"Family Matters"

309 Words
As Sam and Jake's relationship continued to blossom, Sam found herself spending more time with Jake's daughter, Emma. She was a sweet and precocious kid, and Sam adored her. One day, Jake asked Sam to join them for a family dinner. Sam was a little nervous, but she agreed. She knew that this was a big step, and she wanted to make a good impression. As they sat down to dinner, Sam felt a sense of unease. She wasn't sure what to expect, and she was worried about making mistakes. But Emma quickly put her at ease, chatting with her about school and her friends. Jake's eyes met Sam's, and he smiled, reassuring her. As they ate, Sam felt herself relaxing. She was enjoying the conversation, and she was starting to feel like part of the family. After dinner, they sat down to watch a movie. Emma snuggled up close to Sam, and Jake put his arm around them both. Sam felt a sense of contentment wash over her. This was what she had been missing, she realized. A sense of family, of belonging. As the movie ended, Jake walked Sam home. "Thanks for tonight," he said, his voice low. "It meant a lot to me." Sam smiled, feeling happy. "I had a great time," she said. "Emma's a wonderful kid." Jake nodded, his eyes shining with pride. "She's the best thing that's ever happened to me." Sam's heart melted at the look on his face. She knew that Jake was a good father, and she admired him for it. As they stood outside her door, Jake leaned in to kiss her. "I'm glad you're in my life, Sam," he said, his voice husky. Sam's heart skipped a beat. She was glad too, she realized. Glad to be part of Jake's life, and glad to be part of Emma's.
