I had been watching Edmund’s attention deteriorate for seven days.
The first day had been the systems failures, the calls that had not stopped, the specific expression on his face when he came home and smelled the lamb and understood that whatever he had been hoping to accomplish through the dinner was not going to happen. The second day had been the legal filing, the prenup challenge arriving in his email like a punch he had not seen coming. The third through seventh days had been the progressive realization that his business was not responding to his control the way it should, that his partners were being cautious, that his confidence was no longer sufficient to manage the room.
By the seventh day, Edmund had stopped looking at me at all.
