He should have known that trouble was brewing the moment his sister volunteered to host the dinner she had been trying to avoid for days now.
When Danielle asked her mother to host a family dinner last week, Brianna came up with every excuse in the book in order to miss the dinner or make sure that it never happened. She was trying her best to avoid him after his attack, but he wanted to show her that he was alive and that she would not get rid of him that easily.
Unfortunately, to his sister's relief and his wife's disappointment, the dinner had to happen without him since he was held up in Ireland, his trips were starting to become regular.
It was no surprise when Danielle had a drinking feast due to his absence, but his sister's cunning ways were uncalled for. Danielle did not complain when he dropped her off at the apartment and then left, he drove to the hotel Sienna had sent him and went straight to her room.
He never got to have a proper look at her earlier tonight, but having her so close to him made him lose focus, he wanted to speak to her alone, but if he even dared to say something to her, she would have thrown the entire evening into a garbage can.
Javier knew she probably hated him, he would feel the same if he was in her shoes, thirteen years was a long time to be out of someone's life.
Sienna was his first love, probably the only woman he has ever loved, he wanted to spend his entire life with her and have a family with her, but as usual, there came a time where he had to make sacrifices and choose between his family and business. His family name was a curse, the moment people found out that the heir of one of the greatest kingpins to ever walk the soil of Mexico was alive, there was a price on his head, and he had to flee in order to protect his family.
He did not want that life for their kids, but Sienna refused to see it that way, she would not let him be part of his children's lives from a distance, he did not even know what they looked like.
He knocked on the door and waited for what felt like eternity before she opened the door and let him. "f**k!" He muttered as he watched walk away from him. She looked so damn sexy, it was as if life was mocking him. Sienna was getting more and more beautiful with age, and the best part was that she looked younger than her age, one would think she was still in her twenties. It was impossible to be mad at her when her body was calling him.
"You can stop staring now, Javier." He looked up and found her standing with her arms folded, an impassive look on her face. No woman could ever have his heart race even by the sound of her voice.
"Sienna -"
She scoffed. "Oh! At least you still remember my name. How long has it been again? Thirteen bloody years, and you have the nerve to stand there and say my name as if the worst thing you've ever done was to leave my message unread last night!" She yelled.
Javier closed his eyes and sighed. "How are the kids?" He asked.
"The kids? What kids are you talking about?" She mocked, bitterness laced in her voice. "They no longer use prams or wear diapers, Javier, they are grownup!"
He swallowed and nodded slowly. So, this is how she wanted things to be. "Why did you call me here if you did not call me to discuss the children?"
She gave him an incredulous stare. "Do you even have to ask? What kind of game do you and your sister think you are playing?"
Javier sighed. "My sister and I had a heated argument a few weeks ago. Do you remember Ms Sandoval?"
She smirked. "Your babysitter?"
He glared at her, but continued anyway. "I ran into her at Alastair Cooper's memorial service, and I found out that she was married to the man who murdered my family." Her face softened and she sat next to him and held his hand. "When I saw her, I was glad to see that she was alive."
"So, you didn't know she was married to him?" He shook his head. "And let me guess, you solved things the only way you know how, you tried to kill her."
Javier grimaced. To her, he was predictable, he hated how well she knew him and how she knew how he was going to respond to situations. "I was angry," he said, looking into her eyes, hoping that she would understand.
She pulled her hands away and shifted, sitting perpendicular to him. "And that's supposed to justify everything?" She asked angrily. "This is exactly why I don't want you in my life and my children's lives, Javier. Everything is a game to you, and now you are dragging me back into it!"
"I never asked you to come here!" He snapped.
He hated her, he hated how easily she turned against him every time he needed her. She was the only thing in this world that reminded him that he still had a heart, not because of the way he felt about her or how he loved her, but because she knew how to twist and break it, she knew how to make him bleed without using a knife or a gun.
"I came here for a possible business opportunity, only to find out that I'm just a pawn in whatever twisted game you and Brianna are playing," she yelled back. "Não entendi, o que você está fazendo para interferir na vida dela, quando sabe muito bem que ela não o quer na vida dela? (I don't get it, what are you doing interfering with her life when you know fully well that she does not want you in her life?)"
Javier got up and walked over to the side table and poured himself a drink, gulping it in one go. "She's my sister."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Was it even a coincidence that you ended up marrying in the same family as her?" He went tense, only fuelling her suspicions. "Now I get it, that woman is not your type."
He snorted. "And what exactly is my type?" He challenged.
"You love a strong woman, someone who is independent and can stand on her own two feet, not some floozy who needs alcohol to keep her going. That woman could barely keep her hands off the bottle at the dinner, she looked at it as if it was her first love."
He swallowed and looked away from her. "Brianna has no idea what kind of a family she's married to, those people are dangerous."
"Why won't you just tell her the truth?"
Javier scoffed, Brianna never listened to anything he had to say. "For what? So that when things blow up she can shift the blame on me and say I ruined her life?"
"So, you'd rather ruin mine?"
He snickered, he was really getting tired of this back and forth, if Brianna wanted to get to him, she hit the nail on the head this time. "Listen, I don't care how you got here, but you are going to get on the first flight out of here tomorrow," he said sternly.
She scoffed and crossed her arms. "Or what?"
"Sienna, don't push me. You won't like what I'm going to do to you."
"What are you going to do, kill me?"
He froze. "If I have to."
She laughed bitterly. "Dear Javier, what do you think is gonna happen when I die? Do you think you are going to get access to my kids by getting me out of the way?" She stood up and approached him, coming to stop right in front of him, a stern look on her face. "Honey, come heaven or hell, if I die, I'm taking my children with me." She said in a chilly voice, sending shivers down his spine.
Javier's eyes widened in horror, she was not joking. He gulped and shook his head. "Sienna–" he said in a pleading voice, but she walked away from him and headed for the door, and then she opened it widely and stood on the side. He sighed and picked up his jacket, and walked over to her, she could not even look him in the eye. "Please don't do anything irresponsible."
Her eyes shot up. "The only irresponsible thing I would ever do is to leave my kids in your hands. Now, if you don't mind, I've had a long day." She shut the door in his face, and he felt like something was clawing away at his heart.
