Chapter 12—What she can’t say❤️

1022 Words
Elena stood alone in the staff corridor long after Charles Vale left. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. Her fingers were still curled around the transfer papers. Her mind was racing, looping one impossible thought: If she stayed… Adrian would be hurt. If she left… she would be hurt. There was no outcome where someone didn’t bleed. Kara found her first. She took one look at Elena’s pale face and ripped the envelope out of her hands. “What is this? Who gave you this? Why do you look like you saw the Devil and he audited your taxes?” Elena swallowed. “Kara… it was Adrian’s father.” Kara’s eyes widened. “Oh hell.” Elena nodded numbly. “He wants me gone.” Kara flipped through the transfer papers, her expression darkening. “This is outrageous. Illegal. Evil. Very on-brand for the rich and heartless. Elena, you can’t let him do this.” “What choice do I have?” Elena whispered. Kara put a hand on her arm. “The Adrian I saw during that elevator ride? He will burn the building down for you.” Elena shook her head. “That’s the problem.” ⸻ Meanwhile: Adrian’s Crumbling Focus Across the Towers, Adrian tried—and failed—to work. Every instinct said something was wrong. He felt it. A tightness in his chest he couldn’t shake. A weight pressing on his sternum. Marcus knocked gently. “Sir… are you planning on staring at that wall all day, or should I cancel lunch too?” Adrian didn’t look at him. “Something’s happening.” “Define ‘something.’” “I don’t know.” His voice was strained. “But I can feel it.” Marcus opened his mouth to respond, but his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, froze, then looked at Adrian very carefully. “Sir… HR just processed a transfer request for a staff member in the Public Tower.” Adrian’s heart dropped. “What staff member?” Marcus hesitated. “Her name is—” “Elena,” Adrian breathed. Marcus nodded. Adrian shot to his feet, breath short. “No,” he said. “No. She didn’t request a transfer.” “According to HR she did,” Marcus said quietly. Adrian was already heading for the elevator. He didn’t plan. He didn’t think. He just moved. Because he knew. He knew his father had done something. ⸻ Elena’s Decision Elena sat on the edge of a service step near the loading docks, staring at the letter. Her chest was tight. Her eyes stung, but she refused to cry. If Adrian found out what his father had done, there would be consequences— messy, destructive, dangerous consequences. He would blame himself. He would punish himself. And she couldn’t do that to him. Kara sat beside her. “So what are you going to do?” Kara asked gently. Elena forced a breath. “I’m going to accept the transfer.” Kara’s eyes snapped wide. “What? Elena, no—” “It’s the only way to protect him.” “You are not his bodyguard!” “No,” Elena whispered. “But I care about him. And Charles knows how to hurt him in ways I can’t even imagine.” Kara looked at her for a long moment, then sighed. “You’re doing the noble heartbreaking thing, aren’t you?” Elena didn’t answer. That was answer enough. ⸻ The Confrontation She Didn’t Expect She was still sitting there when the door burst open. “Elena!” Her heart jumped violently. Adrian. Out of breath. Eyes wild. Tie crooked. Suit jacket unbuttoned like he’d sprinted the whole way. Kara stood, muttering, “And that’s my cue to leave,” and disappeared inside. Adrian walked straight to her, dropping to a knee so they were eye level. “Elena,” he said, voice raw, “please tell me you didn’t request a transfer.” Elena’s throat closed. She tried to hide the letter, but Adrian gently took her hand and pulled it into view. When he saw it, something inside him broke. “Elena…” His voice was almost a whisper. “What happened?” Her chest tightened painfully. “I—I just thought maybe it was better—” “No,” he said immediately. “No. Someone forced you.” “Adrian—” “Was it a manager?” he demanded. “A director? HR? Tell me who it was.” She shook her head quickly. “It doesn’t matter—” “It does,” he said fiercely. “It matters to me.” Her eyes burned. Because she wanted to tell him. God, she wanted to. But she could still hear Charles’s voice. He does not need your apology. He needs your absence. She looked away. “It’s for the best.” “No,” Adrian said. “It’s not.” He put a hand on her cheek, gentle, trembling. “Elena… why won’t you tell me the truth?” Her chest cracked open. She whispered, “Because it will only hurt you.” Adrian’s breath caught. “Elena,” he said. “Losing you is what hurts me.” She closed her eyes, heart breaking. “I won’t let you throw away your future because of me,” she said. Adrian’s jaw clenched. “My future stopped mattering the moment you walked away.” Her eyes snapped open— —and for the first time, she saw him not as a CEO-in-training, not as a billionaire’s son… …but as a man who was completely, devastatingly in love with her. She couldn’t breathe. She wanted to say the words. She wanted to reach for him. But Charles Vale’s threat hovered over them like a blade. All she could manage was a choked whisper: “I’m sorry.” Adrian stared at her like his world was collapsing. “Elena… don’t do this.” She stood slowly, tears finally breaking free. “I have to,” she whispered. And she walked away— leaving Adrian standing in the doorway, shattered.
