Success! But that took too long.” Nigel came down from the jaguar’s back. “Do you guys know how much energy it took for me to maintain that cloak for over an hour? I’m gonna need to sleep it off for a week at least. Right, Byron?” He slapped the jaguar’s side.
The large jaguar suddenly shrunk and it shifted into a naked teenage boy with pale skin, onyx eyes, and short brown hair. "It wouldn't have taken this long if sis wasn't teasing the target so much."
“Here.” Nigel handed over a bag over to Byron.
Byron took out the clothes in the bag and he put them on. He then pulled the taller boy closer before wrapping his arms around his shoulder. "You spent over an hour sitting on my back, so it's only fair you carry me back to the car."
“Uh uh! No way.”
Mariah ignored the two teenagers bickering as she had just finished cutting off the wolf’s head. She took out her phone and took pictures. “Champ, time to pack up.”
The scary-looking alpha wolf shifted back into the muscular man. He took off his mask to reveal a light-skin chiselled face with blue eyes and blonde hair on his back, He was attractive. "Roger that. Have you sent proof to the client?"
“Still waiting.”
The two watched as the wolf shrunk back into a human corpse. It was then Mariah took another round of pictures. She then typed away at her phone for a while before turning to her team.
“Let’s go home.”
____________________________________________________________
The group of four consisting of Mariah, Byron, Nigel, and Champ made it to their apartment, which was on the twentieth floor of an exquisite tower.
Mariah slid the key card through and she opened the door to find the living room was dark. The light suddenly came on the next second.
“Surprise!”
Poppers went off, showering Mariah with confetti. She quickly realized the room was filled with almost twenty faces, all of whom she recognized.
“Happy birthday to you!”
The crowd began to sing the birthday song. Byron came up to wrap his arms around his sister before kissing her cheek as the song continued.
“You guys! You didn’t have to.” Mariah received a hug from both Champ and Byron. She glanced at the decorations in the living room. “Whose idea was this?”
“That would be me.”
Mariah turned her gaze to find a middle-aged woman walking towards her with a smile and a sizeable cake in her hand.
The woman smiled brightly. “Happy birthday, baby.”
“Jen-ma, you shouldn’t have.” A teary-eyed Mariah rushed over to side-hug the woman. “You’re already so busy with the restaurant. You even brought all the staff members.”
"Nonsense." Jen-ma reprimanded lightly. "It's my daughter's twenty-fifth birthday. The restaurant won't collapse on one-day absence." She smooshed her face against Mariah's. "You're my precious gem."
The crowd was awed at the sight.
Byron loudly cleared his throat. “Last time I checked, I’m the youngest here. Shouldn’t I be your most precious gem?”
“Oh, shut up. You can be my precious gem when it’s your birthday.”
Byron whined out at the injustice while the crowd burst into laughter. It was a lively atmosphere that evening as the birthday celebration commenced into the night. Hours later, people had started leaving the apartment when Mariah got an alert. She checked her phone to find a notification from the Lycan-Chaser app, so she excused herself. Once she was alone, she opened the app to find her team had just gotten a gig from a new client.
