Rejection

2118 Words
Chloe It was two in the morning and time for us to leave. We just needed to get by border patrol and would finally be free. I wished I could have spoken with my best friend, Tessa before we left, but there was no time. I knew she would understand; she knew how poorly the Alpha treated me and always encouraged me to run away. I left my room and went downstairs, where my mother awaited me. "Happy nineteenth birthday, Chloe," my mother said with a sad smile. Was it really a happy birthday? If we make it out of here, it could be. "Thanks, Mom. You ready to go?" I asked, swinging my backpack over my shoulder. "Yes," she replied nervously. "Let's go then. We have a long night ahead of us." We headed to the front door, and I opened it cautiously, looking around outside to ensure it was clear. After my encounter with Alpha Cameron, I wouldn't be surprised if he sent warriors to keep an eye on me. I couldn't see anyone, so we both stepped outside, and I shut the door behind us. We quickly made our way to the tree line to hide in the shadows. As we moved through the forest, my wolf was on high alert. I hoped we could avoid border patrol, but if not, my wolf would handle them. We were almost at the border. I could see it. But then the most intoxicating scent hit my senses. It was a mixture of musk and something slightly smokey and woodsy. Whatever it was, I was addicted. A twig snapped, drawing my attention in that direction. Alpha Cameron stepped out from behind a bush, blocking our way to the border. There was a dangerous look on his face. My wolf was going berserk in my head, having mixed feelings about everything happening. I finally understood why when she spoke. 'Mate,' she growled. Alpha Cameron was our fated mate. It couldn't be. A wolf's primary purpose was to find the other half of their soul, their fated mate—the person they were meant to spend the rest of their life with. But my wolf, Tatiana, hated Alpha Cameron for how he treated us and wanted nothing to do with him or his wolf. It was rare for wolves to reject their mate since it was like giving up half of your soul, but on rare occasions, it happened. Today was one of those occasions because Tatiana and I agreed that feeling incomplete would be better than being mated to Alpha Cameron. I pushed my mother behind me, trying to shield her from my mate. More of his men stepped out from behind trees and surrounded us, including his Beta, Mike, and Gamma, Joe. "Happy Birthday, Mate," Alpha Cameron taunted, popping the M in the word, mate. I could see the dangerous look in his eyes as he walked closer, causing a shiver to run down my spine. How could this be happening? "I've waited a whole year for you to sense me as your mate. Do you know how hard that was?" he asked, standing dangerously close to me. I didn't reply. Tatiana was growling in my head, wanting to take control. We wouldn't make it far, though. There were too many of them, and my mother's wolf wasn't strong. I would be putting her at risk if I fought. "I knew as soon as I let you leave my office today that you would try to run. Do you think I'm that stupid? That I wouldn't have my men watch you?" he spat, and now there was venom in his tone. I didn't answer. What the hell would I say? "Answer me!" He seethed, causing me to flinch. "I'm sorr…" I started apologizing, but he cut me off. "You're sorry? That's all you have to say?" he laughed darkly. "How could the moon goddess bless me with such a pathetic she-wolf? You can't even shift. You're weak and useless," he said bitterly. "I would never accept a mate like you." He scrunched his nose in disgust as he glared at me. "Fine, reject me so we can move on," I said firmly. Shock flashed through his eyes, but it was gone almost as fast as it appeared. "You think it's that simple? I plan on rejecting you, but if you thought that meant I would let you leave, you're wrong. I'll keep you as a toy to play with when I'm bored. I'll use you until I completely break your pathetic, weak soul, and then when I'm finished with you, I'll let my men have whatever scraps are left of you," He said with a smirk. I glanced over at his men only to see the hungry looks on their faces after hearing their Alpha's words. I would never let any of what he said happen. I would rather die first. I could feel my mother's body trembling against my back. She hadn't said a word yet through all this. It wasn't her fault, though. Omegas weren't fighters, and she was a genuine Omega. For some reason, the moon goddess forgot to give me the doormat trait because I was salivating at the thought of ripping these assholes' throats out. "Take Trisha into custody," Alpha Cameron ordered, and two of his men stepped forward before grabbing my mother's arms and pulling her away from me. "No," I yelled, fighting his men. "Don't, Chloe, just do as he says," my mother pleaded, silently warning me with her eyes not to shift. "Now, how about we get to that rejection so I can finally find my second chance mate, someone worthy of being with me," Alpha Cameron said, almost looking amused at the situation. I didn't reply. Tatiana and I just wanted the rejection to be over. Neither of us would be mourning the mate bond once it was done. "I, Alpha Cameron of the Desert Hill Pack, reject you, Chloe, as my mate and Luna," he said, smirking. I felt a stabbing sensation in my heart, but I welcomed it. It was a painful reminder that the bond connecting me to this monster was severing. I stood tall and didn't flinch. I saw the surprised look on his face. He probably expected me to be so weak that I would curl up in the fetal position because of his rejection. "I, Chloe, an Omega of the Desert Hill Pack, accept your rejection. I also sever all ties to the Desert Hill Pack and accept my new status as a rogue wolf," I spat, venom lacing my words. Cameron covered his heart with his hands and fell to his knees, looking hurt and shocked. He tried to hide the pain on his face but failed. The pain I felt was only fuelling my desire for freedom and the need to leave this territory once and for all. He got back on his feet, and his shock turned to rage. "You think you can leave me? Think again. I'll keep you chained to my goddamn bed for as long as I want, and there's nothing you can do about it," he growled, stalking toward me before punching me in the face. I fell to the ground, and darkness threatened to consume me. He kicked me repeatedly in the stomach and face. I could barely stay conscious when he finally stopped. "Now, how about we deal with your punishment," he said, and I forced my eyes open only to see him walking toward my mother. "No! Punish me, not her. This was my idea. I'll do anything you want. Just let her go," I begged, dragging my battered body toward them. Before I could reach them, he partially shifted his hand, extended his long, sharp claws, and swiftly sliced my mother's throat. Blood gushed out of the large gash, and her eyes widened. "No!" I screamed. The two guys holding my mother's arms let go, and she dropped to the ground, holding her throat. I could hear gurgling as she tried to breathe but couldn't. I dragged myself over to her and put my hands over hers as I sobbed uncontrollably. I knew right away the wound was fatal. It was deep and punctured her carotid artery. She wouldn't make it. I watched my mother take her last breath while I held her in my arms. So many emotions were running through me: grief, sadness, disbelief, and, the most prominent one, rage. "Now, I think it's clear what will happen to you if you try to run away from me again. Right?" Alpha Cameron asked as he reached down to grab my arm. Something deep inside my soul broke, and Tatiana took over. I retreated to a dark place at the back of my mind, where I could grieve the loss of my mother in silence. My will to leave shattered in the blink of an eye. ———————————————————————- Tatiana I didn't waste time when I got control, shifting into my wolf form. I was a large wolf with fur the same red tone as Chloe's hair. Rage was bubbling inside me. I wanted blood. More specifically, my mate's blood. Alpha Cameron took the most important person from us, and I would end his life for it. I saw the shocked look on his face when he realized that I had a wolf and was far too big to be an omega. My size was comparable to an alpha. "Capture her. Alive!" he barked. All his men shifted into their wolves. There were five of them, including Alpha Cameron. One immediately attacked me, but I was quicker. I jumped out of the way, and as he slid by me, I extended my claws and tore through the length of his torso. He yelped in pain as he fell to the ground. Two more attacked simultaneously, and I got knocked to the ground. I jumped up and latched my teeth around the neck of one of them and ripped it out, killing him instantly. The taste of blood in my mouth made me crave more and turned me feral. The second one tried to jump on my back, but I spun my head around and bit down on his hind leg. He yelped in pain. I turned just in time to see Alpha Cameron approaching me with a syringe. He extended his hand like he was going to jab me with it. I quickly bit down on his hand, causing him to drop the syringe. I had bitten him so hard that I ripped off his pinky finger in the process. "Awww…You b***h!" he hissed. As much as I wanted to end him right here and now, I could hear more warriors approaching. I needed to get out of there before it was too late. I turned away from Alpha Cameron and ran toward the border as fast as I could. A few wolves paralleled me on both sides, but luckily, I was also faster than the average wolf. The further I ran, the more I noticed the wolves starting to fall behind. I didn't slow down. I wouldn't, not until I was sure I was far enough away. I had been running for hours, adrenaline pushing me forward. At one point, I rolled my body through a mud puddle to mask my scent. I didn't sense any wolves nearby. Hopefully, I had lost them. I kept pushing forward, wanting to be absolutely sure I wasn't followed. I came across a creek and decided to get in and follow it along for a while. That way, no one would be able to track me. It was getting dark, and I had been running for so long that I felt like I might collapse. I decided to stop for the night and rest. Tomorrow, I would push myself hard again and make sure I was far enough away from my old territory. I found a cave and couldn't smell any other animals, so I walked in and claimed it as mine for the night. I collapsed onto the ground, feeling exhausted. Finally, I could grieve not only for my mother's death but also for the loss of my human. Goddess, I already miss hearing Chloe's voice inside my head. No matter how often I tried to talk to her, she didn't reply. The worst part was that I couldn't even sense her presence anymore. She was gone. Would she ever come back to me? I wasn't sure I could do this alone.
