I asked before I could stop myself if she went to church. To my surprise, Maggie Skugge was raised in the church. Her voice softened. “My parents were prominent members too. My father was a senior pastor; my mother led the women’s ministry and the entire outreach program. My sister and I were expected to follow that path. But I never felt like I belonged there.” She paused. “And when I met Kayde’s father, he gave me the courage to live the life I wanted.
