It was one thing spending years being a mystery to the world, almost as if you did not exist, merely a myth. But it was a totally different story when you try to understand your own existence and finding answers to your past.
Running into David Botha and his makeshift family flipped a switch in her head, and she found herself panicking while trying to remember some details about her life.
The one person who could answer her questions was in a coma, but even if he was wide awake and standing in front of her, Jorge would never tell her what she wanted to know.
She had already confronted Logan with many truths, this one was not for him, he could never find out. Ironically, she was also in the dark and needed to solve the puzzle around the time she left for London.
There was only one other person she was comfortable in discussing that part of her life with, well, the only person who knew everything.
The drive to Kyle David's was nerve-wracking, especially at the thought of journalists lurking around his place, to her surprise, there were no journalists. But it still did not ease her nerves.
She found Kyle working out at the gym on the ground floor and she plopped down on a camp chair, and sat there quietly while watching him lifting weights.
"If it is not my favourite lawyer!" He mocked, sitting up straight, sweat dripping on his naked chest. "What do I owe this surprise visit?"
"Answers," MJ said bluntly. "The truth."
"What do you want to know?"
"David Botha. Back then, he was sent by Jorge to look for me."
Kyle nodded, draping a towel around his neck. "I remember."
MJ gulped. "Did he ever report back?" She asked.
Kyle Davids stared at her intently and then stood up from the bench and grabbed an extra camp chair, sitting right in front of her with a bottle of water. "David reported back to Jorge, but he kept it a secret and told Logan that there was no trace of you."
Her heart hardened and she felt lightheaded, she was probably green because she felt like she was about to throw up all the emotions building up. She could neither breathe, nor see clearly as she rummaged through her bag, hoping to find at least one bottle of pills. "My meds," she breathed heavily.
She felt Kyle disappear from her side as his steps faded urgently, and then he was kneeling in front of her in seconds. "Come on, have this!" He placed pills in her shaky palm and gave her a bottle of water.
It was as if her time had finally arrived, she was filled with anger, and amongst other things, despair. She could not even protest when Kyle carried her upstairs, thankfully, there were no journalists.
MJ drifted off to sleep as soon as Kyle put her on his bed, and by the time she woke up, it felt like a truck of bricks had offloaded on her head.
"Finally, you are awake!" Kyle Davids said, throwing his phone on the couch. "I was starting to get worried, I was even about to call Logan." He stood there with his hands on his waist, and they just stared at each other.
"I'm laying here, wondering why I'm putting everything at stake to keep him alive," she said quietly, her mind travelling to Jorge.
She had never admitted it to anyone, but the reason she never visited him was because a part of her hated him, a part of her wanted him dead, but there was also a huge part of her that would do anything for him.
"I made you some soup."
"I'm not sick, Kyle."
"But you obviously need something to boost your energy levels, you are shaking. Did you even eat anything since this morning? Because from where I'm standing, you woke up and dived straight into your thoughts."
MJ sat up against the headboard as Kyle disappeared into the kitchen, returning with a wooden tray carrying a bowl of vegetable soup, an apple, and a bottle of water. She only had a few spoons, and then drank up her water.
"Kyle, do you think things would have been different if I stayed?"
"Some things would have been different, but maybe the situation would have gotten even worse for you. What if He abused you over and over again? Men like him think once they get away with it once, they can do it again. You did what you had to do to save yourself, had you stayed, you would have hated Logan and Jorge to some extent, and you would have done something crazy."
"So, you are saying that if you had to do what you did for me again, you wouldn't hesitate?"
Kyle placed the tray on the side and sat on the bed with her. "I don't regret helping you escape, I just regret not following up to find out how you were doing. Just that things spiralled out of control really fast."
"Why did he lie? Why does he do it?"
"I wish I could tell you something different, but Jorge is not the person you think he is. He has always been a liar, you may think that Logan is in control most of the time, but he is not, Jorge is. He can be so manipulative, he knows exactly where to press when it comes to Logan. I'm the only person who has ever seen him for what he is, that's why he worked so hard to split up the group, making sure that Logan hates me."
It was hard to believe what Kyle was saying, but at the same time, it was difficult for her to believe otherwise. She would have liked to believe that her brother was a good person, but she spent her entire life watching him prove her wrong.
"I didn't mourn her," she confessed, tears clogged in her throat. "I don't remember the contractions or the pain, I just remember the silence that followed." She could hear the silence ringing in her head as pictures of that day flashed in her mind. "She never cried, and I never saw what she looked like. I thought it was better if I didn't know her. Kyle, I don't even know where she is buried."
"Does Logan know?"
MJ shook her head. "He can never find out, it will break him, Kyle."
"But it was not your fault."
"Neither of us are at fault. So, why suffer over it."
"MJ, you had a child together."
"And she died, she died! Don't you get that?" She yelled, climbing off the bed. "What good will talking about it do? I just found out that he almost had a baby with Lola too, and she miscarried the very night before I found out I was pregnant. And now with the whole Carmen-Baby drama."
"Wait... what Carmen-Baby drama?" Kyle asked.
Her eyes widened as she realised that she was revealing too much. He already knew most of the things, but the last thing she needed was another good friend turning their back on her.
She opened her mouth to speak, but was cut short by a sharp hooter.
Kyle rushed to the balcony and cursed. "Dammit, it's Logan!"
