With one final heave, Jack managed to clear enough of an opening in the rubble for me to crawl through. Gritting my teeth against the searing pain, I slowly dragged myself out inch by inch, my hands scrabbling for purchase on the jagged concrete. Jack reached in to help pull me the rest of the way, his strong arms much more careful than the desperate strength he'd used to create the escape route. As soon as I was free, he wrapped me in a tight embrace, mindful of my battered body. "I thought I'd lost you," he choked out, his voice thick with emotion.
