I want to be far,
Yet I go only near,
He makes me feel things,
But none of them is fear.
Freya
I placed the flowers on my father’s grave and a tear escaped my eyes. I wanted to come over to my old place and hence I missed class on Friday. When Alexander asked the reason I almost let it slip but I was not ready to share it yet. I was not ready to share that I talked to my father’s grave once in a while or that I cry here for hours or that I wish he could still just walk out of that grave.
“I missed you.” I whispered and sat down next to the grave.
“I am fine I think. I just keep getting some weird visions. And I have a good new, “ I rambled on, “Since I shifted to a new tone , I don’t have nightmares anymore. Maybe the shrink was right.”
I dusted of the dried flowers and leaves slowly while I continued to talk.
“There is this boy, Alexander. He is- was such a jerk to me. But now he is hell bent on my apology. Well, you always taught me to be forgiving and nice but he made people think stupid things about you. He makes me angry and sometimes really weird. But the weirdest part is he makes me feel safe.
Even when he bullied me, he gave off that vibe. Dad, am I losing sanity?”
I sighed and buried my head in between my knees.
“Freya, its so good to see.” A female voice jerked me to attention.
“Do I know you?” I asked slightly anxious at a pretty girl walking towards me with a thousand watt smile.
“I am Haylien’s sister, Alicia.” She introduced herself and I frowned as to why she was here.
“I live in this town and visiting a family member. I saw you so I thought I should say Hi.” She explained herself and I gave her a small smile.
“So how are things back at school?” She asked as we have been friends for a long time.
“Good, I think?” I answered rather uncomfortably.
“How is the bully?” She sounded amused somehow.
“Bullying me to forgive him.”
She laughed at my words and I swear it was damn angelic.
“As per Haylien’s observation, he likes you.” She said and this time I laughed out loud.
“He hated from the first moment we met. Liking isn’t in Alexander’s book.” I explained her my reason of laughing.
“Does he give out absurd compliments to you?” She asked with twinkling eyes.
I nodded.
“Does he want you around, by anyway possible?” She asked and thinking for a while I nodded.
He does threaten me to stay close or he roams around me.
“Then he likes you. The question is, do you like him?” She sounded really worried as if it a serious problem.
I didn’t like him, he was a bully. I just liked his smile and maybe his hair and just one time when he saved or maybe when we did reading together.
Oh, oh.....Do I like him? I can’t, he is way out of league and also dangerous for me.
“I am trying to friends with him.” I answered diplomatically.
She chuckled at this.
“Friends, sure, that’s the first step.” She mumbled, I think.
“How do you know so much about him?” I asked.
“Well, let’s just say he like a brother to me as much as Haylien.” And smiled a sly smile.
Did she knew Alexander before Haylien? Her words confounded me but I didn’t ask any questions or else she might think I am interested in Alexander too much.
I got up from the ground and dusted my jeans.
“It was nice meeting you Alicia, I will get going now.” I extended my hands for a shake.
As I was walking way she called out, “Give Alexander a chance, he is not that bad.”
I nodded with a tight lipped smile and walked away.
Meeting with Alicia was kind of weird. I was not feeling as if she was a stranger but I also felt that I was forgetting something. I just felt that she was right, Alexander was not that bad.

“No way in hell Tessa.” I shook my head in a vigorous no with my eyes tightly shut.
“Why? I will be there the whole time and it is at Haylien’s place. He will be hurt.” She whined unliked herself.
Since when did she care if a boy’s feeling was hurt?
“I am not going to some rowdy celebration party.” I stood my ground mostly because my mom never allowed stay out late parties.
“Please, Freya. I have never been to a party like this. I have always been ignored as a goth girl of school. No one ever asked me, please help me out this time. I can’t go alone and I have no one but you.”
Suddenly I felt my resolve fade and looked at Tessa. She was indeed in dire need of friends and it was really hard for me to refuse to help. I even helped Alexander when he bullied me.
“Fine. I will just leave you there till we find Haylien and leave immediately.” I agreed with a heavy sigh of defeat.
“Great.” She said in a tired tone.
And walked away dialling someone’s number.
I am not sure what happened but I had to ask mom and then I am going to a freaking party.
I have never been to one because I don’t like them. As simple as that.
And when Alexander asked me that whether I was coming to the party or not, I refused. Now if I showed up what will he think?
“Come on, I told Haylien, I asked your mother as well. Can we decide what will we wear?” Tessa walked in and gave me challenging look as if she wanted to say I have no excuses left to bail on the party.
“What are wearing?” I asked helplessly since I had no clue.
“I guess we both need help then.” Tessa said pulling me along her.
“Where are we going?”
“My mother, she will be shocked and aJoshd if I told her about the party. And she is totally fashionable so for this time I need her help.” Tessa explained now hopping in the
“Fine let’s go then.” I was still trying to accept the fact that Tessa made my mom agree and also was interested in getting a dress.
Why the change in behaviour, did she had a crush?
As we sat down in Tessa’s car, I asked, “Who is the boy?”
“Huh?” She responded, her eyebrows scrunching together.
“You seem excited for the party. You are trying to put an effort. You are even planning on dressing up.” I shared my deductions with her.
“Whatever.” She responded shortly and I had to laugh at her transparency.
She was not even trying to denying the fact. I have to find it out myself because she was not the kind to share.
After silently driving for few minutes we reached the central market area and a small but cute looking boutique. It was called Contessa and I realised it was Tessa’s full name. I realized guiltily that it had been almost three months here and I didn’t even ask for her actual name.
“Don’t feel guilt, I hate being called Contessa.” She might have noticed me feeling the guilt.
We entered the shop and a smile formed on my face. It was definitely not those branded big showrooms type but it was cute, colourful and a charming shop. The walls were painted maroon and covered with small diamond shaped mirrors. The walls were adorned by lot of historical art and antique lamps. There was a rack of clothes built across the room and a reception counter on the left side of the shop.
There was a middle aged woman on the counter, typing something on her computer. I could see the clear resemblance. She looked a little aged version of Tessa without all the black. She had dark locks, forest green eyes and slight wrinkles to side of her eyes.
A little on the plump side, her mom was stylishly dressed and had some expert made her hair into a beautiful style.
“mom, I need dresses for dance.” Tessa said to the woman on the counter and she looked up wide eyed.
“Did you just say you need a dress Tesi?” Her mom reacted like Tessa said calling her Tesi at that which made Tessa scowl.
“And this is Freya, the one I told you about.” She introduced both of us.
“Hi, I am Camila. It is so good to finally meet you. And gosh, Tesi, isn’t she pretty?” Her mom gushed and I felt a little embarrassed.
“Thanks Mrs. Krause.”
“Oh, please , it’s Camila. Now, finally that my daughter is going to some party, let’s look for some dresses.” She sounded excited about this.
And then for next three hours we searched, tried and rejected the clothes. Finally, Tessa decided on a dark purple dress reaching just above her thigh. It was off shoulders and made of some shimmering material and it definitely accentuated her figure.
For me, we choose a red dress, a little too tight for me and with a strap too thin. Knowing my mother and my own discomfort, I was also give a black mini shrug that went very well with that dress. And since it was not above the knee, I was fine with it.
Her mother shut down the store as soon as we were done for her daughters benefit and decided to help us with getting ready. Tessa was cleared of all the kohl, and dark mascara and dark shade lipstick and made more glamorous with sparkly makeup. While for me, Camila said she was aiming for sexy, which with my baby face is kind of a hard job to do.
But she managed everything well. While Tessa looked unbelievably gorgeous with the dress, the makeup and sleek ponytail, I had to admit I did change in a good sense with red dress on, deep red lipstick and smoky eye makeup. My hair was left open as Camila keep praising them making me blush too much.
“You girls are going on your own or someone will pick you up?” Camila asked.
And Tessa’s answer surprised me, “Haylien is picking us up.”
Wasn’t he the host and stay at home? Why was he picking us up?
I suddenly noticed a smile on Tessa’s face, not a big one because that was not like Tessa but a small smile like she was smiling to herself and it hit me then.
Haylien was Tessa’s crush. Great!
