“Drop me off at the school afterwards” was all Maddie said before exiting the car at the courthouse. She walked in to find Jason standing by a vending machine. “Let’s get this over with” she stated bluntly, crossing her arms. Jason dropped his coin in surprise, and bent down to pick it up. “Don’t mind it” Maddie said flatly “ your family will have all my fathers money soon” she said turning on her heel and walked up to the counter. “I’m here to sign a marriage certificate, Maddie Capone?” She said, with absolutely no hint of excitement in her voice. The lady looked her up and down, she was definitely finding her attire and attitude odd, but Maddie didn’t care. Jason came up to her “Maddie it’s not like that” he said, trying to put a hand on her shoulder. “Like I told you last time, I don’t care” she said through gritted teeth pulling her shoulder away from his hand. Then she felt the hairs at the back of her neck rise. Yep Richard was definitely right behind her. As the lady placed the paper on the counter, Maddie signed it quickly and turned to walk away not even looking at the two men, and before the lady had stamped the certificate. As she got back in her fathers car, Jason stopped her from closing the door. “What!! I did it, didn’t I?? What more could you possibly want from me?” Maddie hissed snapping her head back to look at him. “You forgot this” he said handing her a little black box. “I don’t want it” Maddie huffed. “He doesn’t care” Jason responded with a hint of softness in his voice. “Then why should I” she said, slamming the door in Jason’s face. “You can’t do stuff like this sweetie” her dad finally spoke as they drove off. “You told me to stay as far away as possible from this guy, and now you are marrying me off to him? you lost the right to tell me what to do, I’m a Married woman now.. remember!” She hissed tugging the strings on her hoodie to hide her face as she glanced out the window. Maddie was dropped off at school to get her car 20 minutes before Alison’s last class ended, and Maddie decided to wait for her and ask, if she wanted to go to Uncle Vinny’s, she didn’t want to go home. As she stood there leaning against the car, a black SUV pulled into the parking lot. Maddie cursed as Jason stepped out of it, who did he think he was chasing her all the way to school!! She stalked up to him angrily and poked him in the chest as she yelled “you have no right to follow me here, I am a grown woman and I will be dammed if I’m gonna let him run my life, so you tell that Bastard that he can shove his box up where the sun don’t shine!!” Making Jason raise an eyebrow at her. “I wasn’t” he said looking highly amused. Just then Alison exited the front doors of the collage and ran towards them. “Hi” she said, giving Jason a kiss before turning to Maddie. “I’m sorry you waited Maddie, me and Jason have plans but you are welcome to tag along?” Alison asked cheerfully, putting her book bag into Jason car. Maddie looked at Jason who was outright smiling at this point. “I was gonna ask you to go to Vinny’s with me” Maddie said dejected. “Would that be okay?” Alison asked Jason pouting her lips and giving him puppy dog eyes. Jaso nodded and proceeded to take her bag back out of his car and putting it in Maddie’s. Maddie smiled tauntingly at Jason, but to her horror Alison kissed him and said “I’ll text you the address, and we’ll meet you there okay?” Maddie’s smile instantly faltered. FML!! As they arrived at Uncle Vinny’s they were greeted with hugs and kisses. Maddie had driven like a mad man, shaking Jason off half way as a final f**k you. He could find his own damn way there Maddie internally scoffed. Uncle Vinny seated them and Alison informed him that they would be needing a third menu as she blushed. “Oh how you girls grow up” Uncle Vinny had said dramatically, then looking questioning at Maddie as he asked “and you are the third wheel?” Just then Jason entered the restaurant, but to Maddie’s horror, he wasn’t alone. Richard was walking behind him.. was he wearing a suit? Maddie tried to think back to the courthouse, she hadn’t looked at him at all, so he might have been wearing it then too. It was a tailored grey suit, white shirt and silver cufflinks. It made him look nice, although Maddie would never admit it. Jason sat down next to Alison, and Richard took his seat next to Maddie. “Guess we will be needing four menu’s then” Uncle Vinny said, a bit baffled at the sight of the two large men before him. The difference in statue between the two men and Uncle Vinny was absolutely comical. He was having to look up at them, even with them being seated. He scurried behind the bar and then arrived shortly after with 4 menus in hand. Uncle Vinny eyed Richard intently and then Jason before straightening his back and in a stern voice said to the two men “ I hope you’ll treat my girls right, Maddie is everything I have left of my dear sister, and Alison is part of our family, so if you don’t have honorable intentions, I hope you will leave these wonderful girls be” Maddie was about to tell him how he had mistaken the situation and that they weren’t on a date when Richard cut her off “I promise my intentions are as honorable as they come, anything your niece could ever want or need, I am more than able and willing to provide her” Maddie was speechless, in fact the entire table had gone quiet. Uncle Vinny on the other hand, looked satisfied with this answer and turned his gaze to Jason “and you?” He asked him. “Uhmm Alison is very dear to my heart, and I have no intention of ever hurting her” he hurried out, making Alison blush and Uncle Vinny hum in satisfaction. “I’m glad we are all on the same page” the little stout man said, before turning back towards the bar. “Wow you really laid it on thick there Richard” Alison nervously chuckled, trying to break the silence, but it did not have the desired effect. The table was dead quiet. “Sooo what did you do today, anything interesting?” Alison then asked Jason, hoping to get some kind of conversation going and loose this awkward silence. “I uhm.. I..” Jason started but got cut off by Richard voice “He saw me get married” “Oh” Alison said “I didn’t even know you were engaged” looking like a dear caught in headlights. “I wasn’t” Richard said, looking down at the menu showing no intention of wanting to elaborate. Maddie had turned a ghostly white, she had definitely felt her heart stop. Why would he out the whole thing to Alison like that??? “Oh.. okay.. we’ll congratulations then, she must be an amazing woman” Alison continued. “She is” richard responded, putting his hand on Maddie’s thigh. Maddie was in fight or flight mode, and right now.. flight was winning, she placed her hand on his to remove it, but then she felt something, he had a ring on his finger.. a wedding band??!?! She removed her hand like she had touched fire, banging it on the underside of the table. What the hell was he playing at? This wasn’t real, they might be technically married, but they sure as hell weren’t a couple! As Maddie’s mind was going a mile a minute, her attention was caught as Richard leisurely placed the little black box in front of her. WTF!!! Maddie was panicking, she looked at Richard who’s expression was unreadable, then Jason who looked apologetic, and lastly Alison who was now starring at Maddie in sheer confusion. “I..uhmm..” Maddie started but there was no way she knew how to finish the sentence. “Open it” Richard said, drawing Maddie’s attention back to the box in front of her. Maddie gulped, she really didn’t want to know what it was. What she did want, was for all of this to go away. Richard sighed, and opened the box for her. It was a beautiful ring, a big diamond was placed in the center and smaller ones circled the silver band. “I..” Maddie was speechless, and in one swift motion he took her hand and placed it on her finger. “There, are you done being difficult?” He said, turning back to Alison who was now sitting, mouth gaping looking at Maddie’s hand. “We fell in love and got married” he said with finality, as if that would somehow make it make sense. Maddie wanted to run, far far away from there, or maybe just die of a heart attack?? Yes, anything to get away from this. “How..when..?” Alison asked, still starring at the ring, and not believing her own eyes one bit. “I’m working with her father, it just happened” he said in a monotone voice. Maddie needed to say something, but what??!? Should she say, surprise! April fools!, no it wouldn’t do in the middle of September. Maddie cleared her throat and repeated after Richard “he works with my dad, it just happened?” It was the same words, but here’s came out more as a question then a statement. “I can’t believe it, why didn’t you tell me” Alison said, now looking at Maddie in disbelief. “I uhm, I guess you weren’t the only one with secrets” Maddie almost whispered. “She didn’t know we were getting married today, I sprung it on her” Richard elaborated, sounding irritated that the conversation wasn’t over yet. Alison sat back stunned.
