CHAPTER 2:DENIAL WHILE IN ACCEPTANCE
.........
They are already three weeks into the new semester and Leah's still her usual cold self, seen with only one person,Brian, her childhood best friend. The incident that happened three weeks back was never mentioned by leah neither was it mentioned by Brittany as they had not spoken to each other since that day.
On that particular Thursday,Leah went about her day as usual but she felt really odd given that she had not seen Brittany all day,it bothered her so much..more than it should have.
That day, wherever she heard Brittany's name being mentioned, she would stop to listen,In hopes of finding out what might have happened to Brittany but she got no useful information from listening to the gossip of the students on the hallway. She felt oddly sad, much to her surprise. It was so bad,she couldn't even concentrate in class, she just had to go back to her room to see if she could get any information of Brittany's location.
"Am i seeing things or is my workaholic best friend back home in the afternoon??" Brian,in his deep voice exclaims, surprised
Leah rolled her eyes that had carried a hint of restlessness and unease which was really unlike her,Brian was shocked and started to fret,"Are you good,Leah?" He asked in a shacky voice as he imagined the worst because not just anything could make Leah panic but she looked extremely worried at the moment and it scared Brian to no end, he desperately needed an explanation, something, anything! But leah just headed for the stairs with her laptop in hand.
Brian watched on with unease and decided to follow her upstairs and on getting there, she was not in her room so he went straight to the study, given that it was the only place Leah frquented aside her room, she rarely went to the other parts of the house and usually stayed on the last floor where her room and study was.
Walking across the long hallway,of Leah's 'personal' floor, the background music Leah had set was playing in the background,it was soothing and relaxing, the hallway was cold,Leah's scent filled the air,the long hallway curtains where down, covering the ceiling to floor window. The hallway was sight appealing and had a wonderful interior. It was a shame that only Leah and himself could admire the beauty of the apartment because Leah practically forbade visitors.
After walking for a while and finally getting to the door of the study,he gently pushed it open and walked in,not caring if she wanted his company or not. He was greeted by the strong fragrance emitting from Leah and the coolness of the room before walking a bit more to see Leah sitting in front of the large, black, wooden furniture, staring at the laptop in front of her, with glasses on,eyes completely focused on the screen, with her fingers flying across the keyboard swiftly,as if searching desperately for something. Brian was beyond curious and got closer to check what exactly she was up to. He sat next to her on the soft, comfortable office like chair, peering into her computer screen with eyes filled with curiosity and confusion.
"Why are you looking that Brittany girl up?"
He asked, puzzled and got no response
"Anyway,if you're so interested, she went for an interview for an internship" he said casually, finally picking her interest
"What?" Leah gave him a long look. As if saying, 'care to explain how you know?'
He caught on to the look, smiled and explained that Luke,Brittany's friend, was also his friend and the topic randomly came up a few days back.
Leah heaved a sigh of relief and was about to stand up when she remembered something,
"Where is the internship at?"
Now Brian was even more confused as to why she was suddenly caring about Brittany. He knew about her feelings for Brittany and he also knew that she wouldn't act on them so her sudden interest surprised him but he answered nevertheless
"Paris,pretty far from here"
Leah furrowed her brows,as if in deep thought before her eyes turned colder and she walked out of the room, obviously in a really bad mood.
She decided to go over to Brittany's apartment to see if she would be home, not to approach her, just to be sure she was okay.
On getting to Brittany's apartment, she ran into Luke who frowned the moment he saw her. He had no intention or interest in talking to her and normally she also would not pay him any heed but today, she needed to be sure that Brittany was okay so she calmly walked up to him, each step fast and authorative. She had the aura of a powerful man, with an intimidating look, height and voice.
Luke felt somewhat moved by her beauty and elegance but he quickly snapped back to reality, remembering that the girl he had loved for years had her heart set on the girl he was presently looking at.
"Brittany is..?" Leah said as soon as she was close enough for him to hear her,not wanting to waste anytime on him
"I don't think that's considered a greeting" Luke said in a hostile yet respectful manner, despite him being older than Leah
"It's not, where's brittany?" She asked again, ignoring his unfriendly tone, cause she herself was not so friendly either
"And I should disclose that to you because?" Luke asked in turn but got no response.
Leah proceeded to walk away as she was sure that nothing had happened to Brittany else Luke would not be so composed.
Luke was left standing there with clenched fists. He felt insulted but he couldn't go after her cause it would be more embarrassing for him if he did so.
Leah was considered the school's mysterious beauty with the best grades and looks. The only thing they knew about leah was that she played both football and basketball for the school and she was the best player among both the males and females, and she had a best friend who was the prince charmimg of the school,he was the complete replica of Leah.Aside that, nothing else was known about her.
........
it was already getting dark outside when Brittany got back to the school after a long day,she felt tired and needed to go get some rest so she went straight to her apartment, the one she shared with Luke.
"Heyyy" Luke stands up and exclaims the moment he hears the door opening
"Why so excited?" Brittany asked with a chuckle
"Nothing much,I just missed you." He replied with a soft smile
"Yeah right" she rolled her eyes and then smiled at him before heading to her own room,"I'll be out in about 30 minutes, alright?" She said before turning to shut the door, leaving Luke in the living room, smiling at himself.
If it isn't obvious,Luke had the biggest crush on Brittany for so many years, since elementary even and he knew he couldn't have her but at least,he was her best friend, right?
He gave a long sigh before sitting back down on the sofa, continuing his work on his phone.
Shortly after,Brittany came out of her room,in a bath robe, hair slightly wet and messy as she had just taken her bath, eyes glowing so brightly,Luke felt like he could see himself in those eyes that shone so brightly,he was falling all over again for this perfect existence that didn't belong to him. This perfect girl that he had known for years, the girl he could only have in his dreams.
"Why are you looking at me that way?" Brittany asked with a soft laugh,it sounded so soothing,Luke started to imagine how that voice would that voice would sound, moaning In his ears. He quickly dismissed the thought as he was starting to get aroused by his own imaginations. He simled,"nothing much" he said but his eyes seemed to say otherwise but she chose to ignore it.
Sitting down, she picks up her phone and scrolls through t****k,despite having several important things to attend to.
"Don't you have things to do?' Luke asked, chuckling,as if mocking her unseruoisness
"Pleaseeee I deserve a little break!!" She exclaims
"I know,I know" he laughs for a while before assuming a serious look and staring into her eyes,"You really do"
"Its not that serious Jeez!" She laughs and looks away, leaving him with his wandering and confusing thoughts.
"Leah asked of you" he says suddenly, after giving it much thought. She froze, completely floored,"What?" She asked, clearly in shock. Her reaction disappointed Luke,he knew she had completely fallen for Leah and there was no space for anyone else In her heart, not him,not anyone else, just Leah.
He really wanted to see her happy but he didn't think Leah would bring her that happiness.
"Yeah" he said casually and without much thought,Brittany bolted out of the apartment, heading to the one place Luke hated the most. Leah's apartment.
She had no idea why she was heading there with no specific aim or why she hadn't even bothered to change into something appropriate and just like that,in a black robe, slightly messy hair, and absolutely nothing in mind,Brittany stood outside Leah's apartment, just staring at the door for the longest of time, thinking about what she could say.
"Having someone over?" Leah asked, looking towards Brian who was equally surprised to hear the doorbell as it was past nine pm and he wasn't expecting anyone and he knew leah certainly wasn't either so he was a bit skeptical.
"At this time? With you around?" He asked with a laugh.
Leah laughed softly,"please check out who's there, will you" She said in a cute, coquetish voice
Brian rolled his eyes,"nahh we aren't expecting anyone so whoever is there can as well head back" he said, clearly unbothered.
The doorbell rang repeatedly, the person sure wasn't giving up and it annoyed both Brian and leah to no end but Brian had no choice but to check out who it was, given that leah didn't really have a welcoming nor friendly approach or look.
On getting to the door,Brian opened it and his mouth fell upon as well,he couldn't help but admire her looks. He had to admit,Brittany was a beauty, one that seemed natural, not forced, just effortless. She smelled really good and looked confused,in a cute way. He looked overly surprised but he soon quickly snapped back and said in a shacky voice,"umm.. hi" The usual calm and composed Brian was speechless,he just didn't expect to see Brittany.
He looked over at Leah who was sitting quietly on the couch, looking intently at her phone with utmost seriousness, glasses on,head down, looking all attractive and not once bothering to look over at the door.
"Um i.. I don't..know." Brittany stammered
"Want to come in?" Brian asked, completely unsure of what to do
"I'd rather not, she's in,right?" She said, referring to Leah. He nodded with a slight smile
"Umm i..please give her this, will you?" She said, handing him a paper, that obviously had a note in it,with eyes that shone in a way,he couldn't reject. He knew Leah was in love with the girl before him and she had tried to avoid her for years,in order not to complicate things and he knew that she wouldn't be too pleased if he did collect the note Brittany handed him but he took it anyway,"thank you" She gave a sweet smile and turned to leave. Brian stood there for a while before heading inside with the paper in hand.
"What took you so long?" Leah asked casually
He thought for a while before deciding to hand the message over to Leah
"Um someone said I should give you this" he said, giving her the note. She frowned and didn't move to collect it,she just stared at the paper In his hand coldly, clearly uninterested and unbothered by it.
"From.. Brittany" he slowly said. She froze, looked up at him,a light flickered across her eyes, one that went as quickly as it came but he saw it,that one silent look that was louder than any said word could be.
She cleared her throat, eyes getting wet, chest heavy, heart pounding, eyes unfocused and lost
Brian stood there, waiting for her to calm down and after some time, she did but her mind was in chaos.
"Dro..drop it over there" Leah said in a hoarse voice, gesturing towards the table at the center of the room. Brian did as he was told and walked into his own room, leaving her with her thoughts.
She looked at the paper for a while before reaching out to pick it up,hands shaking, cold sweat dropping from her head down, heart beating, mind racing.
After a moment of hesitation, she finally picked up the paper, and she immediately perceived that sweet, floral, familiar fragrance on it. It really was from Brittany, the one she hated to love.
After some thinking, she took a deep breath and tossed the paper into the trashcan next to her with a tear at the corner of her eyes.
She wanted her but she didn't want to start a conversation that would lead to a chapter of her life that would end quickly....
