"Bye, mom! Bye, dad!"
Lola watched as Dawn and Denise ran out the front door to their transport.
"Slow down!" David yelled after them as he carried their backpacks to them.
She heard the car driving away, and then David returned a few seconds later.
Shannon had left as soon as Montana left, and her aunt also stepped out, probably going to check on her daughter at the hospital.
Her mother-in-law was busy sewing socks for baby Lila, she had been in a good mood since Montana arrived.
“I still cannot believe Montana was here, who could have thought that she was capable of having children?”
Lola scoffed. “We all know she is crazy, for all we know she forced that boy off the streets and paid him to pretend to be a child.”
“She is not lying that is her son."
Lola felt like someone splashed cold water over her body when those words came out of her husband's mouth.
He looked guilty.
"Of course, she is not lying!" Lillian chorused.
She knew that Montana's visit was not a coincidence, Montana never did anything without a reason, she came here to flaunt his son in Lola's face. She would never risk herself if she knew that Chad was not David's son.
"David, do you know who the father of the child is?" Lillian asked.
"What?" Lola laughed. "Surely you don't think that boy is David's son."
Lillian raised a questioning eyebrow at her. "How can you be sure?" She challenged. "Let's not forget you wormed your way between Montana and David years ago. Who knows what baggage she left with when you drove her out?"
She hated that Lillian was right, she took David away from Montana and nearly paid with her life for her actions.
Montana was a psycho, she did not deserve to be out here.
If Chad was really David's child, Montana would fight tooth and nail to worm her way into their lives. Their children would be endangered.
"Montana says we should do a DNA test," David said.
Lola looked at him, waiting for him to say something else, maybe even go against the idea. "Wait, you are even thinking about it?" She asked. "Please tell me you are not considering this." They both remained quiet, and Lola threw her hands in the air. "What is wrong with you guys? We all know that Montana is a liar!"
Lillian snorted, her eyes on her crocheted socks. "David, I have no doubt that he is your son, I'm just worried about what this means." She threw Lola an accusing glare before adding, "We all know Montana was your first love. Chad is your first born. Don't get me wrong, I like Montana, you know that. But it is no secret that she is mental. Making her a part of our lives is inviting danger. Montana is going to try to get you back." Lola and David shared a worried glance. "And afterwards? She is going to try to get Lola and the kids out of the way."
For the first time in years, Lola was glad that Lillian could see what the problem was, and that she was aware of who Montana really was.
David sighed tiredly and ran his hands over his head. "I know that, Ma. But he is my son, and I can't ignore that." Lola felt her heart still when he said that, he was sure, he had already made up his mind about it. Could he have known about him all along and decided to keep him a secret? "What worries me the most is that if I try to take him away from Montana, she's going to fight back. Montana is dangerous and there is no telling what she could be capable of if provoked."
She could not remember the last time she saw her husband this stressed, and what made things worse was that they were right. Even if they tried to get Montana out of the way, she would fight tooth and nail to keep her son. She was volatile and unpredictable.
"Wasn't she admitted in the mental hospital?" Lillian asked.
"She was, but she escaped," David said.
As long as Montana was still in the picture, she would be their topic at breakfast, lunch, and supper, even in bed.
She showed up uninvited today, who knew what she would do tomorrow? It always starts with acknowledgement, then recognition, then the next thing she will want her son to be the sole heir of all David's belongings.
And if they tried to fight her off, she would most likely kill David so that she was she only surviving parent of the boy.
The only way to get Montana out of the way was killing her, because ifshe was sent back to the psychiatric hospital, she would escape and terrorize them.
"So, what do we do now?" She asked David, hoping that he had a better solution.
"I have to meet her and find out what she wants," he said.
Lola threw him a look. Was he being serious now? What was there to find out? Montana was planning to use her son in order to get back into his life.
Lola would rather die than sit around and watch her children's inheritance go to waste, if they could not get Montana out of the way, maybe the best solution was to get rid of the boy since he was the heart of everything.
David had better enjoy the few minutes he was going to spend with Montana and that boy, because it would be the last of it.
Chad had to go, and she was going to see to it that she removed him before he even dared to find a place in this family.
