The house had been tense for days.
Their father had been restlessâquietly so. Always on calls, always distracted, always somewhere else even when he was sitting right there with them.
Their mother noticed.
She noticed the way he stayed up longer than usual.
The way he stared at nothing sometimes.
The way he avoided questions with soft smiles that didnât reach his eyes.
She wanted to ask.
But he wouldn't tell her anything.
And that worried her more.
Until finallyâ
He got the call.
An approval.
He didnât waste time.
đ¤
Dinner was quiet.
Evie was setting the table neatly when their father walked in.
She looked up immediately, her face lighting up as she leaned in to kiss his cheek.
âWelcome dad.â
He smiled softly, patting her shoulder.
âWhereâs your sister?â
Evie shrugged slightly.
âShe should be home soon.â
He nodded, but there was a flicker of something else in his eyes.
Their mother placed the last dish on the table and sat down, smoothing her dress like she always did.
They waited.
And waited.
But Rhea didnât come.
Eventually, they started eating.
Evie was gently, pouring water into the cups.
When he sighed.
âI want to make an announcement. I was waiting for Rhea, butâŚâ
He set his cutlery down.
âIâll be traveling for a few days.â
Evieâs hand paused mid-air.
âTraveling?â she echoed softly.
âWhy?â their mother asked, her voice careful.
âItâs just for a meeting.â
She frowned slightly.
âDear⌠you just got back few days ago and now?. Why so suddââ
âItâs really important. Thatâs why.â
There was something in his tone that shut the room up.
âBut Dad, you shouldnât be traveling. Your healthââ
âHoney, itâs okay. Iâve checked in with the doctor.â
âButââ
âIâll be fine, sweetheart.â His voice softened. âYou worry too much.â
She sighed, but her eyes didnât relax.
âOf course we do. Itâs our responsibility. As much as we are yours⌠youâre ours too.â
That made him smile, properly this time.
âYouâre too sweet.â
She shook her head slightly.
âHow long?â
âJust a few days.â He shrugged. âThatâs all.â
ââŚOkay.â
Halfway through the mealâ
The front door opened.
Rhea.
She walked in like the house belonged to her and she didnât owe anyone anythingâwhich, to her, she didnât.
Her bag dropped onto the couch carelessly as she walked straight to the kitchen.
âGood evening to you,â her father said, turning slightly.
No response.
Not even a glance.
Just an eye roll.
âYouâre home late,â he added.
Rhea opened the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water.
âWhen did I start getting curfew?â she shot back.
âBut I sent you a message. I said I needed you home early. Something importantââ
âSo?â she cut in, twisting the bottle open. âIâm here now, arenât I?â
His jaw tightened.
âYou donât seem to understand your importance in this.â
Rhea let out a dry laugh as she walked in.
âHere we go again.â
She dropped into a chair lazily.
âEverybody gets a dad who treats them like princessesâŚâ she muttered, leaning back.
âAnd me? I got blessed with the overly dramatic one...yaay me.â
âRhea!â he snapped. âCan we ever have a conversation that doesnât end like this?â
She shrugged, completely unbothered.
âIâm chill. The problem is you.â
Silence.
Their mother shifted slightly, clearly debating whether to speak.
She rarely did.
Rhea always made sure of that.
StillâŚ
She tried.
âR-RheaâŚâ
Rheaâs head snapped toward her.
âWhat?â
âErr...i⌠Iâll serve your meal.â
Rhea inhaled slowly,
âDo whatever.â
Then she leaned forward slightly, eyes sharp.
âSo what is this important thing youâre yapping about?â she said flatly.
âIs someone dying soon? Who is it? Because thatâs the only good news Iâd like to hear right now.â
Evie stiffened.
Their fatherâs face darkened.
âWhat is wrong with you?â
âA lot,â she said, laughing under her breath.
âAre you ever serious?â
She tilted her head.
âAre you ever not exhausting?â
His hand slammed lightly against the table.
âYou never want to be involved! You think thisââ he gestured at her ââthis is life?â
She leaned back, crossing her arms.
âAnd youâre one to tell me"
âSomebody has to.â
âAnd you think youâre the chosen one?â she shot back, unimpressed.
His patience snapped slightly.
âAll this⌠all this you doââ he gestured again, sharper this time
ââthis madness⌠if only you knewâŚâ
He leaned forward.
âYou are the reason behind this announcement.â
Rhea blinked.
ââŚWhat the f**k?â
Then her expression hardened.
âWhy does it have to involve me?â
âOh, so now youâre interested?â
âOf course I am,â she snapped. âBecause every time you involve me, itâs never for me.â
She leaned forward, voice cutting.
âItâs always about fixing me. Changing me. Reshaping me into something that makes you look good.â
âIsnât that a good thing?â he fired back.
âNoâitâs not!â
Her hand slammed against the table as she stood up.
Evie flinched.
âItâs freaking not!â Rhea continued, voice rising.
âAll youâve ever tried to do is turn me into a version of myself that fits your imageââ
âItâs better than being this!â
That hit.
She laughedâbut there was no humor in it.
âWow.â
She stepped closer.
âInstead of trying to change me into a better person⌠have you ever tried seeing me as my own person?â
Silence.
âHave you?â she pressed.
His answer came cold.
âI haveâand itâs a terrible person you've got in there.â
That was it.
Something snapped.
She pulled the table cloth causing most of the dishes, plates and cups to all shatter to the groundâ
âRhea!â he shouted.
Her mother gasped, a hand flying to her chest.
Rheaâs chest rose and fell, her eyes blazing.
âf**k you.â
And she turned, storming upstairs.
âReeâ!â Evie stood immediately, rushing after her.
