Return of a King

Chapter 2: First Town

A loud sound, that seems to be a rock that was on the road, awoke me from my sleep, I then sat properly and glanced through the carriage and then saw that we were still traveling.

“Where are we?” I asked the coachman, he was someone who passed by the road where I was walking. I paid him Ten copper coins to transport me to the nearest town. He looks familiar, not gonna lie.

“We’re nearing a town right now, but it’ll be afternoon until we reach it” said the coachman with a stern voice.

“Okay, thanks” I said, and then opened the cover in the back to let the sun light come in and let me get exposed to its warmth. As we made our way to the town, a pack of slimes emerged from the forest and the horses stopped from its tracks as its instinct kicked in that every monster is dangerous.

I stepped down from the carriage and took my sword even if I’m still not good at handling it. I took a battle stance and prepared to attack the pack of slimes that appeared out of the forest.

“Hey, lad, be careful now” the coachman said as a warning.

“Don’t worry, I know how to kill a monster” I replied, even back then in my past life I could defeat Ents. An Ent is equivalent to a C-rank adventurer, that means I’m stronger than a pack of slimes.

I went near the slimes and the pack of slimes noticed me and they started to come at me one by one, I swung my sword towards the one who attacked me first. But I left one small, or maybe big, detail…my body is not yet suited to hold a sword.

I only started to use the sword when I trained to become a knight for the kingdom. Crap, I remember why I became a knight, someone roped me into it and I just went with the flow because I thought it was cool. Now I regret that choice, anyway, when I swung my sword, it missed the slime.

The slime jumped towards to incur damage to me and I tried to block it by hurling my arm towards it and then at that moment I discovered something, the slime that got hit by my fist died and left its core.

A core is the most important part of a monster, it sells the most and if you take it out from a monster’s body the monster will die immediately but it’s hard to achieve since it’s very deep inside a monster’s body.

I stood there and marveled at the event that just happened, I just discovered of a way to fight. No one has ever done that, everyone uses weapons and magic to fight yet they don’t take into account their fists, if we just apply a certain amount of force just like how we do with weapons we can inflict damage to our enemies.

Why did this kingdom not think of this? I guess we aren’t that advanced.

“Heads up, you weakling!” someone shouted at me from the back, I quickly picked up my sword that fell when I blocked that slime and dodged to my right side and a girl then emerged from behind and quickly ran into the pack of the slimes and swiftly killed them by using a rapier to reach into the slime’s core.

 After the action that she took, she then walked away leaving all the core that was left from her onslaught. I took all the cores and went to the carriage and asked the coachman; “Who was that?”

“I don’t know, young lad. I just got here like you” he replied, tch, this old man is messing with me. I can’t really argue with him though, we both just got here. I wonder who that was, I didn’t get to see her face.

Anyway, let’s just go to the town.

We proceeded to make our trail towards the town with no more disturbances like monsters. It was afternoon when we reached the gate of the town, I jumped off of the carriage with my bag and proceeded to go to the guards.

“Hey, you! Come here, we need to verify if you’re not a criminal” the guard said, oh yeah, this is what I’m talking about. One of the guards then put a white crystal ball in the table.

“Put your hand on top of the ball, if the ball shines blue then you’re safe, but if it shines red then brother you better rethink and regret your life decisions” the guard said as an instruction with a very straight face, I can’t figure out if he’s joking or not but he just threatened me, didn’t he?

Anyway, I put my hands on top of it and waited, the ball then shone blue so I made it pass the guards. I then went to the towns bulletin board to see where the adventurer’s guild is because I’ve never been to a guild before. It’s weird that we have bulletin boards but no one knows what martial arts is…wait, what’s martial arts? Why did I suddenly think of that?

It’s such a mystery that I suddenly thought of such word, maybe it’s part of why I was reborn…ahh, my head hurts from thinking all of this.

After I learned where the guild is, I then went to where it is located. I entered the guild hall and went straight to the reception desk.

“Hi, I would like to register myself as an adventurer” I said to the receptionist sitting across the desk.

“Okay, please wait...” she then took a piece of paper and held it out to me “Please answer this form”

I took the form, read it, and then answered it. I then gave it to the receptionist and waited for her since she entered the room next door. After quite a while, she then got out of the room with a card on her hand. She gave me the card and said;

“This will be your adventurer card”

“Thanks, by the way, can I sell this slime core I have here?” I said and took out the five cores in my bag and put it on top of the desk.

“Of course, these five slime cores amounts to three silver and seventy five copper coins” said the receptionist, she then took the said amount from the register and took the cores, I then took my pay.

I’ll just go and get a quest tomorrow, for now I need to find an inn.

I went around the town to find an inn and I eventually found one. I went inside and checked in for five nights, after I got my keys to a room I crashed in the bed and the thought of being reborn still bugged me until I fell asleep.
