"Holy cow! Haze is so hot, I just wish I could marry him!"
"Girl, look at Chester, he's the epitome of perfection!"
"What are you spouting about? Can't you see that Michaelis was the best of them all? And don't forget about the twins!"
"Hey, Hisashi! Hisashi!" Watanube Yoshi called out his bestfriend's name, trying to gain the other male's attention from spacing out. He waved his hand in front of his face, successfully cutting him off from his daze. Watanube flicked his forehead, chuckling. "You're such a creep, stop staring at her."
"Ugh, what's your problem?" Hisashi asked, deeply frowning as he tore his eyes away from his crush and looked at his friend who was sitting on top of the table next to him.
"Man, you're the problem here. I keep talking and talking about the my exciting weekend and here you are, ignoring me as you're too occupied staring at Hanamizu. Can't you just confess to her already and start going out?" Watanube complained, groaning as he pointed his pursed lips towards the mentioned beautiful girl across the noisy classroom.
Hisashi whined, dropping his head on his table, ears were still listening to the girls' conversation about a famous novel. "I've confessed to her, about eight times already, and I'm still rejected! Am I going to die alone?"
Hisashi Tadaomi, a sixteen-year old highschool student, is a simple and outgoing boy. He lived together with his loving family in a two-storey modern Japanese house. He have an older sister who's always getting on his nerves, they're not enemies but he hated the way how she teased him about his beauty. He doesn't want to admit it to himself, but he's really feminine. Black wavy hair that was combed once a month, thick and long eyelashes that batted every blink, deep obsidian eyes that held so much joy, natural pink lips, and smooth pale skin. He was sometimes mistaken as a short-haired girl and only to find out that he's a boy if he turns around to glare daggers at you.
Maybe that's the reason why his crush kept refusing to be his girlfriend, it's because he's prettier than her. Even though that's the case, or not, he never stop pursuing her. The entire school knows about it, and were cheering him up to do his best. Yet these past few days, Hanamizu Saiko and the rest of the girls were gossiping about a novel. To be honest, he's starting to get pissed on how she would talk about another man from that story. All of them were drooling over those fictional characters, and he's getting jealous.
Currently, it's break time. Hanamizu and her friends gathered up, taking out their smart phones to resume reading the novel online. Hisashi sat at the back of the classroom, next to the window, and was staring intensely at her from the distance. That's when Watanube came and began talking to him.
"My friend, you might be chasing the wrong gender. Who knows, maybe you're destined to a guy or something." The brown-haired boy, shrugging his shoulders as he shot him a sheepish smile.
Hisashi scrunched up his nose, – it's not like he's a homophobe – he really disliked the idea of having an intimate relationship with the same gender. He believed that boys should date girls, and girls should date boys. Just basic as that. Now thinking about it, he remembered that his older sister is a fujoshi who keeps pairing up men and saying that it's much more better than heterosexual relationships. "Oh, yeah? How does not letting you in of my house for a month sounds to you?"
"Hey, that's unfair!" Watanube widened his eyes in disbelief. "I love your mom's dishes, how could you?!"
"You're just an addition of plate to wash, I'm getting sick of being the house's dishwasher. Why not nee-chan do it instead?" The black-haired boy complained, pouting his lips as he raised his head, and continued to stare at his crush from afar.
"You're hopeless, you're too lazy." Watanube sighed, shaking his head in a pretend disappointment. When he saw Hisashi looking at the girls' direction again, he couldn't help it but to roll his eyes. He hit the back of the other boy's head, receiving a cry from him. "You're staring at her again. You know, she'll melt if you keep doing that."
"I know." Hisashi groaned, placing his chin on his left palm. He gave his bestfriend a side glance, letting out a tired huff. "Do you know the novel that they were talking about?"
Watanube's eyes lightened up upon hearing his question, eagerly nodding. "Yeah, it's really popular among women. I've heard that the male characters were fighting over a girl, you could say it's a harem."
"How did you even know that?" Hisashi furrowed his perfect eyebrows. The thought of him reading cringey romance novels brought shivers down his spine, just imagine Watanube's blushing and squealing face while reading it. Isn't it weird to see?
"I heard it from my smaller sister. She's addicted to it, too." He answered, grinning. "She also told me not to bother her everytime she's reading the novel. I couldn't play video games with her anymore. And do you even know how annoying it was to listen to her talk about some guy called Haze?!"
Hisashi eyed him as he rumbled about losing a lot of bonding time with his little sister. He never paid him attention when he observed Hanamizu again, a sudden idea came in his mind. He didn't know if it'll work, or even make him closer to his crush, but nothing's wrong if you try, right?
When the bell rang, Hisashi quickly gathered his things from his table and put it inside his bag. The day is over, and he's finally going back home. The math teacher, who was sitting on the teacher's table, bid them goodbye and left. Hisashi waved a hand to Watanube before sprinting out of the room, swiftly avoiding the students that scattered on the hallway. In a nick of time, he got out of the building and went straight to his bike. He removed the lock that's keeping it secured, and jumped on it. He rashly pedaled towards his house with sweat trickling down his face.
He have been thinking about his plan the whole time. He wanted Hanazumi to notice him, to acknowledge him and admire him. That's why for the sake of his love, he needs to read the novel that she really love with the hopes of getting her favor. Maybe if he knew the story, he can talk about it with her and create a bond between them. He couldn't miss to notice that Hanazumi looked dull whenever she talks about things other than the novel. And Hisashi was determined to do anything for her.
After a couple of minutes, he arrived in front of their house. He pushed open the tall gate and came in with his bike. He placed down his awesome bike at the corner of their frontyard and jogged towards their door. He went inside, removing his dirty shoes.
"I'm home!" He exclaimed, bending forward to pick up his pair of shoes and settled it on the side. He exhaled, massaging his temples due to his stressful day. He looked up when he heard heavy footsteps heading to his way, he could already say that it's his loving mother since she never failed to greet him home.
"Welcome home, honey!" His mother happily replied, giving him a bone-crushing hug. A huge smile unconsciously appeared on his face, enjoying her radiating warmth as he patted her back. She's the best mother of all, based on Hisashi's opinion. Because why not? She makes plenty of delicious food!
"Hi, mom. What's up?" He asked, softly pecking the top of her head as they broke the hug.
She giggled, small wringles showed up at the side of her twinkling eyes. She encircled her hand around his wrist, dragging him towards the kitchen. "I'm fine, I got to clean the entire house again. Your sister's room was really a mess. How about you, sweetheart? How's your day?"
"Nothing interesting happened, it's boring." He replied, sniffling the air and couldn't help but to mentally jump in happiness when he smelled his favorite dish. "You're making chicken curry?"
"Yes, that's why..." Her voice trailing off, letting go of his wrist before shooting him a bright grin. "Go upstairs and change. Help me prepare dinner."
Hisashi's smooth face crumpled, grumbling lowly. "Mom, why is it always me? Why can't you let nee-chan do anything? She's a complete sloth inside her room."
"Your sister is naturally like that, stop protesting. She's an adult, and her job was keeping her lock up because of her works' upcoming due dates. Besides, it's not like you hate helping me out in the kitchen. Admit it, you love doing household chores." She teased, wiggling her brows at him.
Well, Hisashi couldn't argue with her statement. All of her released words were one-hundred percent true. He loves his mom, and also loves lending her a hand whenever she needs him. You could say that they do have a strong and unbreakable bond, they get along too well. Not just his mother, but Hisashi got a nice relationship with the rest of the family. That's the reason why they're happy and contented with their lives, growing up in a supporting and warm environment got a toll on him. He grew up as friendly guy, his parents couldn't get any happier to see him get out of his shell and make tons of acquaintances.
He bobbed his head up and down, confirming what she had said and turned around. "I'll be back in a minute."
"It's fine, I'm not rushing you. Take your time, honey." She assured him, walking away as soon as he vanished from her sight.
Hisashi strode towards his room, closing the door behind him. He dropped his bag on the wooden floor and began stripping from his school uniform. He put them in his laundry basket, nearing his cabinet and took out a new set of comfortable clothes to wear. He settled himself with an oversized white shirt and boxers.
When he was finished, he got out of the room and stood in front of the door next to his. He knocked thrice, "Nee-chan, nee-chan. Are you there? Can I enter?"
"Come in." A woman's gruff voice responded, making him twist the knob and pushed open the door. "Oh, it's you, pretty younger brother. What makes you visit my humble territory?"
Hisashi deeply scowled upon hearing her. He squinted his eyes, not able to see clear in the eerily dark place. He cupped the wall beside him, searching for the light's switch. He pressed it, and sighed in relief when the room lit up. He loudly snickered when Rurumi, his older sister, shrieked in terror when she got hit by the light. She twirled her swivel chair towards his direction, and shot him a murderous glare.
"Are you a vampire, huh, nee-chan?" He asked, raising a brow. His black orbs roamed around her place, scanning the dumpster of a room with different kinds of trash scattered on the floor. Her table consisted of a laptop, bowl of chips, stack of papers, a can of rootbeer with a huge dent, and a case filled with pens.
Rurumi frowned, crossing her slender pale arms across her fairly huge chest. She wore a tight top, displaying her perfect curves, paired with a loose short stopping in the middle of her thick thighs. Her dark hair was tied up into a messy bun, bags were visible under her round eyes. With just the sight, you'd really notice how tired she was. "I'm not a vampire, but I could suck the life out of you if you turn on the lights again next time."
"With the looks of it, I think there's no more next time." Hisashi laughed, noting to himself not to anger the woman blessed with strong punches ever again. Trust him, he suffered under her ruthless wrath back then to the point that he bawled his eyes out to his mother. She has the power of five men combined.
"Why did you come here, though? Is there something wrong?" She questioned, a hint of worry laced on her tone.
Hisashi shook his head, "Don't worry, everything's fine, nee-chan. I'm just here to ask you something."
"And what is it?"
"Since you're an author, do you know the title of the novel that's been famous everywhere these past few days?"
Her face quickly brightened, clearly knowing the answer to his inquiry. "Ah, that novel! Yes, I do know the title. In fact, I'm friends with it's author. She invited me to celebrate her work's success next week."
"That's great!" A smile appeared on his face. "What is it? I want to read it, too."
Rurumi gazed at him, puzzled. "It's strange to see you interested with these kind of things, pretty younger brother. Even so, I'll tell you the title. It's called 'Quixotic Romance'. I've once read it, too. The story was incredible."
Hisashi mentally celebrated now that everything was going according to his plans. After this, all he needs to do is to read the novel and approach Hanamizu. They'd talk endless things about it and will end up getting closer than any other. Maybe in the near future, his crush would finally acknowledge him and they'd marry. Daydreaming about her for a minute made him grin up to his ears, falling in love with her all over again. He was very excited for tomorrow, who cares if he don't get a single blink sleep just to finish the novel? This is entirely for her, he'll take the consequences without any complaints.
He was kicked out from his imaginary world when he felt a stinging pain on his cheek. He jolted in shock, eyes extending in size as his hand unconsciously caressed his swollen cheek. He was too occupied with his thoughts that he didn't even noticed his older sister standing up from her chair to knock some sense out from him.
"W-what's that for, nee-chan?!" He screeched.
Rurumi deadpanned, "You're spacing out. I was asking you about your day."
"Why would you want to know about my day?" He frowned.
"I'm your sister! Of course, I have the rights!"
Hisashi huffed, intersecting his arms against his chest. "It's fine, at least it's not as boring as yours sitting inside your room thinking about something to write."
The older sibling's eyebrow twitched, "You're so insulting, I shouldn't have asked."
"Just kidding!" Hisashi laughed, walking out of the room. "I'm helping mom prepare the dinner, climb down once you're finished or feeling hungry. Dad's gonna get home soon, too."
Rurumi hummed in approval, shutting her door close. Hisashi went back to the kitchen and saw his mother cutting a couple of tomatoes. He strode towards her and lent her a hand, enthusiastically making one of his favorite dish. They were done after a few minutes, the sun was gone and darkness hovered over the sky.
After placing the foods and plates on their big round table, Hisashi's father came on time with a tired and heavy sigh. He's a funny and doting father, working at a university as a professor. He greeted Hisashi and his wife, making a beeline towards the room to change and go back to have dinner with his family. As they settled down, Rurumi stepped down from the stairs and joined them. Not long after, the table was filled with laughters and nice conversations, oblivious about the tragic event that will take place tomorrow.
