Chapter 2-I don't want to lose you

1550 Words
My body started shaking as I looked at him . I couldn’t tell what expression he had because my eyes were full of tears. “What does this mean?” I asked, still shocked. How did everything go wrong? We were happy before. He respected me, and I respected him. I even loved him… so how could he do this to me? “It means exactly what is written on the paper, Sarah,” he said. “And what does it say?” I asked, refusing to accept it. I didn’t want to believe it until I heard him say it himself. Part of me still wanted to hold on and save our marriage. But then he said the words I was afraid of: “I want a divorce, Sarah." I don’t even know how to explain what I was feeling. One moment, I was happy… like everything in my life finally made sense. And then suddenly, it was all gone. It felt like I was pushed from the sky and left to crash hard on the ground, not knowing what I did wrong. My chest felt tight, like I couldn’t breathe properly. My thoughts were messy, and nothing made sense anymore. If this was really how things were going to end, then I needed to know why. I deserved at least that much. I deserved the truth. “W-Why?” I asked, my voice shaking so badly I almost couldn’t hear myself. Tears kept falling down my face, but I quickly wiped them away with my hands. I didn’t want anyone to see me like this...weak, broken, falling apart. I promised myself I would never cry in front of others. But right now, I could barely hold it in. I felt like I was about to break completely. Like one more word, one more second, and I would lose control. And yet, what hurt the most was seeing my husband Zeus standing there, calm and unaffected and as if none of this mattered to him. As if I didn’t matter. He was the reason I was hurting like this, and yet he looked perfectly fine. Zeus just shrugged his shoulders, like this was nothing serious. “Do I really need a reason to file for a divorce?” he said so casually, like he was just talking about something normal. His words hit me harder than anything else. My hands slowly turned into fists under the table, gripping so tightly that my nails dug into my skin. I was trying so hard to stay still, to stay in control… because if I didn’t, I knew I would do something I might regret. If I had let go, even for a second,I would have stood up and slapped him across the face. But even that wouldn’t be enough to ease the pain inside me. Because no matter what I did… it wouldn’t change the fact that the man I loved was choosing to walk away. “You better have a real reason if you expect me to sign those papers,” I said coldly. Not that I was planning to agree anyway. He leaned back like he didn’t care at all, letting out an annoyed sigh. “You want a reason? Fine. You’re lazy. You can’t even keep the house in order. Every time I come home, it’s a mess. Clothes everywhere, things out of place. It’s exhausting just looking at it.” My jaw tightened, my hands curling into fists. “That’s not true. I’ve been busy working too. You think I have all the time in the world? You live there too—why can’t you clean up your own mess?” He let out a short, mocking laugh. “So now you’re making excuses? That’s exactly the problem. You always have one. You never take responsibility for anything.” Each word felt like a slap. “Then why did you marry me?” I shot back, my voice shaking with anger. “Did I ever force you? No. You were the one who kept pushing for it. So why am I suddenly the problem now?” His expression turned cold, almost cruel. “Because I made a mistake,” he said flatly. “I didn’t realize how useless you’d turn out to be.” The room felt like it spun for a second. “I tried to be patient,” he continued, his tone sharp. “But honestly? Being with you feels like a burden.” I swallowed hard, my chest tightening painfully. “And now,” he added without hesitation, “I’m done pretending this marriage is worth saving.” I’m not done yet,” he said. “Let me finish.” “Enough,” I cut in sharply. “I’ve heard more than enough.” “Wait,” he said with a smirk. “This one’s the best part. Listen carefully.” He paused for a moment before adding, “The main reason I want this divorce? It’s because of this. You’re so boring in bed.” His words hit me hard, like a knife to the chest. A short, bitter laugh escaped my lips as memories flashed in my mind ,times when he told me he loved me, times when he held me close and kissed me gently. I felt so foolish for ever believing those moments were real. A slow smile formed on my lips, but it wasn’t happiness. “Oh really?” I said, my voice cold. “Are you sure I’m the problem? Because last time I checked you were the one who couldn’t even do your part.” Zeus slammed his fist on the table, his face full of anger. “Hey!” “What?!” I shot back loudly, not caring if people were starting to stare. “You think you’re the only one allowed to say hurtful things? You hurt me first so don’t expect me to stay quiet.” I slammed the papers down in front of him. “I’m not signing anything. Not now. Not ever.” I pushed my chair back, ready to leave, but he suddenly grabbed my wrist, holding me in place. “Oh no, you don’t,” he snapped. “You’re not walking away from this. Why are you being so difficult? Just sign it already!” I yanked my hand away, my chest rising and falling fast. “Because this isn’t just paper, Zeus! This is my life you’re throwing away!” He scoffed, dragging a hand through his hair. “You’re unbelievable,” he muttered before looking straight at me, his eyes cold. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing? You’re ruining everything for me.” I let out a shaky laugh, my eyes burning with tears. “Ruining your life?” I said, my voice cracking. “You’re the one who wants to leave, and somehow I’m the problem?” “Yes!” he shot back without hesitation. “Because you won’t let go when it’s already over!” “Can you two keep it down or take it outside?!” someone nearby shouted, clearly annoyed. “Yeah, seriously!” another voice added. “You’re making a scene!” “And miss,” a woman called out, her tone softer but firm, “Why are you still holding on? You deserve better than that man.” “That’s right,” someone else agreed. “Don’t beg for someone who clearly doesn’t want you.” Their words hit me all at once. I quickly wiped my tears, lowering my head as shame and pain mixed inside me. “I’m… I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice barely steady. “I didn’t mean to disturb everyone.” I’m truly sorry for causing a scene and disturbing all of you,” I said quietly, my voice barely holding together. Without waiting for anything else, I rushed out of the café, my vision blurred as I waved down the first taxi I saw. I got in quickly and told the driver to take me home. What a painful way to remember our first anniversary. And to think… I had even prepared a gift for him. The thought made my chest tighten. Anger and heartbreak mixed inside me until I couldn’t take it anymore. I pulled out the small paper bag beside me and threw it out the open window, watching it disappear as my tears silently fell. I didn’t stop crying the entire ride. When I finally arrived, I paid the driver and slowly stepped out, my body feeling heavy as I dragged myself toward the gate. Every step felt harder than the last. Memories began to flood my mind—our first day in this house, the smiles, the laughter. I tried to push them away, but they kept coming back no matter how hard I fought it. I had given so much of my life to him. Every place I went, every little thing I owned… somehow, it all reminded me of him. And that was the hardest part. Accepting that the man I loved had been pulling away from me all along. Accepting that, to him, I was never enough. But even more painful than that was knowing I now had to learn how to live without him.
