Chapter Five: Safety

793 Words
"There are no Covens in Partos. They were all killed." I stood so quickly, that the tray on my lap collided with the floor and the juice spilled everywhere, glass shattering. He held up both hands facing me, his face twisted in worry. "You have a home here, Miranda." His voice came out strained, almost begging me to believe him. I did. I don't know why. All the things were telling me I should have been dead right now. My Coven was gone, meaning there were no Witches in this country to have restarted it after it fell. I could move to search for others, but my connection to Mother was strongest on the lands where I was born. I wouldn't go back to the Grounds alive. I should have felt so lost. Instead, I was being offered a home among an Alpha's Pack. He treated me kindly and saved my life. He gave me a sense of safety I couldn't describe, and I didn't want to leave. He hadn't killed me when he had every right to. Alpha's were very notorious for their deadly punishments of trespassers. Instead, he was reassuring me and offering me a home! I've repaid him by.....oh my, the floor! Without thinking, I pulled my dress over my head, ignoring the screams of pain from my shoulder and I dropped to my knees, my leg falling beside me when it wouldn't bend properly. I hurriedly gathered the large pieces of glass onto the tray and sponged the liquid. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," I muttered again and again the whole time until two warm hands were wrapped around my wrists. They pulled my hands up and made me release the soaking gown. The warmth of them. I just want to be engulfed in it. I found myself being pulled into it, my hope being answered. I felt strong arms slide across my back and pull me impossibly close to a solid frame. Adam whispered in my ear. "Shhh little Mira. I'll handle it." The feeling of his warmth and his breath on my neck made my brain fog. Without thinking, I reached up to grab around his neck and pulled myself up, wrapping my legs around his waist, trying to get as much warmth as I could. He moved one of his hands carefully, and then I felt him move. I wasn't sure where, but the next thing I knew, I was being placed on a very soft surface, surrounded by a gentle flowery fragrance that soothed, but the warmth was disappearing. "No!" I cried as my eyes snapped open to see I was in a bedroom of some kind. It was neutral in colour and bare besides a bed, a bedside table, a desk and a cupboard in the far corner. Adam's hand was still on my arm, it was the only place I wasn't cold. "Please, you're so warm. I just..." I bit my lip and closed my eyes. "I'd feel safer if you stayed." I didn't open my eyes until I heard a heavy exhale and looked up to see Adam slipping off his shoes and socks before sitting on the edge of the bed beside me. "Thank you," I whispered. "I won't ask again." He leaned forward, his fists resting on either side of my arms, encasing me in the blanket he tucked me under, pining them. He stared at me with gold-glistening brown orbs, looked pained for a second and leant forward. I yelped, then silenced myself quickly when I felt the heat. His lips were pressed against my forehead, and he grumbled something I couldn't make out through the brain fog his touch caused. I think it was Welcome Home. He leaned back, pulled his sweater over his head, tossed it to the ground and pulled the covers back to slide in next to me on the bed. I realised then it was way too small for both of us. He was taller than me, his feet just dangling over the edge before he pulled them up, meeting my legs, he softly guided them to bend and wrapped both his arms around me. Scooping me from the bed, he pulled me flush against his body, and I was suddenly aware that I'd discarded my only form of clothing besides a pair of white panties. As if hearing my thoughts, a husky whisper sounded. "I'll get you something before you wake up. Rest little Miranda. You're safe now." The warmth enveloped me. I rolled and buried my face in it, Adam adjusted us into a comfier position and his thumb absently circled my shoulder soothingly. "Thank you, Adam." I hummed and found myself drifting into a sound sleep I hadn't had in years.
