CHAPTER EIGHT “Gaetano is dying,” Justus said somberly. A great murmur ran through the gathering of priests. “This is a sad time for us, but we must hold off on our grieving. This council must vote for a new leader. As we all know, there are many pressing matters that cannot be ignored. Morell and Rainor are well known among all of you. We will take the day to deliberate between the two and convene tomorrow. You are dismissed.” Everyone except Justus and Morell left. The two sat in silence until the room was completely empty and Justus made sure there wasn’t anyone hanging around in the hallway. “You know this will be a difficult vote for the council,” Justus remarked. Morell shrugged. “I do not think so.” The council room was large but plain. A long rectangular table sat in the middle
