CHAPTER 8
ELENA'S POV
LEAVING THE PAST BEHIND
My eyes widened in surprise as I watched Beatrice holding a necklace. It was the most beautiful piece of Jewelry I had ever seen.
She came closer to me smiling. "Here I want you to have this."
"This is beautiful. Thank you," I replied as I smiled back at her. I stretched my hands and she gave me the necklace which I wore around my neck and she helped me to fasten it.
"It was a gift from someone special and now that you're here, you can have it," Beatrice said.
I touched the necklace, feeling happy that she had found me worthy of such a wonderful gift. Tears slipped down my face. No one had ever found it worthy to give me something special. Not even my parents.
My mind flashed back to when I celebrated my sixteenth birthday. Unlike others who get to receive gifts from their loved ones, mine was different. No love, no care and worst still, no gift to make me feel special. My father felt it was no use caring for a wolfless child. To him, I was nothing. He told me that my entire existence is a waste of space and that it would be better if I was torn to pieces by rogues.
It was a painful and humiliating experience for me. My mother, like always, was silent and would always turn a blind eye to my plight. My heart bleeds from all that I was made to suffer in their hands.
Beatrice tapped me gently, drawing my attention back to reality. "Elena, you seemed lost in thought. Did I say something wrong?"
I blinked away the tears threatening to flow and shaked my head in denial. "No Beatrice. I was just thinking of the past. You did nothing wrong."
Beatrice's eyes softened with concern as she gazed at me. "I understand that you're hurt from the betrayal you went through. You need to put all of it in the past for a much better future. The past should remain where it belongs, in the past."
I was overwhelmed with sadness which made me wrap my arms around Beatrice in a tight hug. My chest heaved and I burst into uncontrollable tears. I keep trying hard to push the sadness away but it seemed like the more I tried, the harder it became.
"You should stop crying, Elena," she consoled me as she rubbed my back gently.
I pulled back from the hug and looked into her eyes. "Do you think I don't deserve to be happy?"
Beatrice looked at me in disbelief. "Such nonsense! You deserve to be happy. Stop being negative," she chided.
I sighed deeply. She is right, I need to put everything behind me for a fresh start. After spending some time together.
The cool gentle breeze caressed my face. It was starting to get dark. I had lost track of time to notice while speaking with Beatrice.
Beatrice looked around, few people walked past us as they hurried to get to their destination. "We need to head back. It's getting late and I need to prepare dinner.
I was happy within me because I had found a special friend, Beatrice. Which means a lot to me. "I will join you to prepare dinner," I said happily.
Beatrice looked at me. "Are you sure about that? Listen, you can rest while I prepare dinner because I do not want you to be stressed out."
I rolled my eyes. "There is nothing difficult about preparing dinner. Let me help you," I insisted.
"Fine, let's go home," she said.
Home? That word made me smile and giddy with joy. Finally, I have found a place to call home.
We got up and headed back to Beatrice's house. When we arrived, we started making preparations for dinner. The delicious aroma filled the kitchen. In no time, dinner was ready and I laid the dishes on the small dining table which contained only four chairs.
As I was about to settle on one of the chairs, the doorbell rang. "Are we expecting anyone," I asked in surprise.
Beatrice had a surprised expression on her face. "No, please get the door," she said.
I got up from the chair and pushed it back. Then I walked towards the door and opened it. My heart skipped a beat as I stood rooted to the spot in shock.
"Hello, Elena," Liam greeted as his lips curled up in a smile.
"L...Liam."
"Surprised to see me, huh," he drew closer and I could feel his warm breath on my face. "Aren't you going to let me in?"
I quickly regained my composure and I opened the door wide. Without saying a word, I walked away leaving him standing in the doorway.
I knew I was overreacting but at this point, I cared less. My mind is already made up because I have made a decision to remain mateless.
The last thing I want is another heartbreak.
"Who was that?," Beatrice asked as looked at me. Her eyes squinted when she noticed my sudden change of mood.
"It's Liam," just then, Liam strode into the dining room. And Beatrice's eyes softened when she saw him.
"Just in time, Liam. Join us for dinner and don't say no," Beatrice said.
I sat down and started eating without saying a word. I could feel Liam's eyes on me.
He sat close to me and I felt like moving away from him. Beatrice passed his food to him and he started eating. He closed his eyes as he savoured the delicious taste. "This tastes divine. You're such a good cook," he said, referring to Beatrice who smiled cheerfully.
"It's all Elena's effort. She made this delicious meal," Beatrice replied.
I almost choked on my food when she said that. I started coughing and Liam quickly passed me a glass of water which I gulped down.
"Thank you," I said as I dropped the glass on the table.
Liam's eyes ran through my body, There are more ways to thank me," he winked.
