REBECCA’S POV I sat in my car outside the house for twenty minutes. The engine was off. The city sounds came through the closed windows, the ordinary evening noise of New York continuing without interruption, a taxi horn two streets over, someone’s laughter carrying and then fading, the hum of a world that had no idea I was sitting perfectly still trying to hold two truths in my hands at once. I held the steering wheel and I turned over what Daniel had said with the careful attention I applied to everything significant. My knuckles were pale against the leather.
