The television hummed softly in the empty room, still playing the seemingly endless show Claudia had brought to watch with me, and I was still enthralled. She'd left half ann hour ago, saying Adam would be home soon and that I should get ready for bed. I hadn't moved from the couch in his living room, my eyes fixed on the people that played out their lives for all to see. I barely heard the sound of the front door, the soft click echoing through the house - but the swirl of gold pulled my eyes away from the screen. Adam stood in the shadows, his eyes dark and his features tight, like he was angry. He watched me, the TV's light bouncing off his skin and he titled his head. I pulled the blanket from his bed around me, almost as if "I wasn't serious when I said you couldn't sleep
