CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR Broderick shrieked as he felt a terrible pain at the base of his neck. He released the reins of his horse and instinctively and protectively grabbed his neck. He lost his balance and tumbled from his horse to the ground, landing painfully on his left shoulder. The pain lanced through his body with abandon, causing him to suck in his breath and hold it. It was all he could do to try not to move. And then the pain was gone. A strong burning sensation overwhelmed his palm. He lay there on the road, fearful to move at all lest the pain return.
