Chapter 14: Beginning Of a New Chapter..2

Dawn came quickly and Brittany was still very tired,she had not gotten enough rest as she was anxious about how her first day would go.

Picking up her phone,she saw a message from Leah.

It was sent a few hours ago as the time zones were quite different.

'Good morning Ivy' it read

She smiled sweetly,her heart instantly flooding with warmth.

She replied,

'You don’t sleep?'

Almost immediately,Leah started typing.

'Are you surprised?'

Brittany:

'Would not say i am'

Leah:

'Lol'

'How are you?'

'Did you sleep good?'

Brittany:

'I'm fine and yeah, I did. Did you?'

Leah:

'I'm quite sure you are aware that I did not sleep'

Brittany:

"Not even a short nap?'

Leah:

'Not useful'

'So how's your day going to be like?'

Brittany:

'Second day at work and I don’t feel overwhelmed or anxious,much to my surprise'

Leah:

'Why should you be anxious? You've got this. First day was perfect,so would the rest days'

Brittany:

'I don't know...I feel unusually calm'

Leah:

'Is that a concern? I'm confused,genuinely.'

Brittany:

'Lol,it's not..I just don't feel this calm about things like this,it feels weird..as if something would go wrong'

Leah:

'Don’t overthink anything Ivy'

Brittany:

'I won't.'

'How's yours?'

Leah:

'The regular.'

Brittany:

'And what's the regular?'

Leah:

'Just a few classes,a few meetings later in the day and perhaps some appointments'

Brittany:

'Question?'

Leah:

'Go ahead'

Brittany:

'Are you the CEO or something?'

she asked half jokingly

Leah:

'Yeah,co-founded with Brian'

Brittany:

'Are you actually being serious now?'

Leah:

'I would lie because?'

Brittany:

'When..like when did you guys even start it up and what do you even do?'

Leah:

'Call?'

Brittany:

'Absolutely' she replied and dialed her number.

In a single dial,Leah picked up

'You still on bed?'Leah asked in a raspy voice,sounding seductive.

"Uh yeah" Brittany smiled softly,fiddling with her hair

"So would you answer me?" she added

Leah laughed softly

"First thought about founding a gaming company as a mere joke when we were much younger but it did turn out real...at middle school we started learning the basics" Leah explained patiently.

"How did you even get the money for it?" Brittany asked the one reasonable question

"You don't know?" Leah asked,as if surprised

Brittany was puzzled.

"How would i?"

"You all sure talk a lot so I thought you would know" Leah explained

"You're not so easy to keep tabs on"

Leah chuckled softly.

"Well I'm an artist,I write novels,i make apps and well..sports"

"What am I actually doing with myself?" Brittany said jokingly.

"You're an intern at Jones Day,that ain't small" Leah said

"But seriously how do you do it?" Brittany asked

"Determination and past experiences plays a very huge role in everything I've got"

"You sound way too mature for your age" Brittany couldn't help but comment

Leah laughed.

"And what's maturity to you?" Leah asked,curious

"Everything you exhibit" Brittany replied

"Wealth and rudeness?" Leah laughed

"It's more than that..the way you speak,your voice,your aura..it all shows that you no longer possess that naivety of a teen..it's almost like you never even had it."

"When life forces you to a corner...you'd be exactly like me,if not worse"

"Your parents..would certainly be more than thankful to God" Brittany joked

"Mom's dead..dad remarried,started getting abused by both parents,went to stay with my elder brother..got abused also and now...I'm with my sister and Brian." Leah said,her voice filled with something unfamiliar to Brittany.

Brittany was stunned into silence at once.

"I'm so sorry about that" she apologized

Leah laughed.

"I don't remember saying that you caused any of it"

"Still...how do you even handle it?" Brittany couldn't help but ask.

"Work,school,music,Brian,my sister" Leah replied in a soft tone

"You know,I never understood your closeness with Brian until now"

"Most people don't" Leah chuckled

"Go and prepare for work,we'll chat" Leah said,casually changing the topic.

"I have about two hours left,why hurry?" Brittany whined

"It's the literal second day,don't be late"

"Uh fine" Brittany grumbled

"But I'm calling immediately it's break,deal?"

Leah smiled to herself

"Okay Ivy"

"I love you" Brittany whispered and hung up immediately.

Smiling at her phone,she hopped out of bed in great spirits.

Leah on the other hand,sat in her study,silently scolding herself for sharing too much.

She had no idea why but she felt oddly connected to Brittany in strange ways.

With a sigh,she looked down at her phone and closed her eyes gently.

Brittany had just gotten out of shower when her phone buzzed,she walked towards it,picked it up to check who it was.

It was Leah.

'The driver would be there in an hour time'

Brittany was speechless.

She replied,

'What driver?'

Leah:

'How do you intend on going to work?'

Brittany:

'I don't know..a cab?'

Leah:

'My girlfriend,taking a cab?'

Brittany:

'Yeah..?'

Leah:

'Not happening'

'It's the same guy from yesterday..Just a different car'

Brittany looked at her screen,speechless,she gave Leah a call.

"Leah.." Brittany called out softly

"You don't need to do anything for me"

"And that's why you gave me a call? To tell me not to make things convenient for you?" Leah asked with a raised brow.

"I just don't think it's necessary to.."

"Get dressed quickly,he might be there a little sooner." Leah interrupted,clearly not giving what she said much thought.

"Can you listen?" Brittany asked

"I absolutely can not" Leah replied

"Be good and listen to me okay?" she softened her tone slightly.

"Fine" Brittany sighed

"Great' Leah replied

"Have a nice day"

"You too" Brittany smiled gently as she stared at her phone screen that showed her chat with Leah.

Still smiling,she suddenly thought of something and snapped back,dialing Luke's number.

After a few minutes,Luke replied.

"Queen Bri! what may be the reason for this call?" he asked sounding slightly upset.

"I'm so sorry' Brittany apologized,laughing.

"That funny?" Luke scoffed.

"We'll talk in person" Brittany replied,more serious this time.

"You called to say that?" He asked,getting more annoyed.

"Well uhh I'll see you in thirty minutes time.." she said playfully and hung up,leaving Luke speechless as she clenched his phone in his hands.

He of course knew that Leah was the reason for Brittany's dismissive attitude just then.

That thought irked him as he looked at his screen In silent anger.

The driver Leah had arranged for Brittany was extremely punctual as he arrived at the exact time he was told to.

Brittany was shocked by his respect for Leah.

she did know that Leah was his boss but he seemed more frightened by Leah than respectful though and that's what she couldn't quite understand.

Leah was commanding and cold but she personally felt like this sort of fear didn't stem from appearance alone.

She didn't ask about it though. It wasn't really her business anyway.

Sitting at the back seat of the black Porsche,she looked out the window in silence,admiring the city's view.

"Ma'm?" The driver suddenly called out carefully.

"Anything?" she asked,curious.

"I don't mean to offend you or anything but if i may ask,how did you manage to get my boss to do this?" he carefully probed.

She was speechless.

"Do what?" she laughed

He looked at her through the rearview mirror,his eyes seemed to hold something strange..something that told her that Leah sure wasn't an easy person in the eyes of others.

"To care about you..to..to speak about you in the way she does.." he replied

"I uhh don't know..." she replied,still wondering what exactly Leah must have done to make a man his size and type look so wary while speaking about her.

"Don't be so guarded,it's unsettling" Brittany said as she was starting to feel uncomfortable with the way he stared at her with so much fear.

"So..sorry ma'm" He quickly apologized

"Please can you not tell my boss?" he pleaded

Brittany felt even more puzzled now.

"I won't.." she assured him.

"Thank you,I won't speak anymore ma'm" he said as if trying to avoid death or something.

She didn't ask anything,just stared at the young man sitting so guarded in front.

I guess there's more to know about this mysterious beauty than I thought..
