Chapter 3: First Day experience Anna Kenneth, right? Welcome to Airfield High, Mrs. Parker greeted her, standing up and extending her hand. Anna shook it and tried to return the smile, feeling her nervousness start to dissipate under Mrs. Parker’s reassuring gaze. Thank you, Anna replied. I’m so glad you’re here. We’ve heard great things about you, Mrs. Parker continued, motioning for Anna to take a seat. “You’re going to fit in just fine here.” Anna nodded, still a bit unsure, but it was comforting to hear those words. Now,” Mrs. Parker continued, picking up a folder from her desk. Let’s go over a few things. I’ll show you around the school a bit, and then I’ll take you to your homeroom. You’ll be in my class for the year, so if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to come to me. Anna listened intently as Mrs. Parker went over her schedule, explaining some of the subjects she’d be taking and the activities she might be interested in. It wasn’t overwhelming—Mrs. Parker had a way of making everything sound manageable, even exciting. After a brief discussion, Mrs. Parker stood up. Why don’t I walk you to the classroom now? It’ll give you a chance to see a bit of the school. Anna followed her out of the office, and they walked down the long hallway, past more groups of students. Mrs. Parker pointed out key locations—the library, the gym, and the cafeteria—explaining their importance with the ease of someone who had been here for years. As they approached the classroom, Anna could hear the low hum of students talking inside. Her heart raced for a moment, nerves creeping back up. But Mrs. Parker gave her a reassuring smile before opening the door. Here we are, she said softly, holding the door open for Anna. Mrs. Parker opened the door and led Anna inside with a final smile. The room went quiet as soon as they stepped in. All eyes turned to them, and Anna felt a familiar rush of anxiety. She straightened her back, determined to make a good impression. Good morning, everyone, Ms. Parker began, her voice loud enough to get everyone’s attention. This is Anna Bennett, our new student. She’s joined us this year on a scholarship. I hope you’ll all make her feel welcome. Anna felt a little shame because of the curious gazes of her new classmates. She offered a small smile, waving nervously. Ms. Parker then gestured toward an empty seat in the middle row, beside a girl with bright red hair and a friendly expression. Anna, why don’t you take a seat next to Jade? Jade will help you get settled in. Relieved to have a designated spot, Anna quickly moved to her seat. Jade smiled warmly as she sat down. Hey, I’m Jade. Nice to meet you, she whispered. Nice to meet you too, Anna replied, grateful for the friendly welcome. She glanced around the classroom, trying to get a sense of her new environment. Her eyes traveled over the various groups of students—some students were leaning back in their chairs, whispering and giggling, while others were hunched over their notebooks. As she was still looking around, she noticed a boy sitting near the back of the room. He had a relaxed posture, one arm spread over the back of his chair casually. His dark hair fell perfectly around his face, and his eyes were a striking shade of blue. There was something almost magnetic about him, a confidence that seemed to proceed naturally. She immediately recognized him from the whispers she had overheard in the hallway earlier that morning. This must be Kendrick—the boy everyone was talking about. As if sensing her gaze, Kendrick looked up and met her eyes. Anna’s heart skipped a beat. His expression was calm, but there was an intensity in his gaze that made her look away quickly. She felt her cheeks grow warm and focused her attention back on Ms. Parker, who was writing something on the board. Careful, Jade whispered with a discerning smile. That’s Kendrick Hart. The most popular guy in school and—well, you know, basically every girl’s dream. Anna’s heart raced a little faster. Oh, I wasn’t—I mean, I wasn’t staring. Just… curious, I guess. Jade laughed softly. Don’t worry, you’re not the first. But if you’re interested, you should know he’s always surrounded by his group—his best friend Gary, and, of course, Heather. Jade rolled her eyes slightly at the mention of Heather’s name. Anna’s curiosity increased. She glanced back at Kendrick, noticing the blonde girl beside him, Heather. She was beautiful, with a kind of effortless elegance that made her stand out. Heather seemed to be talking to Kendrick, her eyes flickering toward Anna occasionally. Anna felt a slight chill. She got the distinct feeling that Heather was not a fan of hers. Anna focused on the lesson, trying to push the awkward feeling away. She started taking notes and tried to keep her mind off the strange looks and whispers she felt around her. As the morning went on, she found herself slowly relaxing into the rhythm of the class. During lunch, Jade invited Anna to join her and a few other students in the cafeteria. Anna was more than happy to accept, relieved to have made a friend so quickly. As they made their way through the bustling halls, Jade filled in on the school gossip, telling her about the different groups. As they reached the cafeteria, Anna felt more nervous again. She followed Jade to a table near the back, where a small group of students sat chatting and laughing. Jade introduced her, and they welcomed Anna with smiles and friendly nods. She began to feel like maybe she could find a place here after all. But as she sat down, she noticed Kendrick and his friends at a table not far away. Heather was sitting close to him, leaning in and speaking softly. Occasionally, Heather would glance over at Anna, her expression unreadable. Kendrick, on the other hand, seemed relaxed, but his eyes kept drifting toward Anna’s table, almost as if he were trying to catch her eye. Anna tried to focus on the conversation at her table, but her thoughts kept wandering back to Kendrick. She had never been the type to develop crushes easily, but there was something about him that just seemed to draw her in. She felt a strange mix of excitement and unease. She didn’t want to be just another girl who fell for the most popular guy in school, but she couldn’t help the way her heart sped up whenever she caught him looking her way. The rest of the day passed quickly, and soon it was time to head home. As she stepped outside, the cool breeze brushed against her face, and she felt a strange mix of emotions—nervousness, curiosity, and a hint of excitement. Her first day had been a day to remember, filled with the memories of new faces and unexpected moments. She knew she had a lot to prove and many challenges ahead, but for the first time in a long while, she felt a spark of hope. Whatever happened next, she was ready.
