The Vampire's Invitation

Nocturne Falls looked like a city that had made a deal with darkness and won. The streets glowed beneath antique gas lamps. Black stone buildings lined narrow roads. Elegant men and women moved through the night wearing expensive coats, their pale faces illuminated by moonlight. Nobody smiled. Nobody hurried. And everyone seemed to be watching. "Tell me again why we're walking directly into vampire territory?" Lily muttered. Marcus didn't even glance at her. "Because the Blood Court keeps its secrets here." "Great. Nothing says healthy life choices like visiting the headquarters of an ancient blood-drinking conspiracy." Jace snorted. Marcus ignored both of them. As usual. The city unsettled Lily immediately. Not because it looked dangerous. Because it looked normal. Too normal. Like a beautiful photograph hiding something rotten underneath. The tiny bat-shaped mark on the back of her neck suddenly burned. Lily stiffened. There it was again. The strange sensation she'd been feeling since leaving Alaska. A whisper. A pull. A voice buried somewhere beneath her skin. Come alone. Her pulse quickened. East district. Five minutes. She almost stumbled. Marcus noticed instantly. His hand landed on her lower back. Warm. Protective. Possessive. "Lily?" "I'm fine." A lie. A terrible one. His golden eyes narrowed. Clearly unconvinced. Fortunately, they arrived at a small hotel before he could question her further. The building sat at the edge of the city overlooking a black river. Old. Quiet. Temporary. Perfect. Or so Marcus believed. Two hours later, Lily slipped out of her room. Alone. — The voice guided her through winding alleys. Past abandoned churches. Past closed shops. Past shadows that seemed to move on their own. The burning at her neck grew stronger. Almost painful. Finally she reached a narrow courtyard. Empty. Silent. Waiting. A figure emerged from darkness. Tall. Thin. Perfectly dressed. His eyes glowed crimson. Vampire. Not hiding it. Not pretending. The man bowed. "Miss Harper." Lily's hand immediately moved toward her silver knife. The vampire smiled. "Please. If Lord Caspian wished you dead, we wouldn't be having a conversation." Not reassuring. At all. "What do you want?" The vampire produced a small glass vial. Dark silver liquid swirled inside. "The Lord sends a gift." Lily didn't take it. "What is it?" "A serum." "That sounds sketchy." The vampire actually laughed. Fair enough. "It masks your scent." Now she paid attention. "What?" "For twenty-four hours, your blood will smell completely human." Lily stared. The implications hit instantly. Marcus. The wolves. Tracking. Protection. Control. All gone. For one day. Freedom. The vampire's smile widened slightly. "He thought you might appreciate privacy." Nothing about this felt free. "What does he want in return?" The vampire's eyes gleamed. "Smart." Lily folded her arms. "Answer the question." The smile disappeared. "The serum carries a cost." Of course it did. Everything in her life carried a cost. "How much?" "Your Lunar Blood abilities will permanently weaken." Silence. The courtyard suddenly felt colder. "Weaken how?" "Approximately fifty percent." Lily's stomach tightened. Half her power. Gone forever. The vampire waited. Patient. Certain. Because he knew something she was beginning to realize herself. Power had brought her nothing but suffering. People hunted her because of it. Manipulated her because of it. Killed for it. Maybe half was enough. Maybe less was better. Maybe she was tired of being the strongest blood source on Earth. The vampire held out the vial. "No pressure." Liar. Lily stared at the liquid. Then slowly reached out. The glass felt ice cold. "Tell Caspian something." The vampire inclined his head. "What?" Lily's voice hardened. "I'm not doing this for him." For the first time, the vampire looked amused. "Of course not." — The serum tasted awful. Like metal and old wine. Lily nearly threw up. For several seconds nothing happened. Then warmth spread through her veins. Her skin tingled. The burning mark on her neck faded. And suddenly— The world felt quieter. Different. Smaller. The constant awareness of her blood vanished. For the first time in weeks, she felt almost normal. Almost. The realization hurt more than expected. — Back at the hotel, nobody seemed suspicious. At first. Marcus sat near the window reading maps. Jace occupied an armchair while pretending not to be recovering from multiple near-fatal injuries. A typical evening. Marcus looked up as she entered. Immediately his expression changed. Not dramatically. Just enough. The Alpha noticed something. Of course he did. His nostrils flared slightly. Then again. Confusion appeared. "Lily." Uh-oh. "What?" He stood. Slowly. Predatory. Dangerous. Moving closer. Lily resisted the urge to back away. Marcus stopped directly in front of her. His eyes narrowed. Then narrowed further. "What happened?" Every alarm in her body went off. "What do you mean?" "I can't smell you." Silence. Jace looked up immediately. Marcus's voice became colder. "Your blood." Lily's heartbeat accelerated. "Maybe you're getting a cold." Marcus stared. She instantly regretted saying it. Because Alpha werewolves apparently did not get colds. Good job, Lily. A+ lying skills. Marcus leaned closer. Too close. His scent surrounded her. Pine. Smoke. Danger. Confusion. The confusion bothered her most. "Tell me the truth." For a moment she almost did. Almost. Then she remembered the serum. The choice. The consequences. "No idea." Marcus kept staring. The silence stretched painfully. Finally Lily shrugged. "Maybe I'm stressed." Nothing. "Scared people have weird reactions, right?" Still nothing. Then she improvised desperately. "Maybe fear constricts blood flow or something." That sounded medically ridiculous. Marcus knew it. She knew it. Even Jace looked embarrassed for her. The Alpha studied her face for several long seconds. Searching. Judging. Trying to decide whether to push harder. Finally he stepped back. The silence felt worse than anger. Because Marcus didn't believe her. Not even a little. But he let it go. For now. "I see." The words carried enough disappointment to make her stomach hurt. Then he returned to the window. Conversation over. Trust damaged. Lily suddenly wished he'd yelled instead. — Hours later she couldn't sleep. The hotel creaked softly around her. Rain tapped against the glass. The city beyond remained awake. Watching. Waiting. Nocturne Falls never truly slept. Neither did her conscience. A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts. Three taps. Pause. One tap. Jace. Only Jace knocked like he was participating in a spy movie. Lily opened the door. The Rogue immediately stepped inside. His expression was grim. Serious. Not sarcastic. Not teasing. Which was unusual enough to be alarming. "What happened?" Jace locked the door. Then turned toward her. "The tattoo." Every muscle in her body tightened. "What?" "The one on your neck." Silence. Jace's silver eyes never left hers. "It glowed." Lily's pulse spiked. "When?" "Tonight." Her stomach dropped. Jace folded his arms. "I saw it." The room suddenly felt much smaller. Much warmer. Much more dangerous. "You met someone." Not a question. A statement. Lily said nothing. Jace's expression darkened. "Who?" Still silence. Outside, thunder rolled across the city. The Rogue took a step forward. "Lily." She looked away. Bad move. Because that alone answered half the question. Realization crossed his face. Then anger. Real anger. "You actually did it." The accusation hit hard. "You contacted them." Silence. Jace swore. Quietly. Violently. Then he moved toward the window. Pulled the curtain aside. And froze. For a second Lily didn't understand why. Then she followed his gaze. And her blood turned to ice. Outside the hotel, dozens of tiny red lights appeared in the darkness. Laser sights. Hundreds of them. Covering every window. Every entrance. Every escape route. The building had been surrounded. Jace's jaw tightened. His voice came out low and furious. "You brought them here." Lily clenched her fists. And didn't deny it.
