Chapter 6

1039 Words
Elma Pov Servants and nobles pass me by, looking at me in disgust and confusion as I walk to the Hall of Blossom. I am utterly mortified. "Dear Moon Goddess, is that the breeder His Majesty acquired yesterday? Such an eyesore. She has no shame, walking around in those…" One maid whispers to her companion, not minding the fact that I could hear her. I only realize my appearance when I pass a mounted mirror in the passageway. The robe is far more transparent than I originally thought, leaving very little to the imagination. It is ripped in places, and the sash barely holds it all together. I look a mess. My mind flashes back to the encounter with the King last night. He showed absolutely no restraint, and I did not exactly resist, either. Now, with the euphoria of his touch gone, I face the harsh reality. I am technically a rogue wolf in a foreign kingdom, accused of murder, and condemned to be a birthing vessel for a sadistic Lycan King. How much lower can you fall, Elma? The maid in front of me moves too quickly. I try calling out to her. She ignores me, pretending my voice is just the wind. I do not let it get to me, desperate to cover what is left of my dignity. "Please, miss… can I at least have something else to wear?" The maid turns back for a moment, rolling her eyes. "What could a breeder possibly want to cover up? The High Luna is waiting. We cannot keep her waiting to attend to your whims." My eyes fall to the ground, and I keep them there for the entirety of our walk until we arrive at the entrance of the hall. The guards situated at either side of the towering doors look me over, their eyes lingering on my chest and hips. I want the ground to open up and swallow me whole. I use my hair to cover my breasts and drag the robe tighter around myself. They push the doors open, revealing the interior where a group of noble Lycan ladies gathers. In the middle of the hall, on a gold-rimmed seat, sits a woman with piercing silver eyes. Two maids drag jade combs through her long, black hair. The entire hall of powerful Lycan women and their servants turns in my direction. I immediately lower my head and follow the footsteps of the maid who brought me here. "High Luna, here is the breeder you had me summon." "Hm." The hall is silent. I feel eyes on every inch of my skin. They are all appraising me; never have I wished so fervently to shrink in size. "So, you are the one responsible for my son’s death?" The High Luna does not sound like a woman who has lost a child. She does not sound broken, hateful, or in pain. There is only an emptiness in the way she speaks. Somehow, that feels far worse to me. "I—I…" I want to defend myself, to tell them again how it is all a setup. How can I possibly kill Damien if I am unconscious on the scene? What exactly in my frame suggests I can take on a Lycan of his calibre? Even Liam would think carefully before starting something with such a beast. For some reason, Nadia uses my banishment to carry out a plan I am sure even Alpha Liam is aware of. They use my pain to achieve a political goal, assassinating a prominent member of the most powerful Wolvian kingdom in the entire region. As if wrecking me from my home and tearing down my spirits is not enough, Liam lets me take the fall for his own games. "Cat got your tongue, girl?" I remain silent, keeping my eyes fixed firmly to the floor. My body burns under the stares of so many powerful Lycans. "What a sorry sight," someone laughs. "Seems your son, His Majesty, was quick to play with his new toy!" says another. Followed by fits of laughter. The High Luna scoffs. "He has always loved his playthings, that one. Until he gets tired, of course, and breaks them into tiny pieces." The High Luna holds up her hand, and her servants stop combing. She stands up, taking slow steps towards me. Her presence is overwhelming, and I feel my wolf going berserk within me as she draws closer. "You little pig. You think by trapping Xander with your sad excuse for a body, you can avoid proper punishment?" "I… I did not kill—" "Bring me the whip!" No, please…” “A guard yanks my hair, forcing me to the ground. "Ah!" I cry out in pain. "I shall give my dear subjects a show today. Hand it here." I watch from the corner of my eye as the High Luna accepts a horse-tail whip from a servant. She cracks it in the air, and my whole body goes numb before it lands. All at once, everything from the past two days flashes before my eyes. From the night with Liam, to every second of his rejection in front of the pack, to Nadia’s betrayal… everything seems like one huge game fate plays with me. The pain from the whip is so intense that I do not know when I start crying out for the Moon Goddess. There is no answer; only the laughter from the noble Lycan ladies consumes me. What sin have I committed? What— My consciousness is fading. I can no longer breathe. "You think you can take my son away from me and strut around this castle freely? Not even Xander’s d**k can save you, girl! Useless little i***t!" The High Luna is enraged beyond description; her silver eyes turn bloodshot. She already shows signs of shifting into her Lycan form. "Y-Your Highness… you might kill her—" "Then let her die! Let her die!" Again and again, she hits me with the whip. I can no longer hold on, feeling myself slip into oblivion. As I pass into the darkness, I hear a familiar voice. "Mother. What do you think you are doing?" King Xander.
