The Hidden Truth

371 Words
The quiet of the manor was usually peaceful, but tonight it felt heavy. Alexander had been called away for an emergency meeting, leaving me alone in the vast house. Curiosity, a dangerous thing in a place like this, led me toward his private study. The door was slightly ajar. I knew I shouldn't enter, but I couldn't help myself. The room smelled like him—leather, old books, and that expensive sandalwood. As I turned to leave, my eyes caught a folder on his desk with my father's name on it. I opened it, expecting to see debt records. Instead, I saw a series of checks. Alexander hadn't just bought the debt; he had been paying my father's medical bills and sister's school fees in secret for months—long before he ever approached me with the contract. "Looking for something, Bliss?" I spun around, my heart nearly stopping. Alexander stood in the doorway, his silhouette tall and imposing against the hall light. He didn't look angry; he looked... vulnerable. "You've been helping my family for a long time," I whispered, holding the papers. "Why? Why the contract? Why make me think it was just a cold business deal?" He walked into the room, closing the distance between us. He took the folder from my hands and set it aside, but he didn't pull away. He took both of my hands in his, his grip firm but incredibly gentle. "Because I didn't want you to feel like you owed me your life, Bliss," he confessed, his voice thick with emotion. "I wanted to give you a reason to be near me that didn't feel like charity. I thought if it was a contract, you'd at least look at me as an equal, even if you hated me for it." "I don't hate you, Alexander," I said, my voice trembling. "Good," he murmured, leaning down until our noses brushed. "Because I’ve spent my whole life buying things I wanted. But you... I realized very quickly that you're the only thing I actually need." In the dim light of the study, the lie of the contract finally shattered, leaving only the truth of how much we had come to mean to each other.
