Anna and Ben were stunned and terrified. They recognized the man who was sitting on the chair. He was their boss, the head of the agency. He was "J.D."
They couldn't believe that their boss was the killer, and that he had been playing with them all along. They wondered why he had done it, and what he wanted from them.
Their boss smiled and said: "Don't look so surprised, my dear detectives. You should have known that I was always one step ahead of you. You should have listened to me when I told you to drop the case. But you were too stubborn and curious, and you had to dig deeper. Well, now you have found me. Congratulations."
He stood up and walked towards them. He said: "You see, I had a very good reason to kill the businessman and Julia Davis. They were both my enemies, and they had something that I wanted. Something very valuable and powerful. Something that could change the world."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small device. He said: "This is what I wanted. This is what they had. This is a prototype of a quantum computer, capable of breaking any encryption and hacking any system. It was developed by a secret organization that I used to work for, before I betrayed them and joined your agency. I was sent to infiltrate your agency and steal the device, but the businessman and Julia Davis got in my way. They were also agents of the organization, and they tried to stop me. So I had to eliminate them."
He said: "But I couldn't do it alone. I needed someone to help me. Someone who could access the hotel records, the security cameras, the phone records, and the autopsy reports. Someone who could manipulate the evidence and mislead the investigation. Someone who could be my eyes and ears inside the agency. Someone like you."
He pointed at Anna and Ben and said: "Yes, you were my accomplices, without even knowing it. You were my puppets, and I was your master. You did everything I wanted you to do, and you gave me everything I needed to know. You were the perfect partners for me."
He laughed and said: "But now, our partnership is over. You have served your purpose, and you have become a liability. You know too much, and you can't be trusted. You have to die."
He raised his hand and pressed a button on the device.
The room exploded.
