The Midnight Transformation

Sterling Manor was a palace of glass and gold, but it felt cold until I stepped inside. After a long afternoon of being fitted for clothes I could never afford, I stood before the full-length mirror in my new suite. The dress was a soft, shimmering silk that hugged my curves and made my skin glow under the chandelier light. For the first time in years, I didn't look like a girl drowning in debt; I looked like a queen. A soft knock at the door made my heart jump. "Come in," I whispered. The door swung open, and Alexander stood there. He was dressed in a perfectly tailored tuxedo, looking every bit the powerful billionaire the world feared. He began to say something about punctuality, but the words died in his throat the moment he saw me. The icy look in his eyes cracked. For a heartbeat, he wasn't a "monster" or a boss. He was just a man who couldn't take his eyes off the woman in front of him. "Bliss," he breathed, his voice dropping an octave, sounding thick with an emotion he tried to hide. He walked toward me slowly, the scent of expensive sandalwood filling the space between us. He stopped just inches away. I expected a cold command, but instead, he reached out. His fingers were surprisingly warm as he gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to my chest. "You look... breathtaking," he murmured, his gaze falling to my lips before snapping back to my eyes. "The world won't have to pretend to believe I'm in love with you tonight. They’ll see it written on my face." My breath hitched. "Is this part of the act, Alexander?" He didn't pull away. Instead, he took my hand and pressed a lingering, soft kiss to my knuckles. His eyes stayed locked on mine, intense and sweet. "Tonight, there are no acts. Just stay close to me." As he led me down the grand staircase, his hand resting protectively on the small of my back, I realized the danger wasn't just in the contract. The real danger was how easily my heart was starting to beat for the man who was supposed to be my enemy.
