Chapter 4

Kael sat in his private study, amber eyes fixed on the moonlight spilling across the dark wood floor. His fingers drummed lightly against the desk, a slow, impatient rhythm, wolf coiling low beneath his skin. The bond to Aria throbbed in his chest, sharp, insistent, pulling him to her even when his mind screamed he needed control. Mine. Always. The first night after their claiming replayed in his mind—every glance, every touch, every heated spark between them. He had been careful, restrained, but the raw energy of the bond had pushed him further than he anticipated. His chest tightened at the memory of her warmth, her pulse pressing against his, the way her green eyes had widened at the first brush of possessive dominance. Mine. Protect fully. He exhaled slowly, jaw tightening, wolf vibrating beneath his skin. The pull was relentless, magnetic, uncontrollable. His wolf urged action, claiming, closeness, connection—but Kael forced himself to resist. He had to maintain control, or he would lose everything in the heat of desire. Not yet. Not here. Not like this. Kael leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowing. He could feel her presence across the Alpha House, subtle but undeniable, heartbeat threading through the bond, soft and questioning. She was confused, vulnerable, a delicate balance of strength and fragility that made him ache with possessive protectiveness. A low growl vibrated in his chest, wolf urging him closer, insisting on dominance, insisting she be reassured, claimed in the way only a true mate could be. Kael clenched his fists, slow-burn heat coiling, resisting the magnetic pull that whispered of touch, of closeness, of raw intimacy. He thought of her small hand brushing against his arm earlier, hesitant yet deliberate. The soft tremor of heat, the racing pulse beneath his fingers—his wolf had almost surged, nearly taking over in instinctual dominance. But Kael had held back, reminding himself that claim went beyond physicality. It was protection, guidance, patience. His amber eyes shifted to the window, watching the trees sway in the night wind. Rogue incidents, the pack’s looming responsibilities, his mother’s scheming—they all pressed against him like shadows. Yet the strongest pull, the one he couldn’t deny, was Aria herself. Her body, her mind, her wolf, intertwined with his. The thought made his jaw tighten and his pulse quicken. Kael rose and walked slowly through the Alpha House, each step deliberate, senses alert. Every shadow, every movement, every creak of the floor drew his attention—but always, beneath the predator’s vigilance, was the pull of her bond. The faint whisper of her wolf against his, the heartbeat echoing in sync with his own, threaded tension through his chest. He paused in the hallway, remembering her hesitant smile that morning, the way her hair had fallen over her shoulders, catching the light just so. A pang of regret sliced through him. He wished he could erase her confusion, her uncertainty, replace it with only safety, dominance, and reassurance. A subtle shift in the air alerted him—her presence close, perhaps in the common room, perhaps elsewhere, but near enough that his wolf vibrated with keen awareness. He wanted to stride forward, sweep her into his arms, remind her who claimed her. But restraint won. The bond pulsed insistently, low and demanding. He exhaled, letting his wolf settle, coiling protectively yet respectfully. Kael’s fingers brushed against the banister, slow-burn heat threading through his muscles, tension pressing low, magnetic and firm. Thoughts of their earlier night—the closeness, the spark, the teasing tension—surfaced again. His body reacted instantly, wolf roaring beneath his skin, insistence and dominance entwining with desire. Yet he held back, knowing that claiming a mate fully required more than lust. He murmured softly, voice low, vibrating through the bond even if she couldn’t hear it directly: “I will not lose control… not now. Not until you are ready. The words were both promise and warning, protective and possessive, threading slow-burn heat into every nerve, coiling low beneath restraint. Kael sank into the nearest chair, eyes softening but intensity still simmering. He could feel her confusion, the quiet pulse of uncertainty, and his wolf urged reassurance, dominance, closeness. He clenched his jaw again, slow-burn tension pressing, and whispered to the bond: Patience, Kael. Outside, the wind stirred the leaves, moonlight brushing against the trees, echoing the silent rhythm of the bond that tied them, magnetic and unbreakable. Kael’s heart hammered, slow-burn heat coiling beneath his skin, wolf vibrating, pulse aligned with hers. The night stretched long, but Kael remained vigilant—alpha, protector, mate. Denial was temporary, control necessary, but the pull of her bond was eternal. And when the time came, he would claim her in every way, magnetic, feral, unyielding The Alpha House loomed like a living thing—stone and steel fused with old magic, its walls humming with power that made my skin prickle. I stood at the iron gates, fingers clenched into the thin fabric of my dress, heart pounding so hard I was sure every wolf nearby could hear it. This was not my world. And yet… my body betrayed me. The moment I stepped onto the grounds, something inside me pulled—hard. Sharp. Like an invisible cord yanking me forward. My chest tightened, breath stuttering as heat curled low in my stomach, slow and dangerous. Mate, a whisper brushed my thoughts, soft and terrified. I flinched. No. I wasn’t ready for that word. Not ready for what it meant. Not ready for him. Guards lined the path—huge, broad-shouldered wolves in human form, their eyes sharp and assessing. None touched me, but their presence boxed me in, guiding me forward without a word. Every step closer made the pressure worse. By the time the massive doors opened, my legs were trembling. The inside of the Alpha House was warm, lit by amber lights and the scent of cedar, leather, and something darker—male, dominant, intoxicating. My lungs filled with it, and my knees nearly buckled. He’s here. I didn’t need anyone to say it.Then I felt him. It slammed into me like a wave—raw power, iron control, and something feral barely leashed. My wolf—one I didn’t even know I had—curled inward, shivering, aching. Him. Him. Him. I looked up. Kael stood at the top of the stairs, arms crossed over his chest, dark shirt stretched over muscle, posture relaxed—but his eyes… his eyes were burning. Amber. Predatory. Locked on me. My breath caught painfully. This was the most dangerous Alpha in Black Fang Park. And my body wanted him. His gaze dragged over me slowly, unashamed, assessing. I felt stripped bare under it—my fear, my weakness, my unwanted longing exposed. “You brought her,” he said, voice low, controlled, vibrating through the hall. “Yes, Alpha,” one guard replied, bowing his head. Kael descended the stairs with unhurried steps, every movement radiating authority. The closer he got, the harder it became to breathe. Heat coiled tight between my thighs, mortifying and uncontrollable. I hated my body for it. He stopped an arm’s length away. Too close. The air crackled between us. “So,” he said quietly, eyes never leaving mine, “you’re the one.” My throat went dry. “I—I don’t know what you mean.” His lip twitched—not a smile. Something sharper. “Oh, you do,” he murmured. “Your scent gave you away the moment you crossed my border.” My cheeks burned. “I didn’t come here on purpose.” “I know.” His voice dropped. “That’s the problem.” His gaze flicked briefly to my neck, then lower, and my pulse spiked. My wolf whimpered, pressing against my ribs, aching to reach for him. Mine, something inside me whispered—terrified and awed. Kael inhaled slowly, jaw tightening, like he was restraining something violent inside himself. “You’re staying,” he said. It wasn’t a question. My heart skipped. “Staying… where?” “Here.” His eyes hardened. “Under my roof. Until I decide what to do with you.” Fear surged. “I didn’t do anything wrong.” “I know.” His voice softened just a fraction—and somehow that was worse. “But you are my responsibility now.” My knees nearly gave out. He turned sharply. “Beta.” A man stepped forward—tall, calm-eyed, his presence steadier than the others. “Yes, Alpha?” “Show her to the east wing,” Kael ordered. “Guarded. Comfortable. No one touches her.” His eyes flicked back to me. “Especially not me.” That last part was almost… strained. Almost human. As the Beta guided me away, I felt it—the invisible pull stretching tight between us, humming, alive. I glanced back once. Kael was still watching me. His expression was carved from stone, but his wolf—his wolf—pressed against my mind, hot and possessive. Mine, it growled. I shivered. Because deep down, beneath my fear, beneath my denial, something answered. Yours
