Sam's heart was racing as she looked into Jake's eyes. She hadn't expected him to ask her to start over, to get to know each other again. A part of her was thrilled at the prospect, while another part was warning her to be cautious.
"I don't know, Jake," Sam said, trying to sound nonchalant despite the butterflies in her stomach.
Jake's face fell, but he quickly recovered. "I understand. It's a lot to ask, I know. But I feel like we've both changed, grown as people. I'd love the chance to get to know you again, see if there's still something between us."
Sam's mind was racing. She didn't know what to say, what to do. Part of her wanted to agree, to see where things might go between them. Another part was screaming at her to run, to protect herself from getting hurt again.
"I need some time to think about it," Sam said finally, trying to sound calm.
Jake nodded, a small smile on his face. "I understand. Take all the time you need. I'll be here when you're ready."
As Sam walked away from Jake, she couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement mixed with trepidation. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew she couldn't ignore the feelings that were stirring inside her.
Over the next few days, Sam found herself thinking about Jake more and more. She'd see him around town, and her heart would skip a beat. She'd wonder what he was doing, who he was with, and what he was thinking.
One evening, Sam decided to take a walk along the river that ran through Willow Creek. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the water. As she walked, she felt a sense of peace wash over her.
Suddenly, she heard a voice behind her. "Hey, Sam."
She turned to see Jake standing there, a smile on his face. "Hey," she said, her heart racing.
Jake walked up to her, and they stood there, looking out at the river. "I was thinking," Jake said, "maybe we could grab dinner sometime this week? Just as friends, of course."
Sam's heart skipped a beat. She knew that dinner with Jake wouldn't be just as friends, but she couldn't deny the attraction she felt towards him.
"Okay," Sam said finally, trying to sound casual. "Dinner sounds nice."
Jake grinned, and Sam's heart melted. "Great. I'll pick you up at 7?"
As Sam nodded, she knew she was taking a step into the unknown. She didn't know what would happen between her and Jake, but she was willing to take the risk.
