I sat down while he was talking.
I hadn’t meant to. My legs simply decided for me somewhere around the second sentence, and I found myself lowering onto the arm of the couch in the front room, phone still pressed to my ear, my bag still sitting untouched on the table by the door where I’d left it minutes ago. The house was dark except for the lamp in the hallway, and I sat in that half-light and listened to Daniel’s voice come through steady and unhurried, a man laying out facts he had clearly rehearsed, or perhaps facts he had simply lived with so long that they no longer required rehearsal.
