Across the way, Dany sees soldiers interrogating the driver of the van. The fireflies may be gone from her eyes, but her world is ­evaporating at the edges. She’s been running on force of will. When the adrenaline in her bloodstream runs out, she’ll drop like a rock. She’s been there before. For now, fear is her friend. Eva grinds the car forward again and stutters to a stop. They are two car lengths from the checkpoint, now, and her gaze keeps tripping over the soldiers. “We need a map,” she says. Mister Faraday, next to her, is nodding.
