Chapter 6 - The Latte and Agreement

The café hummed with the soft sound of steaming milk. Maya stood at the bar counter, her gaze flickering to the wall clock every few moments. Each tick echoed in her mind, a reminder that her shift would end soon—6 PM. “ Time to go back, babe,” Sasha called, her voice breaking the calm as she slipped off her apron and tossed it onto a nearby chair. “ The last customer,” Maya replied, a smile tugging at her lips as she subtly nodded toward a lone figure seated at a table. Sasha’s eyes followed Maya's gaze, and her jaw dropped. “Seriously? He is the one who ordered the drinks?” Maya raised an eyebrow, confusion knitting her brow. “What’s wrong with that guy?” “ You really don’t know who he is?” Sasha whispered, her voice barely containing her disbelief. Maya shook her head, focusing on pouring the latte. “Nope.” “ That's our Beta, Lucas. Alpha Ryan’s official,” Sasha whispered, urgency threading through her words. Maya finished pouring the latte and glanced at Lucas. “Wow, he has good looks, though,” she said, a hint of admiration in her tone. “ I know, right? Just imagine if the Beta of the pack is this good, how hot will our Head Alpha be?” Sasha leaned against the counter, her eyes sparkling with mischief. Maya chuckled, her nerves easing. “Shuuuu, if he heard you, he would eat you right now.” Sasha burst into laughter, a loud, infectious sound that made Lucas turn his head. He stood, moving toward the counter with a relaxed smile. “Is my latte ready?” he asked. “ Yes, it’s done. Here are your drinks, Beta,” Maya said, her heart racing as she handed him the cup. Lucas raised an eyebrow, glancing at Sasha, who stood there with her mouth slightly agape. “Thank you, Maya,” he replied, taking the cup with a warm smile. Sasha blinked, finally coming back to reality. “How does he know your name?” she asked, curiosity piqued. “ Might see my name tag,” Maya said, tilting her head to show the small badge pinned to her apron. They exchanged glances, and the clock ticked on. Both of them hurried to store their things in the locker room, the tension of the day melting away. “It’s already 6:30 PM, babe. We need to go faster,” Sasha urged, pulling her hair into a tight bun. “Yeah, I’m done, girl.” Maya glanced at herself in the mirror. She wore high-waisted blue jeans, sneakers, and a black top that hugged her figure. The high ponytail framed her face perfectly, making her feel simple yet beautiful. As they stepped out of the locker room, Sasha pinched Maya’s hand. “Oh my goddess, our Alpha is here!” Maya’s heart raced as she looked up to see Alpha Ryan seated at a table with Lucas and other officials. His gaze caught hers, and an unexpected chill ran down her spine. He was watching her intently, his eyes roaming from her head to her toes. “Shhh,” Maya whispered, trying to shake off the sudden anxiety. Ryan's piercing gaze made her feel exposed, and she quickly looked away, her steps trembling. Sasha nudged her, trying to break the tension. “What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Before Maya could respond, a tall figure strode into the café, and her heart sank. Alerick. “ Maya,” he said, standing directly in front of her, his voice cold like steel. She froze, torn between the urge to run to him and the instinct to protect her heart. Sasha shot Alerick a disgusted look as he continued. “Go back,” he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. Maya didn’t move, her eyes locked on him. She wanted to hug him, to feel the familiarity of his arms around her, but the weight of Sasha’s disapproval held her back. “ Come on, we’re leaving,” Sasha said, grabbing Maya’s arm and tugging her away. Once outside, Sasha turned on her. “What does that mean? The way you looked at that scumbag!” “ Which one?” Maya asked, bewildered. “ The one who just walked in! Alerick!” Sasha exclaimed, frustration spilling from her. “ Maya, please,” she continued, her voice softer but firm. “You said he ditched you the other day.” “ But I... I love him,” Maya admitted, her gaze dropping to the ground as tears threatened to spill. “ Whatever it is, he is still my Alpha, and I have to give him all the respect,” Maya said, her voice barely above a whisper. Sasha crossed her arms, her expression a mix of anger and concern. “Whatever. Just don’t go back to him.” Maya's heart sank. She knew Sasha meant well, but Alerick was more than just her past; he was a part of her. Inside the café, Alerick took a seat across from Ryan, greeting him with a dark smile. “Good day, Alpha Ryan.” Ryan sipped his coffee, unfazed. “You too, Alpha Alerick.” Gamma Vans slid a file across the table, the crisp sound of paper rustling filling the air. “I’ve already made a decision. I’m agreeing to send some of my wolf fighters to your pack. But there are some rules you have to agree to and sign,” Ryan said, his voice steady and authoritative. Alerick frowned as he scanned the agreement. “What is this about? Any members from the Blue Moon Pack are free to marry their mate? If their mate comes from the Silver Blood Pack, there will be no obligations?” Ryan nodded. “Your pack’s rule is no outsiders, meaning no other pack members can mate with your pack members. I find that unfair and want to change it to strengthen our relationship.” The room fell silent as Alerick processed the new terms. Ryan maintained his calm demeanor, crossing his legs and watching Alerick's reaction. “If you don’t agree, there will be no issue on my side. We can just withdraw this agreement,” Ryan added, his smirk barely concealed. Alerick’s expression shifted, a flicker of desperation crossing his face. “No... no... I’m totally fine with this. I agree,” he said, forcing a smile as he reread the agreement. He had no other choices than agree because his pack going through some chaotic situations, Ryan's help at this time really will strengthen his pack. Ryan’s officials exchanged surprised glances, the tension palpable. They all knew the stakes involved. While Alerick continued to peruse the document, Ryan’s smirk widened. He could sense victory on the horizon, a small but significant win for his pack. As Ryan drove toward the pack house with Lucas. Vans and Harry followed in another car. The silence in the vehicle was thick, and Ryan stared out the window, lost in thought. Lucas broke the stillness. “Hmmm, guess someone caught our Alpha’s attention,” he teased, nudging Ryan with an elbow. Ryan turned, his brow furrowed. “What do you mean?” “ Seems like that Omega did something to you, huh?” Lucas said, a playful smirk curling his lips. “ Stop blabbering, Lucas,” Ryan replied, irritation creeping into his tone. “ Then what’s with the sudden changes in the agreement? Why add that clause?” Lucas pressed, curiosity winning out. Ryan paused, weighing his words carefully. “That has nothing to do with Maya.” “ Oh, really? I saw the way you looked at her, buddy,” Lucas shot back, his eyes glinting with mischief. “ Yes, I like her, but not in the way you think. She’s innocent, and there’s something about her that my wolf wants to protect. I’m just listening to my wolf. And you all know that I’m still waiting for my mate. My fated mate. Nothing can change that,” Ryan said firmly. Lucas nodded, relief washing over him. “As long as you remember she is Alerick’s mate,” he reminded, the weight of the situation settling back in. Ryan’s jaw tightened, a low growl escaping him. “That’s a complication I didn’t ask for,” he muttered, the drive growing tense as they neared the pack house. The stakes were high, and the air buzzed with unspoken tension. Maya’s face flashed in Ryan’s mind, her warm smile juxtaposed against the cold reality of their world. He knew that navigating this territory would be anything but simple.
