8 Meredith : 1st Night - 2 I’m woken up by Mbuga. He’s rapping loudly on the glass partition and calling at Johnson through the opening. Johnson slows down to listen. As he does so, I hear a faint wrup-wrup-wrup in the distance. I glance down at my watch. It’s one o’clock in the morning. We’re coming into another town—Beaufort West. Johnson slows down even more. He doesn’t want to be caught in a speed trap. The wrup-wrup-wrup is growing louder. Mbuga shouts at Johnson. “It’s a helicopter. Could be police searching for us. Get off the freeway at the next junction and hide the car under the overpass. Quick!” I’m already looking out of the rear window to see if I can spot any lights but I can’t see anything yet. We’re passing through an industrial area with fuel tanks on the left. Junct
