Episode 8: The Man in the Shadows

1767 Words
Ariana couldn't move. The man standing in the doorway slowly stepped forward. The dim light from the television finally reached his face. Her breath disappeared. “Uncle Daniel?” For a moment, nobody spoke. Daniel Hayes looked exactly as Ariana remembered him—except older. His hair had turned slightly gray around the edges. His face carried the same familiar expression he had worn during every family gathering. The man who had bought her birthday presents. The man who had attended her father's funeral. The man who had hugged her mother while she cried. Ariana took a step backward. “No.” Daniel smiled faintly. “You always were a smart girl.” Leon moved in front of Ariana. “Stay behind me.” Daniel's eyes shifted toward him. “Still protecting her, Leon?” Ariana's heart began pounding. Leon knew him. Of course he did. Everyone knew everyone. Everyone had secrets. Everyone had been lying. Ariana grabbed Leon's arm. “Who is he to you?” Leon didn't answer. Daniel laughed softly. “She deserves the truth, doesn't she?” Leon turned toward him. “Don't.” “Oh, now you care about the truth?” Ariana looked between them. “What is happening?” Daniel walked farther into the room. The hidden underground chamber suddenly felt much smaller. “You've done well, Ariana,” he said. “You found the letters.” “Were you the one sending them?” Daniel smiled. “Wouldn't you like to know?” Ariana stepped forward. “My father is dead because of someone.” Daniel's expression changed slightly. “You still believe that?” “What do you mean?” “Your father made many enemies.” Leon clenched his fists. “Stop talking.” Daniel ignored him. “Your father wasn't the innocent man you remember.” Ariana felt anger rise inside her. “You don't get to talk about him.” “I knew him better than anyone.” “You were his brother-in-law.” “No.” Daniel looked at Ariana. “I was much more than that.” Leon suddenly moved. “Enough.” Daniel's eyes became cold. “You're afraid she'll remember.” Ariana froze. “Remember what?” Silence. The question hung in the room. Leon looked away. Daniel smiled again. “There it is.” Ariana turned toward Leon. “What is he talking about?” Leon remained silent. “Leon!” Daniel slowly walked toward the old television. “You have been asking the wrong questions, Ariana.” She stared at him. “What questions should I be asking?” Daniel looked directly into her eyes. “Why were you taken?” Her body went cold. The room seemed to disappear. The security footage. The two children. Her. Leon. A man whose face she couldn't see. Ariana shook her head. “My father was trying to find out who took us.” Daniel's smile disappeared. “Was he?” Leon stepped forward. “Don't listen to him.” Ariana looked at Leon. “Tell me he's lying.” Leon didn't answer. Her heart cracked. “Tell me.” Daniel gave a quiet laugh. “You see? That's the problem with Leon. He never lies completely.” Leon turned toward Daniel. “You were there that night.” The smile vanished from Daniel's face. Ariana looked at him. “What?” Leon continued. “You were at the railway station.” Daniel's jaw tightened. “You have no proof.” “But she does.” Leon pointed toward Ariana. Ariana stared at them. “I don't remember anything.” Daniel's expression softened. “Exactly.” Something about his voice frightened her more than his words. He sounded almost pleased. Ariana backed away. “What happened to my memories?” Daniel didn't answer. Instead, he looked toward the wall of compartments. “Your father should have destroyed this place.” Ariana followed his gaze. “What is this room?” Daniel smiled. “The beginning.” Leon immediately turned toward Ariana. “We need to leave.” “No.” His eyes widened slightly. “Ariana.” “No!” Her voice echoed through the underground chamber. “I am tired of running.” She turned toward Daniel. “You came here because you wanted something.” Daniel said nothing. “So tell me.” He studied her. Then he slowly reached into his coat. Leon immediately stepped in front of her. Daniel stopped. “Relax.” He pulled out an envelope. Ariana recognized the handwriting. Her father's. “No.” Daniel held it up. “Letter number 203.” Ariana stared at the envelope. “That compartment was empty.” “I know.” “Then how do you have it?” Daniel's eyes moved toward Leon. “Ask your protector.” Leon went still. Ariana looked at him. “Leon?” He slowly shook his head. “I've never seen that letter.” Daniel laughed. “Of course not.” Ariana reached for the envelope. Leon grabbed her wrist. “Don't take it.” She looked at him. “Why?” “Because that's exactly what he wants.” Daniel's voice became colder. “Let her decide.” Ariana pulled her hand away. Then she walked toward Daniel. Leon followed. “Ariana, stop.” She ignored him. Daniel handed her the envelope. For several seconds, she couldn't open it. Her father's handwriting was unmistakable. Her name was written across the front. For Ariana — when Daniel finally finds you. Her hands began shaking. She looked up. Daniel's smile had disappeared. Leon saw the words too. For the first time, Ariana saw real shock in his eyes. She opened the envelope. Inside was a single sheet of paper. She began reading. My dearest Ariana, If Daniel is standing in front of you, then everything I feared has finally happened. Ariana's breathing stopped. Daniel took a step forward. She continued reading. Do not believe him when he tells you that I was not innocent. I made mistakes, but I never stopped trying to protect you. Her eyes moved across the page. Daniel was there the night you disappeared. Ariana slowly looked up. Daniel's face was expressionless. She continued. But he was not alone. Leon whispered, “Ariana…” She read the next line. The person who planned everything was someone you would never suspect. Ariana's fingers tightened. Someone who sat beside me at the dinner table. Someone who called me family. The letter ended with one final sentence. And Ariana... Leon has been hiding the most dangerous part of the truth. The underground room became silent. Ariana lowered the paper. Leon looked at her. Daniel smiled again. “Now we're getting somewhere.” Ariana turned toward Leon. “What is he hiding?” Leon didn't speak. “Leon.” His eyes closed. Daniel slowly walked backward toward the doorway. “Ask him about the night your father came to save you.” Ariana's voice shook. “What happened?” Leon opened his eyes. “He died because of me.” Everything stopped. Ariana stared at him. “What?” Leon looked completely broken. “Your father wasn't supposed to die that night.” Daniel laughed quietly. “Finally.” Leon ignored him. “He came to save us.” Ariana remembered the footage. The abandoned building. Two children. Her father's desperate attempt to find them. Leon continued. “He found us. He got you out first.” Ariana's eyes filled with tears. “And then?” “I was still inside.” Her heart began pounding. Leon looked down. “Your father went back for me.” Ariana couldn't breathe. “And that was when they came.” Daniel's smile disappeared. Leon finally looked directly at Ariana. “Your father died because he refused to leave me behind.” Ariana stepped backward. “No.” “It was my fault.” “No.” “If he hadn't gone back—” “Stop!” Leon fell silent. Ariana covered her mouth. Her father. He had returned for Leon. He had sacrificed himself. All these years, Ariana had believed her father died in a car accident. But he had died protecting them. Protecting her. And protecting Leon. Daniel suddenly clapped slowly. “What a beautiful version of the story.” Leon turned sharply. “Shut up.” Daniel smiled. “But it's still missing one important detail.” Ariana looked at him. “What detail?” Daniel pointed toward Leon. “He didn't tell you who was inside that building with you.” Leon went completely still. Ariana noticed. Her heart began racing again. “There was someone else?” Daniel smiled. “Oh, yes.” Ariana looked at Leon. “Who?” Leon didn't answer. Daniel took another step backward. “Ariana, you're asking the wrong person.” Then he turned toward the dark passage behind him. Ariana frowned. “What?” Daniel smiled. “Because the third child is still alive.” Ariana froze. Leon whispered— “No.” Daniel disappeared into the darkness. “Wait!” Ariana ran after him. Leon grabbed her arm. “Don't!” “Let me go!” “He's trying to lead you somewhere.” “He knows the truth!” “So do I!” Ariana turned toward him. “Then tell me!” Leon released her arm. For a moment, his face looked exhausted. Defeated. Then he reached into his pocket. And pulled out something small. A photograph. Ariana took it. It showed three children. Ariana recognized herself. Thirteen years old. Leon stood beside her. And between them— A little girl. Ariana stared at the unfamiliar face. “Who is she?” Leon looked toward the photograph. His voice was barely a whisper. “Your sister.” Ariana's world went silent. “My…” She couldn't finish the sentence. Leon looked at her. “The sister you were told never existed.” A loud sound suddenly echoed through the underground passage. BANG! The hidden door slammed shut. The lights went out. And Ariana's phone vibrated. A new message appeared on the screen. LETTER 204 IS WAITING. IF YOU WANT TO FIND YOUR SISTER, COME ALONE. Ariana slowly looked at Leon. Then at the photograph. Then back at the message. For twenty-three years, she had believed she was an only child. But now she had a sister. A sister hidden from her entire life. And somewhere in the darkness beyond the house— someone was waiting for her. To be continued...
